For all levels, Wednesday 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. This class will revitalize your photography practice by exploring your relationship to your subject, your camera, and yourself. Through photo exercises, assignments, and field trips, we will learn to deepen our visual awareness while clarifying our approach, so that image making becomes both more personal and meaningful. This class will provide a unique opportunity to rethink our expectations of what it means to ‘see’. We will work on simplicity and making more powerful photographs, supporting the notion that a photograph is not ‘taken’ but made. Attention will be paid to lighting, composition, depth-of-field and exposure issues, but more importantly, you will practice using this information to make more powerful and meaningful images. Bring a sense of commitment (and sense of humor) and curiosity to class, as well as a few examples of recent work to the first session.

Delray Art League Announces Next Meeting Featuring JoAnn Nava, Numerous Exhibits And Call For New Members

The Delray Art League (DAL) invites you to their next monthly meeting on November 9th. JoAnn Nava will present and demonstrate. For over 30 years, JoAnn used her painting skills in the trades of decorative painting, murals, faux finishing and restorations. The result is visible in the painting she’s been producing in her fine art. Manipulating latex house paint has challenges different from acrylic and oil. It is a visual language all its own. In this demonstration, a painting will be created from a limited color palette. Viewing artists will see the advantages of using this medium by itself or as a substrate for other mediums.  The Rickie Report shares the details about this event and upcoming exhibits.  DAL is a terrific artist networking organization.  Stop by !

Vicki Siegel’s SOLO Exhibition Engages In A Dialogue About The Nature Of Connections

Vicki Siegel’s use of multiple images, using photography and painting, will intrigue and fascinate viewers at her SOLO Exhibition at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. Siegel’s artistry is a narrative that is informed by memories, both personal and collective. She worked as an art director and creative director in Chicago, Milan, Italy and South Florida. Siegel works in her Delray Beach studio creating mixed media works that are both emotional and introspective. Siegel has exhibited extensively in South Florida and can be found in multiple private and corporate collections.  The Rickie Report shares a few images and the details about the SOLO Exhibit as well as an Artist Talk.  The public is welcome and we urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to meet this artist.

"Wired" by Vicki Siegel

“Wired” by Vicki Siegel

Vicki Siegel is part of an emerging genre of artists that are transcending the boundary between painting and photography. She is a narrative artist who explores issues of identity, connectivity and the environment. Each painting unites a particular memory or moment in time with a world that is part fantasy and part reality. To achieve this, painting, drawing and image transfers of photographs can be found in each mixed media painting, creating a dreamlike atmosphere with a surreal sense of space.

"Transformation" by Vicki Siegel

“Transformation” by Vicki Siegel

The use of multiple images and the comparison of images has always been a theme of Vicki Siegel’s paintings and photographs. “I begin each work with an idea or a social issue that I want to narrate.” Siegel said. “Then, I work with a model and/or take photographs that I incorporate into the painting. In the studio, I begin experimenting until the vision that I have in my mind becomes a physical work of art.”

"Birds Of A Feather" by Vicki Siegel

“Birds Of A Feather” by Vicki Siegel

Fascinated by paint, acrylic paint in particular, Siegel experiments with the paint itself, utilizing unusual techniques such as acrylic encaustic, poured, dripped or paint skins. “I love experimenting with paint, pushing the boundary of what it can do in both 2 and 3 dimensions.”
“South Florida’s natural landscape has also been an influence in my work,” Siegel said. “but the human form always seems to find its way into my paintings.” The current work that will be shown at her solo show at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County explores the connectivity and boundaries between individuals in our society and nature.

"Nature Unbound" by Vicki Siegel

“Nature Unbound” by Vicki Siegel

Siegel began taking figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago when she was 16 years old. She got her BFA and then went on to do graduate work in Italy. She worked in advertising as an art director and then a creative director in Chicago, Milan, Italy and South Florida. “I continued to make art while working in advertising until I finally decided to do it full time. Vicki now shows her work extensively and teaches painting at the Armory and at Delray Center for the Arts as well as holding workshops. She currently has work in “Adornment” at the Cornell Museum of Art in Delray Beach and at the Faculty Exhibit at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. Her studio is in Delray Beach, Florida.
An artist talk, “Process and Method in Contemporary Painting” connected to the Cultural Council Solo show will be held at the Cultural Council building at 601 Lake Avenue in Lake Worth on May 2, at 3 p.m. For more information, call (561) 472-3336 or go to www.palmbeachculture.com/artist-lectures to RSVP.

NAWA Celebrates 125 years with “Women of Vision” Exhibition

So often, when we speak of “visionaries”, we are mindful of those people from the not-too-distant past and usually, the present.   The Rickie Report shares an article about  visionary artists who anticipated the needs of others 125 years ago! They formed the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) to foster public awareness of, and interest in, visual art created by women in the United States.  NAWA promotes culture and education in the visual arts through exhibitions of its members’ works, educational programs, scholarships, awards and its historical archives.  While encouraging contemporary and emerging artists, NAWA honors and continues the long and important contribution of women to the history of American culture and art.  The Rickie Report hopes that emerging as well as established artists will consider membership in this prestigious group. It goes beyond networking for one’s own gain, as they secure the future for the arts here in the United States.

The National Association of Women Artists, Inc. (NAWA), the first professional women’s fine arts group in the United States, is proud to celebrate its 125th Anniversary in 2014.  Five innovative women in New York City founded the not-for-profit in 1889 to foster public awareness and interest in visual art created by women as well as to empower, support and encourage women artists. Its early exhibitions included works by such notable artists as Mary Cassatt and Suzanne Valadon, and later membership rosters included Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel, and Judy Chicago.

The Florida Chapter of NAWA was the first regional chapter in the country. It was founded in 1995 by Liana Moonie, of Palm Beach, a past president of the national organization and Madeline Weiss, who was the first president of the Florida Chapter. The Chapter takes part in regional exhibitions, seminars and other educational activities as well as sponsoring annual scholarships for talented art students. All artists wishing to join the Florida Chapter must first be juried into the Association Headquarters in New York City.
During this celebratory year the theme is “Women of Vision.”  Members must have been juried into N.A.W.A., where they were eligible to be juried into the national show, a forum for women artists from all over the United States. This multimedia show, “125 Years: Women of Vision,” which will include sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics and mixed media will take place at our own Armory Art Center, 1700 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach, December 5, 2014 – January 10, 2015. Rhoda Sherbell, a distinguished portrait sculptor, will jury entries for the exhibit, and Ashley Ford, the Sophie Davis Curatorial Fellow at the Norton Museum of Art, will jury the awards.

Vicki Siegel Exhibits Acrylic and Mixed Media Paintings at Multiple Venues

With work in multiple venues, including a SOLO show, artist Vicki Siegel has been pouring her creative energy into new work and organizing a SOLO exhibit with a range of work from the last ten years.  Her paintings include images of both collective and personal memories. The Rickie Report is pleased to share the details of her exhibits and hopes you will stop by to view some of her wonderful, dreamlike creations.

VICKI SIEGEL EXHIBITS AT MULTIPLE VENUES

Vicki Siegel’s paintings are informed by memory, both personal and collective. “Memories are imperfect representations of the past that are altered, fragmented, reconstructed and reinterpreted over time” says Siegel. “In my narrations details are found in layers often revealing something forgotten or missing from actual experiences or by the collective memories we share”.

"Gioia"

“Gioia” by Vicki Siegel (Acrylic and Image Transfer)

In her first SOLO show, “Journeys”, artist Vicki Siegel takes the viewer on an artistic journey from the outside world to a world that exists in the imagination. The exhibition takes place at the Weisman Delray Community Center, January 21, 2014- March 2, 2014. The Center is located at 7091 W. Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach. Hours are Monday – Thurs. 9 am – 5 pm, Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. A reception with a brief artist talk will be held Sunday, February 16th from 2-4 pm. Free and open to the public.
