Imagine our delight and surprise when reading Hadassah Magazine and seeing a painting that looked familiar!  Rickie Leiter, publisher of The Rickie Report interviews Carla Golembe, to share the behind-the-scenes story of how her painting, “The Midwives” was published.  Carla teaches at Old School Square in Delray Beach and at the Boca Museum School of Art, focusing on nurturing her students to express what they feel.  Her acrylic paintings and limited editions are sold internationally. The Rickie Report shares the story and some sneak peeks of her other works of art here.

“The Midwives” by Carla Golembe

 

Carla Golembe tells The Rickie Report, “We live on an increasingly small planet in dangerous times. The state of our world is impossible to ignore. As humans we straddle the river of our potential with one foot on each bank. Our capacity for love and compassion is equaled by our ability to turn our backs on one another and by the biases and hatreds that people have harbored since the beginning of time”.  

 

She says, “And yet I continue to paint beauty, joy, connection and harmony. My paintings are human and universal, multicultural and cross cultural. My intention is to create a visual haven that encourages viewers to enter my domain, dwell in beauty, rejoice in color and breathe. The figures emanate wonder and mystery. The work is evocative rather than descriptive. My interest as an artist lies in expressing how something feels rather than what it looks like. As my subject matter expands to include both my inner vision and the outer world, I find myself painting about inclusiveness and caring for the earth. I am painting hope. This is my authentic personal expression and my purpose as a painter. The world of my paintings is not “realism” but perhaps it’s “magic realism”. It’s the reality of what makes my life worth living, what makes us human and what I want to bring into the world”.

Carla’s paintings are the product of her dreams and experiences. They speak of hope and love, of mystery and delight. Her work expresses the harmony between individuals, between people and animals, people and nature, within a person’s soul. They are colorful and sensual, reflecting the tropical beauty of her home and travels. “The full spectrum of positive emotion echoes through my work. Although the pieces express an optimistic attitude they are not naïve, rather they come from an understanding that pain and anxiety are part of life but joy is a more desirable place to dwell. Although my compositions are designed and defined sometimes there is no gravity in my visual world. The figures often inhabit ambiguous spaces, places where earth, sky and water flow into one another and where light and darkness merge. They are frequently caught in a moment of being or becoming, for it is in that moment that all dreams are possible”.

Color brings life to Carla’s imagery, as she works in acrylic, building layer upon layer of color. With this layering technique she is able to achieve a simple but complex depth. The process is always unfolding, always revealing more. Strong color, shape and composition give impact to the imagery. Her influences come from both traditional Western art and folk art. The result is a blend and balance that is her own unique style.

 

TRR:  Tell us how “The midwives” painting came to be published in Hadassah Magazine

CG:

Back in the early 80’s I was showing my work at Kolbo Fine Judaica in Brookline, MA. I’d been showing there since 1979 and still exhibit paintings there now. In the 80’s I was primarily working in monotype. I had created a piece with a calligraphic border depicting Shifra and Puah, the midwives who saved the male Jewish babies who Pharoah had decreed must be put to death. It was hanging in Kolbo’s window.

 

 

 

 

MANA (Midwives Alliance of North America) was having a national conference in Brookline and one of the attendees saw the Midwives piece when she was walking by Kolbo. She contacted me about it, to ask if MANA could make a poster from it, but it had already sold. We came to an agreement; I would create a new piece that MANA could use for the poster, charge them a low fee for usage rights and, in return, once poster sales profit exceeded my fee they’d pay me a small percentage of the sales. I would keep the piece. The arrangement worked well.

 

A number of months later MANA asked me about the original that I’d created for the poster. They wanted to honor a midwife who was 85 or 90 years old and had delivered hundreds of babies in the Arizona Territory before Arizona was a state. They wanted to give her the piece but they didn’t have much money to spend. I felt privileged that they would want to honor her with my artwork and clearly, right thing to do was to donate the piece to give to this woman and that’s what I did. I think that was a good karmic moment. You give and you receive. Sales of the poster (and later the T- shirt) were strong for almost 30 years and every 6 months or a year I’d get a little royalty check as well as notes and emails about how much the poster meant to midwives all over the country.

 

The image had been taken from a slide and eventually the slide was lost and no one could find the image which had deteriorated over time anyway and so, as of a few years ago, there were no more posters or shirts available. But I’d still occasionally get inquiries about it because someone had seen a poster or a t shirt. My response was always to explain that as far as I knew they were not in circulation but that I would be happy to create an original based on that piece although, of course, it would be different. Every piece is an original and I was now working in acrylic rather than monotype.

 

Last summer I was contacted by Steve Calvin of the Minnesota Birth Center about the poster which he had seen while visiting the Breath of Life Birthing Center in Largo, FL. He commissioned a painting based on the poster. It was really enjoyable revisiting the theme over 30 years later in a different medium and a pleasure working with Steve. He was very happy with the painting which graces the walls of the Birth Center. Then, last winter, I was contacted by Hadassah Magazine about the old poster. They were planning to publish an article on midwives in their March issue and had seen the original poster image. Could they have permission to use it to illustrate the article? I explained that there were no images of the original poster (I had no files and the slide was gone) but that I’d created a new piece for the Minnesota Birth Center and I would contact them to see if it was ok for the magazine to use it.

 

The Birth Center was very gracious and said it was fine with them and that’s how the image came to be used in the magazine, though Hadassah chose not to include the border with the calligraphy.  I am selling prints, t shirts, coffee mugs etc with the image of the new painting through Fine Art America. The request made by the Minnesota Birth Center was that I donate a percentage of my profits from sales of the image to the Breath of Life Birthing Center in Largo, FL. I am happy to do so. So the good karma and love from this piece continues.

TRR:  Your background as an illustrator and artist is so full. Please tell us more.

Carla Golembe is an award winning artist, illustrator, author and teacher. Her work is shown at galleries throughout the United States. Collections include Hyatt Corp, Pan Pacific Hotels, Sheppard Pratt Hospital, Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Worcester Art Museum (Worcester, MA), Academy Art Museum (Easton, MD), Boston Public Library, University College of University of Maryland, Montgomery County MD Art in Public Places and others. She has received artist residencies from the Hambidge Center in Rabun Gap, GA; Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic and Kalani Honua in Hawaii. As an artist in residence in these places she presented her work to the community by giving talks, demonstrations and exhibitions.  Carla’s paintings are represented by Cove Gallery, Wellfleet, MA, Kolbo Fine Judaica, Brookline, MA, and Gallery Galleon, Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Carla’s children’s books are numerous and have sold internationally.  Her other illustration work includes greeting cards, fine illustration stock images for Artville/Getty Images and Imagezoo, educational and medical projects for children and magazine work. She has received awards for her children’s books from the New York Times, Parent’s Choice, The American Folklore Society and PMA, the Independent Book Publisher’s Association as well as others.

Carla has taught fine art and illustration courses at Maryland College of Art and Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art, and Lighthouse Center for the Arts. She worked with elementary school children teaching them to write and illustrate picture books and fold books through the Center for Creative Education and the Milagro Center. She presently teaches painting at Old School Square in Delray Beach and the Art School of the Boca Museum of Art . She has been doing presentations and workshops for children, teens and adults in schools, libraries, museums and other community based venues for over 25 years. Carla has been an artist for five Animals on Parade Public Art Projects including Washington DC’s Party Animals and Pandamania, Ocean City Maryland’s OC Beach Birds, Prince George’s County, Maryland’s Birds-I-View and Palm Beach County’s Wild Things.

Elfrida Schragen Shares “Potpourri” of Paintings At Delray Beach Public Library

Elfrida Schragen‘s original oil paintings are vibrant!  Her “en plein air” style shows us a glimpse of the actual moments, as she captures the atmosphere as well as the subject matter, in time. For inspiration for these particular landscapes, Elfrida draws from her two homes, one in Delray Beach in the USA, and the other in Victoria, BC in Canada – two oceans, different flora and fauna, and flat land verses mountainous terrain. These original oils painted by “Elfrida” are comprised of vibrant portraits, still life, and works created en ”Plein Air” (a style of painting in the outdoors that aims to catch the atmosphere and general tone of a location in a short work time over one or two sessions). “Come Walk With Me” nay Elfrida Schragen

 

 

 

Elfrida was born in Canada into a family of artists where colour, and design were a constant dinner table subject of conversation. However she trained as a teacher and spent her professional life working with autistic, emotionally disturbed and handicapped children. Although she dabbled in art throughout her teaching career, taking the occasional course and participating in solo and group shows, it has been since her retirement that her art has really become defined. Her explorations include eight years of sculpture, five years working with pastels and finally settling into oil painting as her medium of choice.

Patricia Maguire’s SOLO Exhibit at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County

Patricia (Pati) Maguire has been drawing and painting all of her life.  Whether viewing her plein air paintings, international landscapes, figures, portraits or still life creations, one can feel Pati’s sensitivity and sense of being “at one” with her subject matter.  As she says,  “Sometimes, even when my hands are still, I am painting in my mind. I see the world through the prism of light and shapes.”  Everyone will have an opportunity to view her work during a SOLO Exhibition at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County’s Lawrence A. Sheree Blum’s Glasswork Goes World-Wide

Sheree Blum started selling her unique fused glass plates at the Green Market in Wellington only a few short years ago. She used that experience to learn more about marketing and selling her work.  Anthropologie’s order of over 4,000 plates sold in the US and the UK is history.  Recently showcased in People Magazine and Epicurious Magazine, Sheree has a lot of information to share with other artists.  Watch for her new line of cake stands for the 2014 Holiday Season in Anthropologie!  The Rickie Report presents this Feature Article and interview with Sheree Blum of Kicking Glass.

TRR: How did your childhood influence your interest in art?

SB:

 

I grew up in a rural area of New York State, near the Pennsylvania border and am the oldest of 6 children.  My father showed his gifted artistry through his masonry work and my mother was busy with art projects, like ceramics, on a regular basis.  At that time in the US educational system, art played a very large part not only in the classroom, but in our community.  You at least had to try something, whether you liked it or not!

 

I enjoyed those activities but moved on to married life at 18 and then started a family.  Being a mother to my three children was my priority until I went to college at age 27.  I was lucky to attend Jamestown Community College and then St. Bonaventure University, where they provided a nurturing day care setting while I had my classes.  I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education.  In 1990, I moved with my children to Wellington, FL. and starting working in Belle Glade.  I decided to get my Masters degree in Special Education at FAU and worked in the Pahokee Elementary School in Special Education.  I also worked within the school setting of the Dept. of Juvenile Justice, with a focus on academics. I retired just two years ago.

TRR:  How did that lead you to a career in art and specifically glass?

SB:

 

I always used art projects to teach and enhance the learning environment.  I found it helped keep my students’ attention and increase their interest in education.  During my teaching career, I  met the owners of Lee Glass Art, Wayne Taylor and Sheldon Bickford in Mt. Dora Florida.   Always fascinated by color, I convinced them to let me apprentice!  I went to Winter Harbor, Maine during my summer breaks to train in their method.

 

 

If I were a wealthy person, I always said I would own a million dishes!  I love the blending of science, experimentation and art when I work with glass.  And now that I had a lot of dishes, I decided to practice my salesmanship by being a vendor at the Wellington Green Market!

 That is when a buyer from Anthropologie  saw my work.  He bought some pieces, but I had no idea who he was until several months later when I received a call from their tabletop buyer. The lady that was with him did whisper in my ear that this was my lucky day, but I had no idea what this meant.  I learned a lot!  About pricing, figuring out my timing, how to box and ship everything safely. 4,000 dishes were sold throughout the US and United Kingdom in a few months!

 

 

I applied and was accepted to be part of Howard Alan’s Crafts Shows and was able to continue making new pieces, experimenting with new techniques and selling to the public.  At this time, I am a resident artist at Art on Park Gallery, the home of the Artists of Palm Beach County; OSGS in Northwood (West Palm Beach) and Kolbo Gallery of Judaica in Brookline, MA.  I enjoy making apple and honey plates for Rosh Hashanah and Seder Plates for Passover for their catalogue.  In addition, the Iriquois Hotel on Mackinaw Island ordered special dishes they use for service and also sell in their gift shop.

It’s been a real treat for me to see my creations highlighted by being mentioned and shown in Jennie Garth’s Tabletop Decor column, People Magazine (April 14, 2014) and a full page presentation in Epicurious Magazine’s Spring/Summer,2014 (page 52)!  I just found out that my dishes are now listed with Replacements,Ltd. as well!

TRR:  What are your favorite as well as challenging moments?

SB:

 

There is nothing like the excitement I feel when I am creating!  And I love meeting the people at the shows, knowing I am sending my creations out to new homes where they will be appreciated. The most challenging part of being a full time professional artist is marketing and selling one’s work.  But you have to do it in order to keep creating!

TRR:  Do you have any helpful hints for emerging artists?

SB:

 

Be brave!  Have a business plan – do your math.  Don’t just jump off the building without Plan A, Plan B and maybe even Plan C!  Don’t hesitate to take risks.  Be professional in your demeanor and behavior at all times.  Do your homework – how many dishes fit into the box safely?  Where do you get the boxes?  Don’t forget the paper slips in between each dish.  Everything you use counts, is necessary and adds to your price.  Consider your price ranges and whether you want to sell retail, wholesale or both.  Be consistent and ask for what your artwork is worth!  I hope that other artists also consider helping the community by making some donations.  I recently sent seven sets of dishes to families who lost everything from tornado damage in MS.

TRR:   What story does your art tell?

SB:

 

I bring bright color into people’s everyday world.  It may not seem important in the grand scheme of things, but I hope that these dishes will conjure up happy memories and become family heirlooms.  This is a quieter voice than the one I used when I was teaching, but I believe it is the same message.  Ordinary objects can imbue happiness.

TRR:  Please take us from the beginning of an  idea to a finished piece of work.

SB:

 

 

I usually start with a big idea.  For example, I wanted to create some glass pieces with an ocean feel and incorporate coral reefs.  I find designs that meet the criterion – they could come from a piece of fabric, a photo or other objects.  My idea begins to solidify.  Then I decide on colors and move forward with a prototype to test out my theory.  Does it meet my standards?  If not, it becomes a salad dish at my house.  If it does, I make more!   Sometimes the need to meet the requirements of the marketplace influence my work – otherwise I wouldn’t have a thriving business!  And then, there are pieces I just feel I have to try…to meet my own needs.

TRR:   How do you maintain your level of creativity?

SB:

 

I let my mine wander.  I dabble in watercolors and enjoy playing Scrabble.

Susan Oakes’ photography recently took an award and cash prize at the Artists Association of Jupiter at A Unique Art Gallery.  Her wonder filled work can be seen at Palm Beach Home Interiors, Lake Avenue in Lake Worth beginning June 2nd as well as  at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre for their 18th Annual Member’s Show.  The Opening Reception takes place on Wednesday, June 11th from 6- 8 pm.  The Centre is located at 415 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach.  The exhibit is free and open to the public.

This year’s MEMBERS’ SHOW is being judged by internationally renowned photographer Vincent Versace, a pioneer in the art and science of digital photography. Hailed by Nikon as “one of the top photography artists and visual storytellers in the world,” Versace is a recipient of the Computerworld Smithsonian Award in Media Arts & Entertainment and the Shellenberg fine art award, and his work is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of American History.

Also on exhibition at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre will be PICTURE MY WORLD, which has served disadvantaged children throughout the Palm Beaches since 1997. Bitmap Images vs. Vector Graphics

 

 

Susan explains, “Bitmap Images- also known as raster or pixel based images, are based on a grid of colors known as pixels. You edit groups of pixels rather than objects or shapes. They represent subtle gradations of shade and color, they are appropriate for continuous tone images such as photographs or artwork created in painting programs”.

“The disadvantage, Susan shares, is they contain a fixed number of pixels and can lose detail and quality when scaled up. If you’ve ever downloaded an image from the internet (low resolution) and then tried to print it (high resolution) only to discover that it looks awful, you demonstrated this fact”.

“Vector graphics are made of lines and curves defined by mathematical objects called vectors.They retain their crispness if they are moved or resized. They are appropriate for illustrations, type, and graphics such as logos which must be scaled to different sizes. So a logo designed for a business card can be enlarged to display on a store front or billboard without any loss of quality whatsoever. If this is tried with raster or bitmapped images they become blurry or pixelated and fall apart”, Susan shares.

TRR:  Tell us about your background

SO:

 

I am a well fed ‘starving’ artist. I tend to inhabit a nether world between digital painting, photography and illustration. Although I have a background in traditional media (anything which uses hands, artist tools, and pigments, without the aid of computer hardware and software), I now work mostly in digital media, although I regularly get the yearning to get my hands back into charcoal, paint, clay, etc. There is an tactile immediacy about traditional media which is removed in the digital world, but on the other side of the coin, the digital world presents tools, methods and capabilities which are impossible in traditional media. There are, however, many commonalities, including basic composition, form, color theory, etc. which are fundamental to both. I prefer to dwell on these commonalities rather than the differences…..

TRR:  How do you explain the complexities of your work?

SO:

 

I find that many people don’t really understand what they are looking at when viewing my work. Recently at one of my exhibits, one of the gallery owners looked at my piece and said to me, “It looks like you ran a few filters.” Nothing could be farther from the truth. There is nothing “automatic” or “mechanized” about my art. The kiss of death is usually when I admit to doing “computer art”, “digital imaging” or <gasp> “Photoshop”.

 

 

 

Now I know Photoshop has gotten a bad rap lately, what with women’s bodies “Photoshopped” into ideals of impossible-to-obtain “beauty” fueled by the beauty/fashion and Hollywood worlds. I am a Photoshop teacher, and although I demonstrate how to do these questionable things, I always implore my students to retouch responsibly. Just because you can do something does not necessarily mean you should do it. I teach not just the What and How, but the Why.

 

TRR:  So, many people assume that because your artwork has a computer component, it is less valued?

SO:

 

 

Just because I’ve used computer hardware and software to create or enhance an image doesn’t mean that I pushed a few buttons and I was done. On the contrary this is a double edged sword. When working in traditional media, say oils, and you change your mind too many times (depending upon the pigments used) you will make mud on the canvas. In watercolor, you may wear a hole in the paper. But working digitally, you can undo and redo countless times, even start over and ….. eventually ….. you grow old and die! I find that I must discipline myself to recognize when I’ve learned as much as I will learn from a piece and that it is time to finish and move on!

My photography starts out with a digital image which is then enhanced with software. This may entail special effects, yes, but it is applied by hand with a graphics tablet, so I am simulating the action of drawing or painting with the stylus. When I say “digital painting” I mean it. I use one stroke at a time in many instances to build up the effect I want. A typical photo will include many layers upon layers with different effects which interact with each other to create different looks.

 

 

My vector illustrations many times will start with a base photo I’ve taken, but when I’m done the photo is not visible at all. Vector illustrations, by their nature, have a crispness, a clarity which is not typical of pixel-based images.

Another area I love to explore is photo collage, of which I have provided a few samples. The large one, “Aqua Vista” is a composite of thirteen different photos essentially melded into one composition. Here, I look for how the individual images relate to each other and then use the tools and methods in Photoshop to create the composite. Again, they contain a multitude of layers and effects, not unlike a multi media piece. Often times when I take photos it is not to use them as stand alone images, but as part of a composite.

Digital Photo Painting: My latest exploration is with vegetation which is past its prime. (Sounds better than dead leaves.) I am seeking to reveal the structure and intricate detail of these specimens when they have started to wane. I see a beauty in this phase which is the opposite of the start of the life cycle. Many times I am astonished at the detail which is captured in the file, but is not evident until I tease it out with the methods I use.

JUDGES WANT TO BE shocked or amazed, amused or educated – to see things in a way not seen  before.

 

For the amateur it’s a learning process that mimics being commissioned. You are working to a very  loose brief, but you are attempting to impress others rather than just yourself.

 

 

For the professional it is of course a chance to achieve greater exposure for your work, and  therefore generate more work, but it is also a chance to ‘commission yourself’ rather than working to a client’s directions.  Done correctly that can be creatively very liberating.

Being part of an exhibit is something to be proud of, having people see your work and getting the  chance to see how people respond to your work will give you invaluable feedback in your growth as  an artist and is an important part of being an artist.

 

 

 

WINNING IMAGES have a “Wow” factor with with a story to say to be truly award-winning.

The image needs to be artfully constructed and technically well executed…beyond being something pleasurable to look at in a decorative way –— it should provoke or calm,  educate or entertain with innovation, humor or add revelation.

Rejections and Not Winning

 

 

  • There may be several hundred entries with only room for only 50 pieces to be exhibited.

 

  • More entered pieces are not accepted than shown

 

  • It doesn’t necessarily mean the non-accepted work is not good,  just not suitable for that exhibit, in that judges opinion, at that time or maybe needs just a little change  to be better.

 

  • Sometimes it is simply a matter of space.

 

Art is very subjective and even the most expert opinion, is just that, an opinion.

 

 

Winning, the difference between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place and honorable mentions could be so slight,  the same judge on a different day could easily pick a different order of winners. Being recognized as one of the best is an achievement.

 

 

Any Award is good and can become part of your resume. It is good practice to keep track of your  achievements.

Many of Durga Garcia’s images can be found in Public and Private collections.  She is a South Florida based freelance professional photographer of art for artists, portraits, commercial projects & events. Durga has several long term projects and books to her credit.

 

Durga brings a most uncommon background to her pictures.  She has lived in many countries and across America, working as a racehorse trainer, equine veterinary paramedic, yoga teacher, member of the U.S. International Pistol Team and certified art appraiser.  She has parlayed her years of experience as a certified art appraiser into a special talent for conveying those nuanced details in her own work. Durga maintains her Senior Fine Art Appraisal accreditations.    She lectures on photography for area groups, camera clubs and art guilds. Durga hosts a blog for photographers giving tips and tricks of the business and is writing a book for kids, “Your First Photography Book”.

 

In September, 2014 Durga will take part in Palm Beach State College’s “BARK” Invitational Exhibit (Palm Beach Gardens, FL). She has been invited to Tuscany in Spring, 2014 to lead a multi-discipline workshop plus a Photo Tour of Iceland in Fall, 2014.

Photography Workshop Focuses on Human Form in the Natural Environment

The Artists in Florida is sponsoring a special workshop focused on capturing the human form in the natural environment.  On April 19th, Robert Swinson will lead the small group by providing technical support and guidance as they explore the effects of texture, light and form.  Participants will work with an accomplished figure model and the workshop will take place at a private botanical preserve in Palm Beach County.  The Rickie Report shares the details and urges those interested in signing up – this is limited to 8 participants!

With over thirty five years experience in photography encompassing 35mm through large format studio cameras Robert has worked with many artistic and commercial uses of photography and graphics arts. His professional roles have included commercial desktop publishing, color separation for the printing industry, studio photography for both large products and portraiture, location in fashion and product to now include video and film production work with lighting and camera work. He has done this while working in commercial printing, professional video and film production, and corporate marketing in several industries.

In recent years Robert has added the role of instructor and mentor with his classes in basic photography through studio lighting and figure classes and workshops. He spent three years with the Palm Beach Photographic Centre as volunteer coordinator and teaching assistant before joining the Armory Art Center in 2008 to teach basic and intermediate photography along with studio figure photography. Currently he hosts the Photo Salon, a twice monthly meeting of photographers at the Armory. His photographic work is seen in exhibitions as well as being published commercially.

Carla Golembe is an award winning artist, illustrator, author and teacher.  Her work is shown at galleries throughout the United States. Collections include Hyatt Corp, Pan Pacific Hotels, Sheppard Pratt Hospital, Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Worcester Art Museum (Worcester, MA), Academy Art Museum (Easton, MD), Boston Public Library and others.  She has received artist residencies from the Hambidge Center in Rabun Gap, GA; Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic and Kalani Honua in Hawaii.  As an artist in residence in these places she presented her work to the community by giving talks, demonstrations and exhibitions.

Carla wrote and illustrated several children’s books: A Story of Surfing, The Story of Hula, M is for Maryland, Washington DC ABC’s, Annabelle’s Big Move and Dog Magic. She illustrated Why the Sky is Far Away, The Creation, People of Corn, How Night Came from the Sea and The Woman in the Moon, Sun and Honeybees.  She also wrote and illustrated the Zippy and Zoe series, published in Taiwan.

 

Carla’s other illustration work includes greeting cards, fine illustration stock images for Artville/Getty Images and Imagezoo, educational and medical projects for children and magazine work. She has received awards for her children’s books from the New York Times, Parent’s Choice, The American Folklore Society and PMA, the Independent Book Publisher’s Association to name a few.

Carla taught fine art and illustration courses at Maryland College of Art and Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art, and Lighthouse Center for the Arts (Tequesta,FL).  She worked with elementary school children teaching them to write and illustrate picture books and fold books through the Center for Creative Education and the Milagro Center. She now teaches painting and drawing at Delray Beach Center for the Arts and the Art School of the Boca Museum of Art .  She’s been doing presentations and workshops for children, teens and adults in schools, libraries, museums and other community based venues for almost  20 years.  Carla has been an artist for five Animals on Parade Public Art Projects including Washington DC’s Party Animals and Pandamania, Ocean City Maryland’s OC Beach Birds, Prince George’s County, Maryland’s Birds-I-View and Palm Beach County’s Wild Things.

 

Carla tells The Rickie Report, “We live on an increasingly small planet in dangerous times.  The state of our world is impossible to ignore.  Some artists choose to chronicle the specific time in which we live, to reflect our history at this moment.  I choose to paint imagery that transcends the moment.  It is human and universal.  My intention is to create a visual haven that encourages viewers to enter my personal vision, to relax, smile and breathe.”

Carla goes on to explain, “My paintings are the product of my dreams and experiences.  They speak of hope and love, of mystery and delight.    My work expresses the harmony between individuals, between people and animals, people and nature, within a person’s soul.  They are colorful and sensual, reflecting the tropical beauty of my home and travels. The full spectrum of positive emotion echoes through my work.   Although the pieces express an optimistic attitude they are not naïve, rather they come from an understanding that pain and anxiety are part of life but joy is a more desirable place to dwell…. there is no gravity in my visual world. The figures often inhabit ambiguous spaces, places where earth, sky and water flow into one another and where light and darkness merge.  They are frequently caught in a moment of being or becoming, for it is in that moment that all dreams are possible.”

Color brings life to Carla’s imagery.  She works in acrylic, building layer upon layer of color.  With this layering technique  she is able to achieve a simple but complex depth. The process is always unfolding, always revealing more.  Strong color, shape and composition give impact to the imagery.  Her influences come from both traditional Western art and folk art.  The result is a blend and balance that is her own unique style.

 

Educated at Bennington College, Bennington, VT. BA in Art (1972) and Instituto Allende, Mexico MFA in Painting, Cum Laude.
