Artisans On The Ave presents, “Created By The Hands Of Man”, a group exhibit celebrating the artistry of its male artists, who, with determination, share the vision of their talented hands. The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks of creations by Robert Ben Kline, Howard Fleischer, Carl Schneider, Robert Hunter, Herbert Weintraub and EJ Morales. Hand carved Pens and Corkscrew by Howard Fleischer
These male artists create with the determined focus of their vision and the strength of their talented hands. A potter uses a gentle touch to form his clay and molds it into a perfectly formed vase or bowl. The piece is finished after he decides on a glazing color from a vast spectrum of choices and then goes in the kiln to be fired.

The painter is inspired by his surroundings and dreams that dance in his head in an abstract manner. He then gently or boldly holds his brush and applies the strokes to his choice of canvas, paper or other mediums. The photographer holds the camera with his hands and sees the images through his eyes and then transfers them onto a selected background. The poet and writer grips the pen as the words flow to the paper, grabbing the reader’s attention and taking them to a distant place as their eyes read his thoughts. The pen was made by the artist’s creative hands.

The artist who makes one of a kind wearable art such as jewelry or fiber pieces uses his hands with precision to make his art, sometimes applying jewels and gems. The powerful touch of the artist can turn steel into sculpture with the torch and fire used to sculpt raw beams into works of art. His strong hands work as he welds together heavy pieces that can also transform found objects into functional art, such as mirrors and lamps.

The woodworker carves works of beauty from the bare pieces of a tree limbs or trunk that was be found in the woods or given to him by friends. His hands touch the sometimes exotic patterns and grains and he foresees the object it will become. His hands grip the tools to make intricate designs. The hands of the wood-turner work combine with the wood on a lathe and the raw wood transforms into an object of beauty. The scars and lines on the artist’s hands reveal the true passion and struggles which allow each of us to enjoy and be thankful for his artistry.

Howard Fleischer is passionate about his art which involves working with beautiful pieces of wood. Each piece has one of a kind grains that are visible on its surfaces. He enjoys making one of a kind exotic crafting pens, letter openers, wine stoppers and corkscrews. Each one is original and handmade. These functional pieces are sure to make great gifts to that special someone or yourself!

“Peacock” Wood turned Vessel by Carl Schneider
Teacher of wood turning and award winning artist, Carl Schneider began woodturning in 1997. Carl is gratified by creating many types of pieces, enhancing the natural character of wood and experimenting with texturing, carving and coloring. He loves collaborating with Mother Nature to create useful and beautiful objects from wood. As someone said these objects combine the “art of nature and the nature of the artist”. Carl shares, “After trees are cut down for various reasons I extend their lives by creating useful and beautiful objects that people will enjoy forever”.

As a young boy, Robert started woodworking. It was under his father’s guidance this that he learned the disciplines of this fine craft… Not to rush the work and work with the wood. Let the wood tell you what you have to do,” Robert of Blu Paw Woodworking, tells us. “I still use the lessons I learned long ago and today rely heavily on grains and colors in my work. Whether it be a cutting board or a coffee table, these grains and colors are my focus. I am fascinated with what causes the different patterns to occur in the woods; from wind or rain; too much or too little sun or tiny insects that boar the holes that cause the streaks in Ambrosia Maple. With the exotic woods I work with, each piece is always one of a kind. I will always be surprised by what I find under the bark of a tree and how it will lend itself to the beauty of that creation”.
HERBERT WEINTRAUB

Herbert Weintraub has built a reputation for being one of the top-rated artists in his field. His work represents New York City as it was in the middle part of the 20th century, as well as rural landscapes and seascapes of some of our country’s most beautiful surroundings. Through his use of oil and acrylics, Herbert prides himself in creating collectible original paintings. Each work draws from a rich history of his personal experiences and tours throughout the United States. Herbert Weintraub studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He holds numerous art awards. His work adorns the walls of many large well known corporate office buildings throughout the nation. His work is collected by many which include sports journalists, Hollywood actors and actresses, rock stars and politicians, among others.

To EJ Morales, the camera is a unique window to the world he sees; a filter, if you will…. Its magic enables him to share his vision with others. Often literal, his photography carries an abstract flavor seeking to convey emotional meaning. EJ has been taking photographs from a very early age. His work has evolved and ranges from merely documenting the literal to more sublime pursuits. He covers subjects from wildlife both above and below the water as well as land/cityscapes, all the while endeavoring to imprint the images with his own unique artistic flavor.

Exotic Dog Sculpture by Robert ben Kline
Robert has worked in clay for nearly 20 years. His work is comical, humorous, and perhaps a tad absurd. An exotic dancing dog in a “gentleman’s club” for dogs, no less! A Harley-Davidson unicycle! A giant apple with an equally giant worm, having a rather human face! He mixes a variety of techniques, from wheel thrown to hand building to sculpture. He is forever exploring new subject matter, so that his first pieces in a subject may be straight forward… and as it evolves, his artistic voice comes through. Something will look off kilter; that strange pose… The person is part of a bicycle…Something is different… Something seems slightly odd… After all, this is art, not a mere replication of life!
