About the National League of American Pen Women:

Since its founding in 1897 by Marian Longfellow O’Donoghue, Henry Longfellow’s niece, the League seeks to create progression and advancement in visual arts, literary work, and musical composition. As the oldest and largest women’s arts organization, members share their creativity in a number of ways, including workshops, exhibitions, discussion groups, performances, demonstrations and lectures, fostering networking and friendships among members, while maintaining a high, broad standard of work, effort and strength that comes from the union. Each year the Fort Lauderdale Branch awards three $1,000 scholarships to a high school senior woman who has been accepted and enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college, university or technical school.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF AMERICAN PEN WOMEN

The need for an organization to include women of the press at the turn of the 19th century impelled newspaper woman Marian Longfellow O’Donoghue (Henry Longfellow’s niece) to establish such a group.

She, along with 17 charter members, filed its first application for incorporation with a membership of 50 professionals including women writers, composers and artists. The League has been promoting and conducting literary, educational and charitable activities in the fields of Art, Letters and Music for the past 118 years throughout the United States.

The Fort Lauderdale Branch, comprise of members from the tri-county area, meets monthly for luncheons in the Broward County area from October to April each year. Artists, musicians, writers and historians present a variety of programs.

An annual art competition open to all tri-county women artists as well as additional exhibits for Arts and Letters members are presented throughout the year. Several creative programs each year attract audiences interested in jewelry making and paper making to abstract and batik art.

In April, the season ends with the Annual Achievement Awards program and luncheon at which time scholarship financial awards are presented to several area high school senior women who have met the Pen Women criteria and will go on to college to study in the areas of Arts, Music and/or Writing.
