Curator, Rolando Chang Barrero presents a fine art exhibition with our “Future in Focus” at the Box Gallery in West Palm Beach, FL.  The artworks of Tal Danino and Juan Bernal will explore CRISPR, ethics, remediation, adaptation, and the possible re-introduction of eugenics in our future. The public is invited to the Opening Preview on Saturday, February 26, 2022, with a VIP Reception on Wednesday, March 12, 2022 and a roundtable discussion TBA.  The exhibit is available through March 30, 2022. F R E E       T I C K E T S:

Tal Danino, whose research and work explores the emerging field of synthetic biology, focusing on engineering bacteria gene circuits to create novel behaviors that have biomedical applications.  The interaction of microbes and tumors is a major target of his work, where DNA sequences and synthetic biology approaches are used to program bacteria as diagnostics and therapeutics in cancer. Danino also brings this science outside the laboratory as a TED Fellow and through various science-art projects.

Danino creates visual art involving bacteria and cells and encompassing various themes, often exploring the relationship of humans to microorganisms. His works have gained significant attention and have been featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic, and Wired magazine. He has collaborated with artists such as Vik Muniz in the Colonies series, where he developed a photolithography based printing process to create intricate patterns out of both bacterial and cancer cells. Also in collaboration with Vik Muniz and created by Bernardaud was the Petri collection, a set of porcelain dinner plates depicting pathogenic bacteria.Tal has worked with other artists such as Anicka Yi, exploring concepts of biological identity. In Microuniverse, he used artistic processes such as silk screening to display a variety of petri-dish grown bacterial colonies on different color backgrounds to show their wide range of growth morphologies, from rings to fractals.

Juan Bernal, BA. in Architecture Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, Colombia 1976
“My work is about the beauty of Nature and importance of simple things; elements of nature that we usually take for granted, and whose beauty we don’t take time to observe, like a fragment of a leaf, a flower, or the way light is reflected as it strikes a drop of dew. These themes are recreated making emphasis in the geometry of nature’s designs. It is the complexity within the simplicity. The work constitutes an alarm to us all to preserve the environment that we are part of and we are relentlessly destroying, and without which we could not survive…..

Rolando Chang Barrero has established himself as a cultural art leader, founding the Boynton Beach Arts District, co-founder of Art Synergy, the Florida Arts Association, host and founder of Hola Palm Beach the first bilingual art and culture television show in the area. He is the recipient of the Congressional Letter of Commendation and Proclamation for Cultural Leadership.  He serves as curator of The Box Gallery and Compass having received the Best Gallery of 2018 award from the South Florida Gay News.  In the past he has served as Curator/Director of several galleries and currently curates at the Box Gallery in West Palm Beach.  Rolando was recently named as a MUSE Award recipient from the Cultural Council Of Palm Beach County, a prestigious recognition.

Stained Glass art by Marcia Greene

Stained glass artist Marcia Greene is originally from New York City. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts with an emphasis on sculpture and jewelry design from SUNY Albany, NY in 1971. When Marcia began working with glass in 1978, she found it to be the ideal medium for her, as it incorporated the three-dimensional aspect of sculpture with the detail and glitter of jewelry making, and she has made it the focus of her art ever since. Besides utilizing thousands of types of glass, Marcia enhances many pieces with metal accents and embellishments and other media such as geodes, crystals, stones, and shells. Marcia says, for her, “design inspiration is everywhere: nature, real life, photos, [my own] imagination,” and her style can run the gamut from Victorian to modern abstract, making each work a different and fascinating experience.

In addition to being an artist, Marcia is a Registered Nurse Board Certified in Psychiatry and Mental Health and currently works in a local Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facility. Marcia is part of a therapeutic treatment team that encourages and guides the clients with substance abuse and mental health issues to use various artistic mediums to create their own works of art to work through their issues. She believes that art and the act of creating has a healing effect on people and is grateful to be able to use her knowledge and talents to help others.

The “Hidden Turtles” Scavenger Hunt Is Back!

In 2021, we teamed up with Martin County Office of Tourism & Marketing to launch the “Hidden Turtles” scavenger hunt. The goal was to showcase Martin County’s dynamic arts and culture scene while also generating excitement leading up to ArtsFest 2021. PEOPLE LOVED IT! So, we brought back the Hidden Turtles for 2022.  The Hidden Turtles scavenger hunt began on Friday, January 14. In the weeks leading up to ArtsFest, these 50 turtles will be hidden at different stops along the Martin County Arts & Culture Trail. This free, mobile-exclusive trail features a range of award-winning museums, celebrated attractions, cutting-edge exhibits, historic sites, eclectic galleries, and engaging selections from the Martin County Art in Public Places program.

This year, Palm City-based glass artist Dot Galfond of License to Kiln has created a limited edition collection of 50 signed and numbered glass sea turtle sculptures. In total, there are 14 bright blue, 15 chartreuse, 15 dark green, and 6 gold glass sea turtles. While last year’s turtles were available in teal and gold, we have expanded this year’s color selection, drawing inspiration from the hues of the recent Martin Arts rebrand. Residents and visitors alike can sign up to receive the full trail for free and can use the pass to learn more about these local points of interest. To participate in the scavenger hunt, simply explore the featured attractions along the trail—if you find a turtle, it’s yours to keep!

In addition to the juried art show, attendees can watch the popular CHOPPED event showcasing the inventive talents of renowned Treasure Coast chefs and listen to performances by the Indian River Pop Orchestra and Murray Middle School drama and chorus students. “We always aim to surprise and delight guests who atJodytend Artsfest, and this year will be no different,” said Nancy Turrell, CEO of MartinArts Foundation. “ArtsFest is truly an extension of the expansive arts community we have on the Treasure Coast, and we love this opportunity to highlight their accomplishments.”

Our chefs are all former winners of the competition: Mark Mueller, Aldo Ramirez, Jose Peralta, and Erick Grutka. The format is a 11 AM competition with 2 selected to do a final round at 1 PM on Saturday, 2/12

On the visual artist front, a juried art festival with submissions from across the nation will feature top artists in the categories of painting, drawing, mixed-media, photography, ceramics, glass, wood, sculpture, and jewelry are selected according to workmanship, originality, and artistic conception.

Much like a pink spoonbill soaring through the dusky evening twilight, Michelle Held brings with her a splash of vibrancy, a flutter of unique perspective, and the song of nature in its truest form. Born and raised in Maryland, Michelle knew from a young age that she was meant to fly the vast skies of the art world with a palette and paints tucked beneath her eager wings. Michelle is passionate about the morning glow of a waking sun illuminating an observant egret, the conversation between a fisherman and a hungry pelican testing its luck, or the simplistic beauty of a half-peeled clementine, bursting with flavor and juicy color. Her passion and bold strokes come through in her paintings that are unforgettable!

Her success in the art world has come from her winning combination of creative spark and imaginative nature along with her meticulous attention to detail. Often commissioned for custom paintings as well as murals, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and its ecosystems brought her to embrace the natural world through painting from life. From serene, swampy marshes draped in ancient Spanish moss to tiny, rickety oyster towns bursting with rainbow buoys and boats, there is always a sight to behold. Michelle believes that evoking a feeling of light, space, and passion is the key to any successful contemporary painting. Michelle gives attention to composition, design and value and gives credence to a “go with the flow” attitude as well, and lets the painting direct her, instead of imposing her will on it throughout the entire process.

Plein air has set flight to many paint outs, including Easton, Forgotten Coast, Lighthouse ArtCenter, Adirondacks, Sedona to name a few. Achieving many awards throughout this journey, her favorite ones are the artist choice awards. The real victory however, has come with her love of teaching. There were so many who encouraged her, Michelle finds that paying it forward is the best way to fulfill the soul.

Taking a note from the birds she so loves to paint, Michelle approaches painting like flight, letting the swells and surges of the wind carry her and her brushes through those brilliant beautiful skies. Michelle has been passionately working as an artist and business owner for the past 25 years. She lives in Sarasota, FL and currently participates in invitational paint outs and is widely collected throughout the United States. Often commissioned for custom painting as well as murals, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and the natural world has brought her many awards throughout the United States!
