Naomi Cordero, a contemporary portrait sculptor and painter for over thirty years, was born and raised in Fairfield, CT. Though mostly self-taught, this innovative artist and Palm Beach Gardens resident honed her skills at the Armory Art Center under the guidance of master portrait sculptors, Muriel Kaplan and Bert Deiner, former President of the Art Students League in New York City, who called her “naturally gifted”. Naomi also refined her painting skills at the Academy of Fine Art & Studio in North Palm Beach.

Within her first few years as a professional artist, Naomi’s work has been shown at various art galleries in Florida including The Frankel Gallery, The Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, FL and The Phillips Fine Art Gallery in Sanibel Island, FL. Currently, Naomi is a resident artist at Art on Park in Lake Park, FL.

Naomi’s style is not a conscious choice. It just comes to her naturally. She expresses what she feels, resulting in an intuitive technique without any preconceived notion of what will appear. What comes out of this free-form process are paintings featuring elongated faces with large, expressive eyes and a strong contrast between light and dark values.

Oil and mixed media are her mediums of choice. After many layers of loose and expressive brushstrokes of oil colors that are swished and dabbed by paint brushes and palette knives, the characters of her portraits reveal themselves through their facial expressions and emotive eyes. By way of surrealism and realism, these larger than life faces form an emotional connection with the everyday art lover allowing that person to see the true beauty that lies within the larger image.

Sarah LaPierre Bio send

Sarah tells The Rickie Report, “Art making is a process and a style of living that I treasure like a member of my own family. It has always had a strong presence in my life and has become ingrained in who I am as a person. I create art because the act itself brings me happiness and fulfillment. Sharing that happiness with others through my painting is likewise an incentive to create.”

Sarah LaPierre's "Jupiter Light"

Sarah LaPierre’s “Jupiter Light”

I give unique qualities to my art by using a palette knife and heavy full-bodied acrylic paints, which create the thick texture and the vibrant uplifting colors that are characteristics of my work. I am inspired by everyday life and by the beautiful sceneries throughout my home state of Florida. My late father, artist Joseph LaPierre remains the strongest influence in my work.”

The Lake Worth Art League (LWAL) has some amazing artists.  Being involved in their community and having a lot of fun together are key elements to their success!  This month, two members of LWAL will be showing their work:  George Taylor and Bonnie Wilburn.  Both self-taught artists, each has their own style which are very appealing!

Bonnie’s imagination is driven by her passion for self-expression through art.  And her inspiration lives all around her!  The flowers and plantings in her yard provide her with the images, while her paintings are noted for their unique style, elegance and technique.

"From Our Garden" by Bonnie Wilburn

“From Our Garden” by Bonnie Wilburn

Bonnie often uses a palette knife to create these vibrant pieces of art.  Having lived in the Palm Beaches most of her life and when her health forced an early retirement, Bonnie was able to focus on what comes most naturally … expressing her enthusiasm for living her life through bright & expressive artwork. Bonnie’s positive attitude is infectious!

“Bird’s Nest” by Bonnie Wilburn

Bonnie can create the perfect piece for any purpose.  She has the ability to bring your vision to life. Her skills allow her to create a wide range of artistic expressions which can be used to decorate your home, office, or place of business.

George Taylor is a retired Respiratory Therapist.  He enjoys good music and has always dabbled in art, even as a child.   George tells us, “I love action, people and musicians”.   He is inclined to capture people in action and musicians while playing their instruments, using a variety of artistic mediums.

Mixed Media by George

“Play Me  A Tune” by George Taylor

While George works in watercolor, pastel, acrylic and oil, he confesses that watercolor and pastel are his favorite mediums to use.  George also favors mixing these media as he creates.  His use of particular materials helps the viewer relate to the action happening in the painting.

The Rickie Report hopes that people will come out to support the Lake Worth Art League so it can continue to offer art classes from beginners to the experienced artist, lectures and demonstrations of different techniques and subject matter.   The LWAL undertakes projects for the City of Lake Worth, such as the mural project at the municipal swimming pool.  The group also sponsors outdoor art shows by its members.
