“Window On The World”, Original Art Exhibit From National Award Winning Author/Illustrators Opens June 3 At Lighthouse ArtCenter. Tequesta’s Cultural Jewel Offers Plethora Of Events Including Summer Camp!

Galleries in Florida’s metropolitan areas would give anything for an exhibition like the one planned this summer at the Lighthouse ArtCenter!  For the 3rd summer in a row, the Lighthouse ArtCenter is celebrating an installation with some of the biggest names in the world of the children’s publishing industry. “Window On The World” will exhibit from June 3 – August 10. A docent-led tour for Groups or Field trips is available, which includes a make-and-take art object! You could expect a show of artwork by internationally known cultural icons in Miami, Orlando, or Tampa, but right here, in the Village of Tequesta, the most famous children’s book illustrators in the world show their original paintings.  How lucky are we? In addition, Summer Camp starts June 3, with lots of activities. Rickie Report shares the details about Summer Camp, the Exhibit, some sneak peeks, and information about making advanced reservations for tours/field trips.

“Sisters and Champions” Illustrations by Floyd Cooper

Visitors interested in acquiring new paintings for their collection will find many pieces available for purchase.  Summer camps looking for cultural experiences for their students are able to schedule docent-lead tours of the exhibition along with make-and-take art projects. During the dog days of summer, when another afternoon at the beach doesn’t inspire enthusiasm, bring your friends, neighbors and your Great Aunt Velma for a cultural experience they’ll always remember.

Google any one of these names and you’re sure to find pages upon pages of national and international awards: Peter H. Reynolds (The Dot, Ish, The Word Collector), Floyd Cooper (The Blacker the Berry), Brian Lies (The Rough Patch, Bats at the Beach), Emily McCully (Mirette on the High Wire), Erin E. and Philip Stead (A Sick Day for Amos McGee).  Today’s elementary school generation know and love the books, teachers and librarians around the country watch closely for their new titles and you should, too.  Picture Books are often a child’s first introduction to the arts.  They act as a mirror as well as a window on the world.

From “Mirette on the High Wire”, illustrated by Emily McCully

Floyd Cooper is probably one of the best known, most celebrated, and highly regarded artists in the industry.  He has won the Coretta Scott King Award and Honor multiple times.  In an online interview about his 2019, “The Rough Patch”, Brian Lies says, “We all experience rough patches in our lives: loss, disappointment, and darkness. I wanted Evan’s story to provide readers with a safe way to experience those feelings and know they can come back from them. Ultimately, I see this as a book about hope!”

From the Horn Book Review, “Sometimes a children’s book is so heart-warming it needs no greater purpose for reading than just to enjoy it. And sometimes you get lucky and a book is not only sweet, but perfect for that lesson you want to teach about characters! “A Sick Day for Amos McGee”, written by Philip C. Stead and illustrated by Erin Stead, is one such book.”

And, the reviews read like this for an extraordinary new tale, “The Word Collector”, by Peter H. Reynolds:  “Peter H. Reynolds always manages to walk a delicate line with his books – make that a couple lines: weighty but not weighed down. Universal yet kid-centric. No easy feat.”-Travis Jonker, School Library Journal   “Some people collect stamps. Some people collect coins. Some people collect art. And Jerome?  Jerome collected words . . . “In this extraordinary new tale from Peter H. Reynolds, Jerome discovers the magic of the words all around him — short and sweet words, two-syllable treats, and multi-syllable words that sound like little songs. Words that connect, transform, and empower.   From the creator of “The Dot”, “I Am Human”, and “Happy Dreamer” comes a celebration of finding your own words — and the impact you can have when you share them with the world.”

About 500 ArtCampers (some who hail from as far away as California or New Jersey) hop, skip and fly into the School of Art each summer to exercise their creative muscles using traditional mediums like clay and paint.  But for the second year in a row the campers will also spend a portion of each day inside the Gallery, surrounded by the artwork they already recognize.  Different from any other summer, in 2019, the Lighthouse ArtCenter ArtCampers are working collaboratively with the students of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts to craft a play with music based on the bestselling book “The Word Collector” © 2018 by Peter H. Reynolds, originally published by Orchard Books, Scholastic, used with permission of Pippin Properties, Inc.

• Lighthouse ArtCenter ArtCamp hours:  9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (before and aftercare can be arranged)

• ArtCamp runs for 8 weeks, beginning June 3, ending August 2, and closed for the week of the 4th of July.

• Scholarships are available with proof of need

Her photographic work explores the themes of the shadows, reflections and transparencies and has been the subject of several international exhibitions.  In addition to working as a photographer and film maker, Ms Safieddine is a journalist, art critic and writer focusing on culture and history. In 1988 the Metropolitan Museum of Art commissioned her to create a documentary on the restoration of the Minbar in the Grand Mosque of Koutoubia.
