Please join us Monday, April 1st at 4:00 PM (Eastern) to continue to discuss the state of the visual art industry in South Florida, and brainstorm ways to better meet the needs of its stakeholders. We are delighted to welcome panelists including Rickie Leiter, publisher of The Rickie Report; Elayna Toby Singer, artist and Palm Beach County Art in Public Places administrator; and Neil Capozzi, chair of the Arts Council of Martin County, owner of Stuart Art Supply & Studio, and board member of Martin Artisans Guild.

 

 

The Thriving Art Exchange brings together the art world’s various players to engage in constructive dialogue, structured brainstorms, and honest debates about the future of the industry, locally, regionally, and nationally. The ultimate goal is to foster positive transformation and build a vibrant community that serves all its members.

Debut of The Thriving Art Exchange:

 

 

On January 31st, we kicked off three days of art-business talk in south Florida with a reception at Claire and Jack Rosen’s CJR Fine Arts & Frame gallery in Royal Palm Beach. The event marked the debut of CHF’s Thriving Art Exchange, which brings together leading voices from all facets of the art world to foster dialogue in the industry—both in person and online. In this time of upheaval, we’re encouraging collaboration and helping to build an art industry where everyone can thrive.

The following morning marked the start of our Ft. Lauderdale Art-Business Conference at ArtServe, co-hosted by the Broward County Cultural Division and sponsored by Wells Fargo. The event drew an impressive and inspiring bunch of artists! South Florida’s arts community is in savvy and passionate hands. Our interactive workshops are designed to be their own kind of Thriving Art Exchange, fostering dialogue and collaboration. We provided these artists with a strong foundation for growing their businesses, and they in turn shared their stories and offered us terrific suggestions that we’ll be incorporating into future conferences and CHF curricula.

Smack in the middle of the workshops, four leaders from the local arts community graciously shared their expertise in our Roundtable Q&A: Ilene Adams, marketing expert, graphic designer, and artist; Deborah Bigeleisen, painter and former owner of a global textile print-design company; Janeen Mason, artist, curator, author, illustrator, speaker, and arts advocate; and Rickie Leiter, publisher of The Rickie Report (which covers southeastern Florida’s visual-art scene) and guest of honor at our Thriving Art Exchange Reception. These amazing women led a spirited discussion that covered a lot of ground, including how to find public art and grant opportunities; getting involved with south Florida’s local gallery scene; and making art fairs work for you. Ultimately, participants learned that art-business success requires engaging with people in honest and meaningful ways. It’s not about sales but rather true connections.

 

 

Daniel DiGriz, Education Director at CHF tells The Rickie Report, “The single most important statistical predictor of life expectancy is that you’re alive. The longer you’re alive, the longer you’re going to live. It’s funny, but it underscores the incredible power of inertia”.

GLEN GENTELE

Glen Gentele is the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Orlando Museum of Art, one of central Florida’s major cultural institutions. He previously served as the President of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art at a time of positive change and growth for the city. Prior to that, Gentele held a joint appointment as Director of Laumeier Sculpture Park & Museum, Saint Louis, Missouri—a 105-acre open-air museum focused on cutting-edge art—and as the Aronson Endowed Professor for Modern and Contemporary Art, at University of Missouri, Saint Louis. Earlier, he served as the Head of Collections Management, and Curator of Exhibitions, at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Gentele has taught courses in contemporary art ranging from environmental perspectives, installation art, the body in art, to graduate courses in museum practice and studio art. He has organized numerous museum solo and group exhibitions, served on advisory boards, engages as a mentor, and believes that art museums are places of ideas that advance intellectual discourse and our understanding of the human condition. He brings over 20-years of experience in museum administration, art, contemporary sculpture, fundraising, education and community engagement. Gentele received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland, the oldest continuously degree granting art school in the United States; and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida.

JAYAPRAKASH JOGHEE BOJAN 

Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan is a Singapore based National Geographic Award winning nature photographer. He likes to create awareness through his story telling images, His pictures have been featured in several publications including National Geographic, BBC and others internationally. He was also featured in BBC world news recently about his passion for nature photography and stories around his award wining pictures. He is also the brand ambassador for Orang-utan Alliance an NGO promoting Palm oil-free products and supporting grassroots conservation projects affected by non sustainable palm oil.  He was named National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2017 for his image “Face to Face in a River in Borneo”.

Rickie Leiter has always been fascinated by the creative process.   A former art consultant in her native Massachusetts, her instinct to connect with creatives in her new home led her to found The Rickie Report in 2011.  While its focus is the visual art scene in Southeast Florida, she sees personal inspiration in nature, as well as the performing arts.  

Rickie’s mission is to help emerging artists achieve meaningful careers and to guide professional artists in finding their niches.  With a world-wide readership, The Rickie Report brings visual artists and art lovers/art patrons together.  For her, these relationships are the bonds that create a well-educated and well-rounded community.

Rickie’s own creative process over the years has included fiber art, one-of-a-kind wearable art necklaces, and mosaics.  In addition to having earned an MSW, Rickie has served as a long-time volunteer in national and international non-profits, providing her with a solid on-the-ground education for marketing, communication and leadership training.  She and her husband, Jeff, publish The Rickie Report while enjoying the cultural bounties around them.    Contact Rickie@TheRickieReport.com

ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2018

You are invited to enter the 6th annual ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest.  This global, juried, online art contest aims to focus attention on the plight of endangered and threatened species/habitats.  The challenge is to interpret or reflect ENDANGERED through either:

  • Celebration of the beauty of endangered/threatened species/habitats
  • Illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats

 

Categories for entry:

  • Fine Art (including sculpture, jewelry and wearable art) 

 

  • Fine Art Photography (digital manipulation accepted)

 

  • Young Artists (birthdays on or after October 1st, 1999)

We encourage creativity in interpretation and communication of the theme.

For Fine Art and Fine Art Photography categories enter 1 or 2 artworks accompanied by a donation of $35 that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes. There is no limit on the number of entries you may make. Cash prizes totaling $3,250 will be awarded in both categories.

Books As Aesthetic Objects

Arthur and Mata Jaffe donated their collection of books as aesthetic objects, built for over 50 years, to FAU in 1998. Rather than being the end of something, that donation was an inspired beginning, garnering an enthusiastic group of loyal supporters that grows with each passing year. Arthur was a graduate of Penn State University and was a partner in Jaffe Department Stores (Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania) before he and Mata moved to Boca Raton in the 1980s. Mata died in 2001, soon after the Jaffe Collection opened, but Arthur continued to build the collection until his death in 2015––a task that Director John Cutrone continues to this day.

There is great breadth to this collection. It encompasses not just artists’ books and limited editions, but also books that just appealed to the collecting sensibilities of the Jaffes. As such, there is much here that would be found in traditional libraries.

BOOK ARTS 101: Vernal

Class Limit: 18 (you must register ahead of time!)

Become a book artist for a day through this three and a half hour immersion in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. We’ll begin with a screening of a 7-minute video that will introduce you to Arthur Jaffe and the Jaffe Center for Book Arts and the amazing collection of artists’ books that is at its core. We’ll follow this with an in-depth viewing of some of the artists’ books in the collection––books that will entertain, inspire, and astound. And since spring is in the air, we’ll be sure to bring a few appropriately vernal books into the mix. Expect a little springtide story or two, as well, from the instructor’s cache of Convivio Dispatches from Lake Worth: perhaps the tale of the fearful ushers at St. Bernard’s and the April Fool’s Day paper cup tower at Minnie’s Diner.

 

 

 

After a leisurely break for coffee and tea and treats, we’ll move on to the JCBA Letterpress Studio, where each participant will print a sheet of paper from type set by hand from JCBA’s collection of historic wood type. These sheets will be the covers for the books we’ll make, a brief history of the book arts that we’ll bind by hand in the Single Signature Pamphlet stitch, a simple bookbinding technique that you can use again and again in your own book projects. You’ll go home with a book you made yourself––one that you can read as sleep calls later that night, as you reflect on the new outlook on books (and maybe even life) that you’ve found earlier in the day at JCBA. “For there is great joy in knowing how to do things.” All levels.

 

 

 

Instructor:

John Cutrone is Director of the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. He is a graduate of the MFA in the Book Arts Program a the University of Alabama. Aside from his work at JCBA, he is also a writer and a partner in Lake Worth’s Convivio Bookworks, a book arts studio specializing in limited edition letterpress printed books and broadsides (www.conviviobookworks.com). He is the author of the Convivio Book of Days blog, which explores the quirkier side of seasonal traditions, encouraging us to live the ceremony of each day (www.conviviobookworks.com/blog).

Rickie Leiter creates one of a kind necklaces and earrings that are distinctive.  She uses found objects, antique and vintage finds and unusual beads to create her designs. Rickie says, “the beads ‘speak to me’ and I often have no preconceived design until I start working with a focal component, look at all of my beads and then begin. There are times when I will take  things apart and start over again because the final product has to feel right”. Tammy Frand is originally from Long Island, New York. She resides in South Florida with her husband. Tammy has been an exhibited artist in and around Palm Beach County and has been showcased for her unique blend of materials. Tammy uses a ceramic tile coaster and/or trivet as an alternative to flat stock prints of her work creating a more functional use of art. Single and/or multiple tiles are framed in wood collected from local to Florida lobster traps. She also uses materials such as aluminum, wood and acrylic. Tammy shares, “As an artist, I aim to create pieces that appeal to a wide variety of audiences. I use digital imagery to generate work in a multitude of colors, sizes and mediums. Molly’s House is the dream project of a young girl named Molly Sharkey. At 12, she was diagnosed with chronic myelocytic leukemia. For the next 6 years Molly and her family traveled the US to find treatment for her rare type of leukemia. In some cities they were lucky to find a Ronald McDonald House where the family could stay and be close to Molly in the hospital. In other cities there was nowhere convenient for the family to stay.

 

 

 

This experience prompted Molly’s dream of building a house in her home town, Stuart, Florida, and make it available to any family who had a loved one being treated for critical care at Martin Medical Center. Molly died in May of 1992 at age 18,  Since then, her family and friends raised funds to build her dream house.  Since 1996, Molly’s House has provided a warm and caring environment for patients and families in a medical crisis. For over 20 years, Molly’s House has provided a home away from home to almost 20,000 people while they or a loved one were receiving medical treatment. Our Adopt a Family program subsidizes families who are unable to make a donation toward their accommodations. Molly’s House is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for our guests. We are staffed by volunteers and a night manager staff, a housekeeper, an operations manager, and a CEO.

As “Season” Slows Down, What Happens To Our Local “Art Scene”? Hint: It Doesn’t Stop!

Less traffic on the road and less waiting for dining reservations is a sure sign that “season” is winding down. What happens to the “art scene”, which has had you trying to find a way to see three opening receptions on the same date for the past few months?  This Rickie Report article looks at the situation and shares some thoughts for artists AND art lovers!

As “Season” slows down:

  • Galleries still exhibit

  • Arts organizations continue to program

  • Museums remain open

  • Classes To Learn Art Techniques are being taught 

  • Original Art and Handmade Fine Crafts Are Still Available!

 

A Word To Art Lovers and Art Patrons:

 

Stop by galleries and art exhibits in “off season”.

They’ll be less crowded with visitors – and you’ll have a chance to linger!

This is a terrific time to hone your own art skills, learn a new technique or make a creative play date with friends!

Sharing Some Thoughts With Artists:

 

NOW is a good time for artists who have been scurrying to meet too many overlapping deadlines for the past six months to organize themselves!

Calls For Entries To Artists continue to appear and now is the time to prepare for the annual events for next “season” 

 

Business Cards:  

It is time to revisit the wording, font size or photos on them.

Do you have enough cards to get you through the next 12 months? (NO ONE wants to run out in the middle of their busy time…Do it now)!

I make notes on business card ( galleries, exhibits, or organizations I’ll recommend the artist connect with; what is exceptional about their artwork)…

So, consider this before choosing shiny paper and having too many words/photos on your business cards.

 

Artwork:

Staying organized is one of the hardest parts of returning to your studio after an exhibit or show and putting everything away.

Staying organized for the next event is KEY!

Check your written files to make sure they are up to date.

Mark pieces “SOLD” from your inventory (it makes paying taxes easier for next year).

Is a piece of artwork missing?  Find it now, before the exhibitor or gallery takes possession of it.  (Read the fine print whenever you enter to see what their policy is for work that is left)

 

Wear And Tear:

Bringing artwork of any kind to exhibits, shows, and galleries produces wear and tear.
Check all frames for nicks and marks that need repair.
Check mats and glass to be sure everything is in proper position and in good condition.
Check all hanging devices.

Inventory:

Update your inventory list.

Take a moment for a mental inventory.

Are you happy with what you are creating?

Is it time to try a new technique that you just haven’t had time for?

Now is a perfect time to take a short-term class or workshop!

Schedule some networking time with other artists.

Talk about how this “season” has been for you. Sharing insights can be helpful, if you don’t get into a round of grousing. If something didn’t “work”, now you have time to reflect on what you can control – how can you react and plan differently?

 

Outline your business goals – YES! If you are selling your artwork, you are “in business”!

Look at a 2018 Calendar:

Start by marking the dates of all exhibit and show deadlines you are applying to in RED.

NOW: Mark the dates of those acceptance announcements and drop offs in BLUE.

The State Of Art After “Season”

The Rickie Report has been writing articles about artists, art shows, art exhibits and contests for seven days a week, usually twice a day since September.  Art lovers and Art Patrons, can be reassured that art events continue to happen in Southeast Florida after “season” ends! Classes and exhibits are bountiful. Now is a good moment for Artists to consider the “business” of art.  We may not publish an article every day through the summer, but there are still events on our interactive Calendar of Events that you won’t want to miss.  

 

 

 

“Season” is over….

Artists keep on creating.  

Galleries still exhibit.

Arts organizations continue to program.  

Museums remain open.

There is less traffic.

Classes To Learn Art Techniques are being taught .

 It is easier to get a reservation for dinner.
