The Wellington Art Society will feature Ilene Adams of The Marketing Works of Palm Beach as their presenter at their meeting on November 9, 2016. The group meets at the Wellington Community Center on Forest Hill Boulevard just east of City Hall. Ilene offers a seminar, The Art of marketing Your Art, and many artists who have attended Ilene’s seminars have been accepted into traditional galleries, juried exhibitions, won awards and made major sales in Florida and internationally. Ilene says about her own work, “The artists that influenced me the most are Robert Rauschenberg and Maxfield Parish. Rauchenberg’s influence is apparent in my paintings that incorporate paint, collage, photographic images and artifacts. They evoke a feeling of nostalgia or of imaginary places. Parrish is evident in her photography in her enhanced use of color”. Ilene’s work will be exhibited at several shows and galleries this coming season.

Artist Bobby Winston, Former Jupiter Resident, Has Growing Fan Base In Brazil

Former Jupiter resident, Bobbie Winston has lived a number of lives in her three-quarters of a century on this planet. Born in Brooklyn, New York and eventually settling in Jupiter, Florida, this dynamic woman is the mother of grown children, a performing artist, an interior designer, a radio station owner, a business woman and an entrepreneur… and since 1988 – an expatriate. “La Femme Bobbíe” known for her colorful style and outgoing personality, emigrated from South Florida to Rio de Janeiro in 1988. She learned to speak fluent Portuguese and began a new chapter of her life as a successful business advisor and personal counselor to high-level Brazilian corporate executives. While doing all this, she began to increasingly find joy and expression in painting – at first, as a hobby. Now, her paintings prominently appear on the walls of a number of local shops and cafes in the world-famous tourist lure that is her Copacabana neighborhood. Among her life credentials: mother of grown children, performing artist, interior designer, radio station owner, business woman and entrepreneur. And since 1988 – expatriate.

 

 

 

 

 

Bobbie – known to a growing number of friends and followers by the nickname “La Femme Bobbíe” for her colorful style and outgoing personality – emigrated from South Florida to Rio de Janeiro in 1988. She learned to speak fluent Portuguese and began a new chapter of her life as a successful business advisor and personal counselor to high-level Brazilian corporate executives. She coaches them on how to engage with Americans and other English-speaking associates in the expanding global marketplace.

While doing all this, she began to increasingly find joy and expression in painting – at first, as a hobby. Over a number of years, she developed a body of work displaying a striking, eye-catching look with provocative themes that began to fill the walls of her Copacabana beachfront apartment. She kept most of her paintings during this period, while giving many away as gifts to friends and business clients. Her paintings prominently appear on the walls of a number of local shops and cafes in the world-famous tourist lure that is her neighborhood.

Word of Bobbie’s talent began spreading throughout greater-Rio and beyond… but Bobbie did not take herself seriously enough to think about “going pro” and actually selling her pieces. Two relatively recent events began to change that.

First, Bobbie discovered the Rickie Report through an American relative and became fascinated by the dynamics of the thriving artist and artisan community that this publication covers “back home.”  Second, and almost simultaneously, she began to receive inquiries about her paintings from international art collectors who were discovering them posted on her Facebook page.

Bobbíe tells the Rickie Report, “The power of social media in promoting art is amazing. I wasn’t even trying to market myself, per se… just sharing my paintings with friends and relatives back in the U.S. All of a sudden, people I’ve never heard of are contacting me with interest in buying specific pieces. And here in Rio, people are calling me asking for appointments to come to my apartment and see my home gallery.” Bobbíe adds, “I still haven’t even gotten around to launching a website.”

Her work displays a highly-identifiable style. Most of her pictures are either wildly abstract portraits, full human figures, or imaginative, surrealistic scenarios – all marked by dramatic features and bold, striking colors.

When asked about the abstract nature of her work, Bobbíe replies, “’Abstract is in the eye of the beholder. My paintings are not abstract to me. Perhaps, they represent my quirky vision of the reality that is humanity and the world.” Her paintings reflect the multi-cultural nature of Brazil, whimsical sexuality, and what she describes as her own “relentless imagination.”

TALKERS magazine, the national trade publication serving the talk radio and television industries in the United States, commissioned Bobbíe to paint a special portrait symbolizing a female talk show host for a series of five articles collectively titled, “The State of Women on Talk Radio.”  The painting, dubbed by its creator, “Two-Toned Talker,” is an abstract image of a multi-racial/multi-cultural female wearing headsets and talking on a microphone.

The publication’s executive art director, Marcia Daly, tells the Rickie Report, “We turned to Bobbíe for this special project because she is still largely unknown to American art appreciators and we wanted something really strikingly original to punctuate the importance of this series of articles that addresses the gender imbalance of performers that has long existed within this segment of broadcasting.”

Bobbíe, who is self-taught, works very quickly creating at least one painting per week. She employs tools and materials readily available.  She explains, “The art stock I work upon is manufactured in France and especially designed to be used with water base paint.  The size of the paper is either 30cm x 43cm (large) or 21cm x 30cm (small).  There are various manufacturers such as Bic, Faber Castell, etc.  In Brazil, they are called ‘water base paint pens’ (when translated into English).  I have no idea what they call them in the U.S.  Maybe they are called markers.

Bobbíe continues, “Dealing on this level, the marketing of my art is new to me. I receive great gratification knowing that people like my work and are even willing to pay for it.” According to Bobbíe, she has been selling her paintings for between $250 U.S. and $1500 U.S. “depending upon how important the individual piece is to me personally.” She adds, “I still find it difficult, in many cases, to part with a painting knowing that I will never see it again in person… or on the wall of a friend… or at a local shop here in Copacabana.”

The Art of Marketing Your Art

Ilene and Rickie’s previous Art Marketing Seminars have taken emerging artists and hobbyists to a new level of professionalism. The information they provide in two sessions will be enhanced by Hugh O’Neill’s experience as a gallerist and international artist. The basic skills and knowledge necessary to take any individual to a more successful level will be shared through power point, hand outs, anecdotal information, suggested reading, sharing of resources and hands-on exercises.

 

 

While the seminars center of interest is on art, we welcome other entrepreneurs and business people to attend. Most of the principals are practical for anyone trying to market their ideas or products.

 

 

The two sessions will be held at En Plein Air International Studios located at 226 Center Street Unit A8 in Jupiter, FL. Pre-registration is required for the $100 two-part seminar. Payment can be made via Paypal or by personal check. Space is limited to 25 people, so everyone has enough time to share their questions. Light refreshments will be served. We will be happy to recommend local restaurants, if you want to eat dinner before the seminars,which begin promptly at 7 pm. At least 3 good quality jpegs  ( sending low resolution for web and higher resolution for print makes the life of an editor much easier – we’ll talk about this later)

Title your jpegs AND include your name!  

Include: medium, size and price

Your Website address.

Links to Facebook and any other Social Media you are involved with.

Your phone number  (Really!  Some of us still call people to confirm pieces of information)

Kill Date – What is the latest date a publication can use your material?

An overview of the exhibit ( Does it have a theme, how many pieces were accepted, what do the Exhibit or Gallery Coordinators want the public to know?)

Email address and phone number

 

 

Making It Easy For The Editor

Include all of the information in one email or one snail mail 

Send  jpegs 

For each jpeg, please include Your Name, Title, Medium, Size and Price

No handwritten notes

Send a cohesive Press Release ( If you need help with this, we can suggest a template to get you started)

Follow up – with an email or a phone call to see if there is anything else you need to send

Other Points to Consider:

Ask the gallery or Exhibit Coordinator where their Press Releases were sent.

Ask if it is OK for you to send out a Press Release on your own behalf?

Do they want you to only use their press release or can you add some personalization to theirs?

How many exhibit or gallery cards will you be given to distribute?

While it is lots of fun to have your family and friends come to the Opening,  you also need to contact previous clients. Even if they don’t live nearby, this will pique their interest and remind them about your work.  The goal is to help bring in sales!

TRR:   As OSGS celebrates its first anniversary opening in Northwood, can you take us through the process from your initial thoughts to actually opening?

It comes as a surprise to both Jonathon and me that the year has sped by so quickly.  It seems like only yesterday we were contemplating the thought of a gallery and working together on the project.  Where to begin, cost, location, and business plan were all questions we posed to each other and our spouses.  This was, after all, a family affair and one that would impact us all.  Evelyn just hit retirement and Jonathon was at a crossroads with his professional outlook.  This new venture seemed to fit our paths.

Months prior to my retirement from the 11th Circuit US Court of Appeals kept me very busy with the idea of a gallery.  With a masters degree in Library Science specializing in archives and conservation, I had already worked in a business library as well as corporate, special and university libraries.  I had researched the venture we would be undertaking and knew that selling art would not be easy.

We both knew that we had something special to contribute to the world of art.  Jonathon holds the masters degree in landscape architecture from Auburn and worked with firms in Montgomery, Atlanta and West Palm Beach.  He also created his own art (painting, rock posters, screen printing and photography), exhibited in several galleries, and accepted commissions (his art even appears on race cars!).   Before becoming a librarian I earned my undergraduate degree in art history from the University of Alabama.  I painted and created fiber arts.  My knowledge of modern art is so extensive that years ago on a visit to the Birmingham Museum of Art I even discovered that one of Rauschenberg’s works was hung the wrong way!

Showing no fear and only enthusiasm we set forth the task of doing our research on what it takes to run a gallery in today’s market.  With tenacity, love of art, empathy, and courage mixed with fearless wonder we did our leg work.  We read such books as Making It in the Art World: New Approaches to Galleries, Shows, and Raising Money, by Brainard Carey.  We did our literature research by reading articles, looking at multiple business plans and contacting SCORE here in West Palm Beach.  We trained with a custom framer and attended workshops to learn and hone our skills in custom framing.  We visited several different locations, in particular, those that Jonathon felt had the most potential for creative arts and growth.  We joined the Chamber of Commerce and took advantage of the many workshops and lectures as well as opportunities for networking.

Still, art is a hard sell, and takes a lot of creativity and working in tandem with artists and the art community.  So while we located our current location and went about the business of renovating the space, Jonathon went to work on our web page and social media.  I took on the arduous task of getting licenses, security, insurance and tax needs necessary to run a business, as well as teaching myself how to operate an online bookkeeping system.  We did our homework and researched different operating contracts for exhibiting artists before deciding on what we felt would be beneficial to both the artist and us.

Art is not only a ‘hard sell’ but we opened our doors when the economy was (and is still is) suffering from the economic downturn.  The business model we developed has worked for us so far.  We are still a ‘new’ business and it will definitely take more time to establish our roots, but we are on the right path.

 

We started our space with an empty shell that needed a lot of work.  After making a number of renovations and improvements, we designed many floorplans before deciding on a one that worked best for our spatial experience.  Our end result matched our vision within the walls we had.

Eventually we got to a point where we needed to send out ‘calls to artists’  that may want to exhibit with us.  We have been very fortunate in having talented artists approach us and allow us to exhibit incredibly excellent diverse art.

 

The Rickie Report was crucial in shining a light on our new venture with artists across the Palm Beaches.  That was really an early cornerstone of our success.  Without The Rickie Report we would not have been able to bring talented artists into our gallery in such a short period of time. Those artists provided a lot of feedback and insight that we took seriously and used to help build our vision as well.

TRR:  How have you integrated into the community?

Jonathon:

The idea of giving back to others is not new to us because we are suddenly business owners.  Our family has always given back in many different ways.  The online art auction we sponsored in February with all proceeds benefitting Place of Hope is a recent example.  Our artists supported us and donated beautiful pieces to the auction.

Last summer we initiated Bring Your Own Chair Lecture Series (BYOC).  This initiative offers free lectures by our exhibiting artists to the community in order to learn more about art, different mediums/techniques, and what it takes to create, experiment, and have fun with art, either through educational training or self training.  Through BYOC we’ve made art more approachable and not so far fetched to the community.

ArtSynery was another way we integrated into the community in our first year of business.  Aside from our individual artists and exhibitions, ArtSynergy allowed us to reach beyond the Northwood Village corridor.  We cannot put into words how exciting it was for us to have been a direct part of ArtPalmBeach. That our gallery and our exhibited artists were awarded a prestigious opportunity to exhibit in that art fair!  That was followed by seeing more of our artists represented in the American International Fine Art Fair.

We worked very hard with the other gallery owners in Northwood to reach new goals and to establish Northwood as an art destination for West Palm Beach.   We helped establish the Second Saturday Art Walks as well as our own gallery exhibitions.  Essentially we’re not just juggling our own business affairs but also helping to see that Northwood turns the corner and becomes something better as well.

TRR:  What are the most important things we should know about OSGS?

 

 

  • We are here to share the experience of beauty, creativity and wonder.
  • We hope to bring joy and pride to the community.
  • We are neighbors and friends to all that enter or pass our doors.
  • We want OSGS to be a venue where artists can exhibit their works to further their exposure.
  • We want the community to know that we Custom Frame for the Public!!!  Yes, this is a priority for us as a business because it brings in critical funding for OSGS to stay afloat.  Persons have come in for framing and walked out with art from our gallery.
  • We work hard to find new ways to bring exposure to both OSGS and Northwood Village.  We are a young business and we are trying new things, most of them for the first time.
  • We encourage any artist looking for gallery representation to contact us.  We consider every artist that approaches us.

TRR: What are your goals for the coming year?

 

  •  Slow and steady is our mantra.  We know baby steps is the best way to move forward.
  •  We would like to offer more receptions, continue with our BYOC summer lecture series, continue to offer our assistance to non-profits, and expand our framing business.
  •  We want to continue to work on our gallery and be proud of what we have accomplished together as a team.  
  • We want to connect art with other businesses in Northwood.  Merging food, art, fashion and the like will be the best way to ensure positive growth — make each and every day the best day to shop and dine Northwood.

Caren Hackman Talks About Sharing Your Portfolio On-Line

The Rickie Report receives numerous emails and phone calls from readers asking a variety of questions. We’ve invited Caren Hackman, author of “Graphic Design Exposed”, to be a guest columnist to answer some of them.  Today’s topic is on-line resources to share your portfolio.

Caren Hackman says, “There are so many options for you to show your work that I can only scratch the surface in this column. I hope that the list of resources mentioned here will serve as a jumping off point for you to find the best possible way to display your portfolio and extend exposure for your artwork.”

 

“A well-rounded multi-media approach will help your work get seen. Be prepared for publicity opportunities by using a combination of print and web media. Your print arsenal should include a business card, printed samples of work, a CV and/or personal statement. The web arsenal should include samples of work, CV, personal statement, email blast capability and regular interaction with at least one social media outlet.”

“Having a website that showcases your work is essential. Content management solutions such as wordpress offer the advantage of having a customized website that can be easily updated. For artists who find the task of building their own site intimidating there are many free online portfolio sites.  Check out this list taken from design instruct.com (http://designinstruct.com/roundups/free-online-portfolio/).

Being able to send out mass emails, be they media releases or invitations to openings, should always be done using an email client. Never, never, never send an email to multiple recipients from your personal email account. Protect the privacy of intended email recipients and protect yourself from being categorized as a SPAM sender by using bulk email programs. Many of these programs are free or low cost and easy-to-use.  A few that you might like to research are mailchimp.comconstantcontact.comstreamsend.com and madmimi.com.”

 

“Blogging and social media sites such as Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and Pinterest are avenues for artists to help collectors keep current on their work.  If working all social media sites seems a little daunting try concentrating on developing a following on just one or two of the sites. Consider using a feed program to automatically send updates from a blog to your favorite social media outlets.”
