Cheryl Phan Shares Her “Paint For Children” Initiative, Giving Children Artwork To Smile About

The Rickie Report feels that Thanksgiving Day is a most appropriate time to share Cheryl Phan’s “Paint For Children” initiative.  This new not-for-profit’s mission is to brighten a child’s world with art. Each child chosen for this project is facing challenges, many life threatening.  Painting a favorite character or theme in their room gives them a sense of pride and special comfort. We share the details here and urge our readers to share – their artistic talents, their time to help this organization, and donations.

We are always looking for talented people to help with our projects. We also welcome anyone that would like to help with set up, clean up, and a handyman that can help with other odds and ends that are sometimes needed.
Volunteers can email me at support@paintforchildren.org

TRR: Tell us about your own artwork.

CP:
I love painting and creating things; walls, ceilings furniture; you name it I’ll paint it. I started my own faux finishing and decorative painting business 14 years ago called Artzy Fartzy Creations. It has since expanded into repurposing furniture and teaching classes on refinishing out-dated furniture pieces. I also write a monthly blog “Easy Peasy DIY Projects”. People can sign up for on my website: http://artzyfartzycreations.com

TRR: As there anything else you want to share with our readers?

CP:

We are always looking for volunteers with or without art experience. The more volunteers we have the more children we can bless. Palm Beach County is our first Chapter. As we grow we will open additional Chapters across the US. At this time, we are scheduled to do a room makeover once a quarter, that’s four per year per chapter. We would love it if we could do one per month, but we can’t do that without volunteers and donations. If you are interested in helping please contact us at support@paintforchildren.org

ABOUT PLEIN AIR

En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. The mid-19th century saw working in natural light become particularly important to the impressionists, which only increased with the introduction of paint in tubes, giving additional portability to the artists.

Announcing ART SYNERGY ARTWEEK2015! Art Synergy Announces New Art Districts and Calls to Artists!

After an amazingly successful inaugural year, Art Synergy is back bigger and better with “ArtWeek 2015”.  Formed in early 2013 in response to the needs of local artists in Palm Beach County, Art Synergy is a countywide movement to unify and promote the diverse culture of our vibrant arts community. Developed from discussions during a think tank with local artists, Rolando Chang Barrero, Craig McInnis and Freddy Hennevelt took the lead and formed an organization to promote art events throughout the county that would coincide with Art Palm Beach.  Through the generosity and support of Lee Ann Lester, the Director of IFAE and Art Palm Beach, Art Synergy will once again have a booth at the ArtPalm Beach 2015 exhibition, January 22 through January 25, 2105. This is an extraordinary opportunity for artists to be in this prestigious show by entering a call to artists. It will be a juried exhibition of exceptional work created and made by professional artists of Palm Beach County. This beautiful showcase is held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, West Palm Beach, FL and is dedicated to providing a rich visual arts experience for collectors and art enthusiasts from Europe, Asia, and North and South America.  The deadline to apply is December 15th.  The Rickie Report is proud to be part of this event!

The call for artists is open to all residents of Palm Beach County. The deadline to apply is December 15, 2014. Applications are available at Juried Art Services http://www.juriedartservices.com

Developed from discussions during a think tank in 2013 with local artists, Rolando Chang Barrero, Craig McInnis and Freddy Hennevelt took the lead and formed an organization to promote art events throughout the county that would coincide with Art Palm Beach. The thought was that Palm Beach County arts could benefit from the popular art event much like Miami benefitted from Art Basel. Soon it was christened ART SYNERGY and took off running with the support of the many local artists in the county.

The first year, five art districts participated in various ways, with each district having events on one particular day during the week long Art Palm Beach event. The repose was phenomenal and the momentum in developing the volunteer non=profit organization was ongoing throughout the year with additional countywide meetings with artists, the community and the media.

Opening night of Art Synergy 2014

Opening night of Art Synergy 2014

The organization grew and this year has expanded to seven districts. Once again there will be specific days in for each districts and the participating galleries and artists to be spotlighted. The districts are comprised of artists’ studios, galleries and supporting businesses and restaurants that have come together to promote local art. The seven districts are West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, North County, Northwood, Antiques Row (including Worth Avenue), Boynton Beach and Delray Beach (Artist’s Alley).

Art Synergy, a non-profit organization, and all of the participating districts are volunteer based and rely on the artists and volunteers to run and manage all of the events. They also depend on sponsorship from local businesses and patrons in order to promote and market the events. Art Synergy is always looking for sponsors and there are many sponsorship opportunities.

Place of Hope is a unique faith-based, state-licensed child welfare organization providing family-style foster care; family outreach and intervention; maternity care; safety for victims of domestic minor sex trafficking; transitional housing and support services; adoption and foster care recruitment and support; and hope and healing opportunities for children and families who have been traumatized by abuse and neglect throughout our region.

The Rickie Report spoke with Sarah Anne Livoti about Place of Hope.  It is hard to imagine this large and extensive organization grew out of the desire of Christ Fellowship Church to reach out and help just one child.  While their program is faith-based, one does not need to be a believer to get involved.

We noticed that at “Seven Stars”, craft projects are a regular part of the routine.  Sarah was excited at the idea of local artists volunteering a few hours of their time to feature a craft or art project for a group of children.  She stressed that this does not have to be a long-term commitment  (though Place of Hope welcomes those as well).

"Name That Tune"

Since the children at Place of Hope range in 5 to 18 years of age, their needs vary.  Experiencing art with a community-cased artist would give them a new, inspiring experience. In addition, volunteers can speak about how to open a bank account, how to register to vote or share a beneficial skill that will make a difference in the lives for their future.  Sharing information about your career can ignite a spark that will take a child further into a positive life situation.

When asked about direct donations, Sarah referred to the exciting online auction being spearheaded by Evelyn Ortiz Smykla and Jonathon Ortiz-Smykla of OSGS Gallery.  Offers of art materials are always welcome and they are most welcome with someone to lead an activity.

Organizer and Founder of Art Palm Beach,  Lee Ann Lester, is collaborating with a group of Palm Beach County artists led by Rolando Chang Barrero, Craig McInnis, and Freddy Hennevelt.  They have organized art community leaders throughout Palm Beach County under the banner of Art Synergy.  This is a county-wide movement to unify and promote the diverse culture of our vibrant arts community.
Art Synergy, Art Palm Beach and the Palm Beach Cultural Council, will produce 6 inaugural satellite exhibitions throughout Palm Beach County in conjunction with the world-renown Art Palm Beach event at the Palm Beach Convention Center, January  23- 28, 2014. This coordinated five day event includes over 60 galleries, studios, non-profit art institutions and museums.  Each art district will offer gallery walks, symposiums, open studio visits, special exhibitions, fashion shows, poetry readings, architectural tours, film previews and art performances. Maps and schedules of events will be available.

The Participating Art Districts include:

  • Art Palm Beach – Art Synergy will host an information booth (January 23-26)
  • Boynton Beach – “ARTal’FRESCO ”  (January 24th  7 – 11 pm)
  • Clematis Street & West Palm Beach – “Continuum”
  • Historic Northwood Village, West Palm Beach  – “ArtX ”  (January 25th  5-11 pm)
  • Lake Worth – “ArtPOP”
  • Palm Beach – Worth Avenue
  • S. Dixie Highway Arts & Antiques District, West Palm Beach
Volunteers are needed at most of the locations.  We need the entire community to get involved in even the smallest of tasks.  “It is a significant step in telling the world that “art lives here”.  It is Palm Beach County’s milestone moment. Palm Beach County has a great legacy in supporting the arts and is home to many of Florida’s leading art and cultural institutions. Art Synergy will create a new bridge for winter residents,  Art Palm Beach visitors to explore this cultural legacy and create an annual destination to enjoy Palm Beach County Art Week events.”, Lee Ann Lester states.
