Born in Newark, New Jersey, Herman Schreiber graduated from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts in 1934. An artist who used pastels exclusively, he was a disciple of the “School of Ultra Realistic Painting.” He created his pictures delicately and meticulously rendering the final products, which capture both images and emotions. His landscapes, portraits, and figurative works are often mistaken for actual photographs.
During his lifetime, Herman exhibited his work in gallleries and museums in New Jersey where he won many awards including First Place at the South Orange Annual Art Show, Bloomfield College, and Montclair State College exhibits. In Florida as a member of the Delray Art League 1988 – 1995, he exhibited in shows at Old School Square and other Delray sites and won numerous Blue, Red, and White Ribbons. In 1994 & 1995 his work was in the 55th & 56th Annual Juried Exhibitions at the Society of Four Arts in Palm Beach.
This exibit fills the lobby, hallways, and activity room in the Weisman Center and includes over forty of his exquisite pastel paintings. Maxine’s book The SCHREIBERS: The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree, which is published on Amazon.com, will be a available for sale at the opening event.
Maxine tells us, “Art has been an important part of my life as far back as I can remember. My dad, Herman Schreiber, was a master artist, a true “Renaissance man.” To support our family, he worked as a jeweler, a trumpet player, an optician, and a tax accountant. But he was always a visual artist, and his creative ability and temperament were a major influence on me. When I was young, we spent hours looking through his treasured book World Famous Paintings, and he taught me how to draw.”
In 1993, he said, “I’m 79 years old and have a back-log of requests to last me until I’m 120. I take my time and work at my own pace. If I had deadlines to worry about, I wouldn’t enjoy it. After all, I’m retired I’m not working for a living. I had to give up playing the trumpet. My front teeth and lips gave out, but my hands are steady, my imagination is vivid, and I enjoy painting.”
And the adage is true….Maxine Schreiber is a fine artist in her own right. She exhibits her own work and is a member of the Artists of Palm Beach County, WITVA, NAWA and Armory Art Center. Maxine’s newest creative work is a children’s book which she wrote and illustrated, “The Story of Daphne the Duck”.
