Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers.  The Rickie Report shares a short history of WWKIP DAY and how to RSVP for the Miami meet-up at the Perez Museum.  We hope you will share this with fiber friends world wide so they can make their own connections! This event is Free and Open to all ages!

Saturday,  June 10th

Noon – 5pm

Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)

1103 Biscayne Blvd.      Miami, FL 33132

FREE, BUT PLEASE

RSVP: Pamela Palma   786.897.8856

Open to the public: Hang out, knit, see some art, make new friends, bond over yarn.

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for you and people like you. Who knows you might even bump into your neighbor! Consider this a spark, to ignite a fire; getting all of the closeted knitters out into fresh air.

WHAT IS A “KIP”?

A KIP is a Knitter In Public!

Astrid Salling from Copenhagen, Denmark – organizer of WWKIPDAY since 2011.

THE NUMBER OF KIPS AND COUNTRIES INVOLVED IN 2016:

Total KIPs around the world was 1015 !!

…And 57 Countries were involved !!

In Miami, at the Perez Museum, people were knitting, crocheting, felting, making lace and weaving (2016).

In January, 2016 Pamela Palma, a Miami-based fiber artist, launched Fantastic Fibers Miami for the purpose of creating community. She tells The Rickie Report, “We are a diverse group of serious textile artists making the world a better place, one thread at a time. We work in harmony to bring awareness of the myriad forms of fiber art as well as the historical and contemporary importance of textiles, to South Florida audiences. Through our programs, projects, and events, guild members are building bodies of work for future exhibitions. We welcome opportunities to show our work”.

Then they yarn bombed one of the chairs. Fun!

Learn to knit ~ create decorative fabric for our two upcoming Yarn Bombing events:

Saturday October 28 from 12 – 5 we will Yarn Bomb Omni Park, in downtown Miami in collaboration with PAMM’s education team. Free! Food trucks will be on site.

Friday January 26, 2018 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, in conjunction with Jazz at MoCA and their education programs, we will yarn bomb the building columns on 123rd Street.

In Wausau, Wisconsin, Beth Paustian of The Black Purl, LLC created this piece of Public Art!(@BlackPurl,llc)

In Ontario, at the Highland Grounds Coffee Shop, world renown yarn purveyor, Richard Devrieze stopped by to knit! (@YarnsByRichardDevrieze)

Fantastic Fibers Miami meets on the 4th Saturday of each month at Studio 41 at the Bakehouse Art Complex, Wynwood/Miami. Guests are welcome. Membership applications and information about the guild are available online.
