Delray Gets It Right! Join In Celebrating Delray Beach “Plein Fun Fest”!

Delray Beach Gets It Right!  Despite the recent trend of banning painters from capturing the local scenes on the street in cities such as St. Augustine, Winter Park, and Barcelona, Spain, the city of Delray Beach is actively supporting plein air painters!  Delray Beach understands the difference between hucksters bothering tourists in exchange for a few coins for entertainment and the artistic endeavors of artists who are capturing their town’s history in valuable works. The Rickie Report urges everyone to join in “Plein Air Fun Fest” on February 19th-21st.   On Friday, February 19th, plein air artists are welcome to stop by the tent in Old School Square for art critiques.  On Saturday, February 20th, come and watch the artists as they paint every day scenes and bring more emphasis to the “ordinary”.  Everything will be for sale at 5pm! On Sunday, February 21st, a new generation of plein air painters take center stage with mentors Ralph Papa and members of Plein Air Palm Beach (PAPB).  Here are the details and some sneak peeks! No wonder that Delray Beach has twice won the all American City Award, and was recently named by the US News and World Report “the most fun small city” in America. This city gets it right!

PLEIN FUN FEST WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Friday, February 19th: Paint-out & Critique

There will be a Paint-out with Critique for those Artists who want to join in the FUN but not interested in competition. There is a charge of $20 which includes hospitality suite. Because of the popularity of Plein Air Palm Beach’s 1st & 3rd Tuesday paint-out with critique that is run by Manny Jomok we decided to make it part of Plein Fun Fest.

Registered Artists will meet at Old School Square at 9 AM and decide where to paint. Critique leaders will be available to offer assistance to those who are new to plein air. This Plein Air Paint-out allows artists the opportunity to enjoy not only painting but sharing their creativity with the public.

To the viewers, this art form can be very exciting because it invites them into the creative process: the sight, sound, and even smell of the artists’ world. One of the best parts of plein air painting is the congeniality of artists.

At Noon the artists will meet again at Old School Square Field House for an Artist Hospitality Suite. From there we will break into groups of no more than 10 for a shared art critique.

Night Vision and Fluorescent Techniques

by Serafima Sokolov

Serafima Sokolov has developed a unique painting style which she calls “Night Vision”.  Her paintings reflect modern issues such as war, equal rights and theocracy.  Her newest efforts include a series about the Great Depression.

Even though her paintings depict struggle, they are actually lessons in survival, not defeat.  They are about the strength of the human condition. With her parents, Serafima immigrated to the United States just prior to the fall of the former Soviet Union. She has seen a different side to life.

Graduating from FAU, Serafima successfully developed a career in art, primarily working in oils and acrylics.  She enjoys doing murals which can be seen locally while her artwork has attracted nationwide attention.

About The Faculty:

ELI CEDRONE began her career in Bermuda at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising. She teaches workshops nationally and in Bermuda, California and Italy. She has always been influenced by the power of images to express ideas and emotions and believes painting is a process of discovery and decision making where disparate elements pull together until the image is clearly expressed. She works primarily in oils and is drawn to the human form, where figures exist both in representational and painterly worlds. She describes her style as Contemporary Impressionism.

SALLY COOPER has been painting all her life and began actively pursuing her creative talents in the late eighties.  In 1990 she was awarded an annual Art Award from Broward Community College.  In the mid 90’s she moved from detailed representational work and began to seek the abstract.  By 2000 image reference was left behind and her style evolved into explosions of color, markings and movement.  Her work has been included in numerous regional and national competitive exhibitions receiving awards in most.  She is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society.  In 2005 her painting “Life Force II” received Honorable Mention in Watercolor Magic Magazine’s national competition.

RALPH PAPA teaches drawing and painting at his Delray studio and at the Creative Arts School. He is a member of the Garrison Art Center, the Delray Art League, Past President of the Artists’ Guild of the Boca Museum and co-founder of Plein Air Painters of Palm Beach. His paintings range from studio works composed of real and imagined themes to figurative, portraits and plein air paintings. His works are in public and private collections in the U.S. and Canada.

“Entrance to Suni Sands” by Ted Matz

Situated on the south shore of the Jupiter Inlet, the residents of Suni Sands enjoy views of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, the oldest existing structure in Palm Beach County. Home to senior citizens, veterans and native Floridians, this community was carefully built upon sacred Native American ground. The coastline is ripe with manatee, sea turtles, seagrass and local fishing boats. The famed Sperry Boathouse along the shore has hosted decades of community coastal activities.

Ted Matz, the Chair of Painting and Drawing at the Lighthouse ArtCenter said, “It was such a pleasure coordinating this group of plein air artists who produced a wonderful body of work that documents our local history, recording the past and present for the future to see. As part of the School of Art’s commitment to bring you the best in plein air painting, the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s 3rd Annual Plein Air Festival, March 10-13, 2016, will bring together the finest plein air painters in the country. We look forward to sharing all of these extraordinary plein air art experiences with the public.”
