The Plantation Art Guild is offering a workshop with Lois Perdue, “Create BIG Art from Small Abstracts” on Friday, October 20th. This class will be an adventure to learn how to easily create abstract paintings beginning with a mini format! Participants will be provided with sources of inspiration to “kick start” their learning process and have an opportunity to create at least ½ dozen mini abstract paintings.

But this class isn’t just about abstract paintings:

*It is about learning new texturing techniques
*It is about building layers of glazes and paints to create dimension
*And it is about how to use your own failed paintings as collage to make your paintings sizzle!

Lois discovered that the technique of painting “smaller formats” has given her greater control over her painting.  This has led to her receiving awards and recognition in national, state and local competitions with her larger format works.  Although Lois paints on watercolor paper, canvas and wood panel, she prefers the magic of a plastic paper called Yupo.  It has a slick surface unlike watercolor paper and when it meets water media, colors virtually explode. She begins all her under first layers with watercolor paints, powdered watercolor pigments, watercolor inks, glazes and markings to establish a foundation and then proceeds to acrylic paints and acrylic inks, charcoal and pen for mark making, oil pastels and, of course, collage! Each of her finished paintings may have 10, 15 or more layers, all each having been “set” with varnish to hold the colors. Lois has lived in South Florida her entire life and teaches abstract workshops upon request throughout the area.  She is very active in the art community and is a member of Plantation, Weston, Broward and Coral Springs Art Guilds, Florida Watercolor Society, International Society of Experimental Artists, XII Voices, an informal group of 12 professional water media artists who meet monthly to exchange current art information and offer critiques and evaluations from their peers. She is also first vice president and program chair of the Fort Lauderdale Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, an organization comprised of artists,
writers and composers!

The Plantation Art Guild is a small, but very active arts organization founded in 1973 and incorporated in 1986 as a non-profit. PAG, which currently has 102 members, offers workshops, four juried shows with cash awards and monthly meetings. A guest artist demonstrates different techniques at the monthly meetings which are held throughout the season that runs from September to May. PAG also holds regularly scheduled paint-ins.

Since its beginning, Plantation Art Guild has endeavored to award one or more scholarships annually to students who are residents of Plantation or attend a Plantation high school and plan to continue their education in Fine Arts.

 

PAG’s goal is to promote and support artistic and creative endeavors in an exceptionally congenial environment. Visitors are welcome to come to a meeting or a paint-in. Since beginning her career as a full time artist in 1998, Soon has had many exhibitions and won extensive numbers of awards. With her vibrant watercolor technique she has become much sought after as a teacher and author and has published a number of instructional books and dvd’s. Her paintings are in the permanent collection of several museums, including the National Watercolor Museum, as well as in many private collections.

Florida artists and GCWS Members may enter.

Watermedia may include any combination of  watercolor, tempera, gouache, opaque watercolor, acrylic, casein, ink, charcoal, gesso, watercolor crayons, pencils and pens including metallic.

One must exclude water-soluble oils as well as any other similar substance.

Acceptable surfaces for watercolor are substrates created for watermedia. For example: paper, clay coated surfaces (Clayboard, Aquaboard, Ampersand), synthetic surfaces, (Yupo, Tiger Rag), illustration board and flat watercolor canvas.

Watercolor Collage is acceptable, but newspaper, magazine or non-watercolor material cutouts will not be accepted.

Works must be original i.e., not done under class instruction, critiqued and changed, not a copy of another artist’s work.

Work must be done by a single artist not a collaborative work.

Work must have been completed within the last three years; any submitted work must not have been previously displayed in a GCWS judged show.

Tasteful nudes will be accepted into this show.

 

 

Entry and fees:

Artists may enter one or two paintings. A non-refundable fee of $30 for GCWS members, $35 for non-members, must accompany the entry form. No changes can be made after entry is received. No refunds will be made.

 

 

Sizing and framing requirements:

All types of frames and mats are acceptable except those that are ornate or heavy.

Saw tooth hangers are not permitted.

Maximum size frame is less than 48”in any direction.

Work must be sturdily framed under Plexiglas, wired and ready for hanging.

Please cross brace large pieces. (work will be rejected if it does not comply and fees will NOT be refunded.)

All watercolorists are eligible to enter their paintings for the Gold Coast Watercolor Society’s upcoming exhibit, “Apparently Watercolor”.  The juried exhibit will take place February 23rd through March 13th.  A wide variety of watermedia is encouraged, as the entries will be juried by Jeannie McGuire, AWS.  Her painting, “Kenneth” was chosen as the American Watercolor Society’s 144th Gold Medal of Honor selection.  The exhibit will take place at Art Serve in Fort Lauderdale.  The Rickie Report shares the details and application as well as some views of previous exhibitors.  Deadline for this exhibit is February 14th!  The public is welcome to the Reception and Awards Ceremony on February 26th.

A Pittsburgh-based artist, Jeannie strives to invoke individual interpretation through her artwork, which impressively utilizes a free application of paint and stylistic forms of expression.  Stories and feelings are communicated in such works as “Kenneth,” the American Watercolor Society’s 144th Gold Medal of Honor selection.  McGuire uses her own photography, acquired snapshots and life drawings to spark her creativity.

In addition to their monthly meeting, WAS is sending out its Annual Scholarship forms to all the Palm Beach County public high schools. The applications are due April 12, and WAS will be giving $500 – $1,000 scholarships.  The Rickie Report had an opportunity to meet one of 2011 scholarship winners, Flannery Winchester. You’ve probably seen Flannery’s artwork on the walls of Palm Beach International Airport!

Wellington Art Society Offers Art Scholarships

 

The Wellington Art Society is currently accepting applications for its one-time $500 to $1,000 college art scholarships for graduating seniors who live in and attend high school in Palm Beach County.

 

• The scholarship is available to students planning a college major in visual arts at either a 2 or 4-year institution. Applications may be obtained from their school art teachers or from the Wellington Art Society by contacting Suzanne Redmond at sredmond75@comcast.net

 

• Requirements for the scholarship are as follows: Students must reside in and attend high school in Palm Beach County. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in visual arts and an overall GPA of 2.0. Three art classes in high school must have been completed. An artist’s statement and career goal must be submitted along with 7-10 photographs for viewing, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and the transcript of the student.

 

• The application package for the scholarship is due April 12, 2013 and should be sent to the Wellington Art Society, P.O. Box 212943, Royal Palm Beach, FL  33421-2943.

 

The Wellington Art Society Scholarship, established in 2001, has provided 25 talented young artists with funds for their art-related expenses such as art/photographic supplies and books or tuition for visual art classes. Proceeds from the Art Society’s annual art exhibitions and sales, such as ArtFest on the Green and Whole Foods Market Art Shows, support the scholarship fund and its other programs.

 

Flannery is now a member of WAS and is currently enrolled in the Maryland Institute College of Art. You may have seen her artwork around town. She has exhibited at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery in Lake Worth; ArtsGarage in Delray Beach; and she has artwork through February 27 at the Palm Beach International Airport and through May 1 at the Wellington City Hall. It is with great pleasure that the Wellington Art Society awards scholarships to such deserving individuals, and we are thrilled to see Flannery’s artwork around the county.

 

 

 

Beginning March 1 through May 31st, WAS member, Ursula Fernandez will have her work exhibited at Whole Foods in Wellington.  There will be a special Artists Reception on Friday, April 26 from 6:30 – 8:00. People are asked to RSVP to Whole Foods so they can get a headcount: 561-904-4000.  More details will follow!
