Vicki is sharing this new space with two other artists; Brenda Gordon and Magnus Sebastian (Gordon & Magnus Gallery).

VICKI SIEGEL:

Vicki Siegel’s work combines painting and photography together. She creates images that unite her fascination with the world around her with the physicality of paint. Blending the two art forms is a process that results in images that are both real and imaginary. The photographers gaze allows her to observe and archive reality, while the paint flows from her subconscious to her brush in marks that are uniquely her own.  Siegel says, “In my work I ask the viewer to engage by comparing what is photographic and what is paint, but also what is personal and what is universal”. In the narrative it is her hope that they see her vision of how strange and wonderful life is, and how beautiful nature is and the necessity of preserving it.

Real Mail Fridays, Book Arts 101 Among Offerings From Jaffe Center for Book Arts

Remember receiving real letters in the mail?  Maybe you wrote to a pen pal overseas, or a thank you note for a gift.  The Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University’s Wimberly Library in Boca Raton, Florida  is the place to capture or recapture this art!  “Real Mail Fridays” takes place the first Friday of every month.  The Rickie Report shares the details about this and Book Arts 101.

We’re already sick of summer. So are lots of other people, apparently, because folks are already registering for our October introductory immersion (and no wonder, it’s always our most popular… which is why we offer it twice).

BOOK ARTS 101: Hist Whist
Instructor John Cutrone

Your choice of two sessions:
Saturday October 25, 2014 or Sunday October 26, 2014
1 to 4:30 PM
Tuition schedule: Self-determined (your tuition is a gift to the JCBA Education Fund).

This Book Arts 101 workshop begins with the All Hallow’s Eve magic of “Hist Whist” by poet e.e. cummings. We tune into that Halloween spirit by turning our eye toward the spookier items in the Jaffe Collection followed by a visit to our haunted print shop as we work our spell to transmogrify you into a book artist, at least for an afternoon. Is anything what it seems? Who knows.

We’ll begin with a screening of a 20-minute video about JCBA and the amazing collection of artists’ books that is at its core. We’ll follow this with an in-depth viewing of some of the artists’ books in the collection––books that will entertain, inspire, and astound. We’ll honor the season and Halloween by finding some particularly spooky and autumnal books from the collection, and you can expect a local ghost story or two, as well, from the instructor’s cache of Convivio Dispatches from Lake Worth.
After a necessary break for coffee and cookies, we’ll move on to the JCBA Letterpress Studio, where each participant will print a sheet of paper from type set by hand out of JCBA’s collection of historic wood type. These sheets will be the covers for the books we’ll make, a brief history of the book arts that we’ll bind by hand in the Single Signature Pamphlet stitch, a simple bookbinding technique that you can use again and again in your own book projects. You’ll go home with a book you made yourself––one that you can read as sleep calls later that night, as you reflect on the new outlook on books (and maybe even life) that you’ve found earlier that evening at JCBA. “For there is great joy in knowing how to do things.” All levels.

BOOK ARTS 101: Still Summer
Instructor John Cutrone
Saturday September 13, 2014
1 to 4:30 PM
Tuition schedule: Self-determined (your tuition is a gift to the JCBA Education Fund).

This Book Arts 101 workshop is full but we are ready to start a waiting list in case we get cancelations. The theme of this one is “Still Summer” because here in Florida, summer takes all its sweet time leaving, and in these parts, September is no different from July or August. This workshop is designed to turn you into a book artist for a day, while we celebrate that summerness and even conjure some thoughts to show summer the door.
