“City Within Reach” by Catherine Chen

Catherine Chen was selected to receive the NAWA Florida Scholarship in memory of Rita Schwartz. Lacey Van Reeth, Dean of Visual Arts at Dreyfoos School of the Arts says, “Catherine is an insatiable learner and creator who lacks the paralyzing fear of failure; complacency and idleness are what Catherine views as failure.” The ten images Catherine submitted are part of her “The Electronic City” portfolio. The Digital with Pen and Acrylic artwork addresses the digital world crossing with the real world.

Zoe Elakman focuses on the exploration of wearable sculpture created from a mix of materials. In addition to creating avant-garde fashions, Zoe expressed the mental and physical effects of chemotherapy in a series titled Lymphoma 1,2,3C, 3D to honor her father who was diagnosed with cancer last year. In his recommendation letter, Peter J. Stodolak, Digital Media Department Dean at Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, told us that Zoe has passionately photographed the dance performances at our school for the last three years and is a bright, independent, and highly motivated artist

Samantha Vassor’s “Wavelength”

Samantha Vassor creates surreal environments that influence the viewers’ perception while integrating political and social discussion to spark community awareness and change. Scott Armetta, Painting, Design and Critical Thinking Teacher at Dreyfoos School of the Arts, says, “Samantha’s work has a rare combination of an original, personal vision that can be appreciated by a very wide audience. Her intelligence and creativity are clearly shown in her pieces.” He adds, “That she has volunteered her time at the VA Medical Center and in Haiti helps illustrate her thoughtful kindness.”
