At the workshop, students will enjoy plenty of discussion, practical demonstrations, hands on work and individual instruction. Students are encouraged to bring their own design and use a variety of fusions from the selection Martin brings. The workshop focus is the mosaic process and as each student’s pace is unique – some may not finish. To mitigate the possibility that a student may not complete his project  special fusion kits (new this season) to build specific designs will be available. When you register, you can select a specific kit.

Martin’s engaging style and humor is the highlight of the workshop. In addition to just having fun, students are going to hear Martin’s take on some of the mosaic fundamentals such as andamento, keystoning, grout and other techniques. Martin will also do various demonstrations throughout the workshop.

About Martin Cheek:

Martin Cheek has been creating mosaics professionally for 30 years and has shared his expertise in six best-selling books on this subject.  With a degree in graphic design from Exeter College of Art & Design in the United Kingdom, Martin went on to work in the film industry as an animator where he set up his own production company, Cheeky Films Ltd.  He has worked on award winning films and puppet animation projects including The Wind in the Willows, Paddington Bear, Noddy in Toyland, and Portland Bill.

As a full time professional mosaic artist, Martin spends his time working on commissioned projects for both private and corporate clients that include museums, schools, parks, and hospitals.  Martin teaches workshops throughout the U.S., U.K., New Zealand, Australia, and Europe.

Martin’s latest book, Fused Glass Mosaics, is a good illustration of  the exciting medium of using fused glass mosaics. The text is a rich bestowment of Martin’s detail to order, his passion and humor, and his you-can-do-it encouragement. This book serves as an art course in mosaics, whereby each chapter offers a different stylistic challenge. In fulfilling these projects, the reader will develop their own individual style.

Glass by Tony Glander

Wanting to further expand the quality of his work, Tony added silk screening to his many skills. “I never really cared for faces done in stained glass so one day I had a brainstorm – use a silk screened photo on the glass.” He tried using a picture of his wife and the results were simply stunning. “After that piece, I was hooked on using screen printing anytime I could. Although I have created a lot of really nice pieces, my best works of art are my young children Maya and Lucas.”

Wardell Publications Inc. was founded in 1983 by Randy Wardell. In 1977 Randy opened a full service stained glass studio offering everything from Suncatchers to Cathedral windows (well maybe church windows is a more apt description). The studio also offered glass craft instruction and sold the related tools, glass & materials. The name of the company was Sandpiper Studios and it was (and still is) located in Belleville, a small city in eastern Ontario, Canada with a population of 38,000, so the axiom “anything [in glass] for a buck” wasn’t too far off.

Randy’s stained glass students would often ask for the pattern to make of one the custom designed lampshades on display in the Sandpiper Studios’ showroom. Encouraged by these requests he conducted a little market research that revealed a need for reliable, full-size pattern books. So in 1983 he formed Wardell Publications and released his first lampshade pattern book. Since then he has personally written 12 additional books and Wardell Publications Inc has released more than 50 products since it began.
