The Wellington Art Society offers two free events!  Stop by the Pop-Up Gallery in Live Studio 360 in The Mall at Wellington Green from March 6-8, 2020. A reception with refreshments will be held on March 7.  On Wednesday, March 11, Rolando Chang Barrero will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting at the Wellington Community Center.  The public is welcome to these free eventsMeet and greet will be followed by a member spotlight and a brief meeting. Rolando’s presentation will be the highlight of the meeting followed by an art raffle. The Wellington Art Society will have a Pop-Up Gallery in Live Studio 360 in The Mall at Wellington Green from March 6-8, 2020. The artists feature original works with exceptional creativity, diverse mediums and innovative techniques. There will be artist demonstrations throughout the two days and evenings.  A People’s Choice Award will be presented at the conclusion of the exhibit. One of the highlights will be the display of twelve large panels with artwork from local elementary, middle school and high school students with the theme of “Freedom”. A donation was given to each school and the art work and awards were chosen by the Great Charity Challenge Sponsors. The Wellington Art Society served as judges for the art work. A reception with refreshments and open to the public will be held on March 7 from 6-8 PM.

The Wellington Art Society will present a demonstration/discussion by well known local artist and entrepreneur Rolando Chang Barrero at their March 11, 2020 meeting.  The meeting will be held at the Wellington Community Center located on Forest Hill Boulevard just south of City Hall.  Meet and greet begins at 6:30 PM followed by a member spotlight and a brief meeting.  The evening will conclude with Rolando’s presentation and an art raffle.

Rolando began his art career with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago where he also received many honors and a coveted Ryerson Traveling Fellowship.  He is an experimental media artist, a visionary, a cultural leader and well known for his “Social Justice” art film.  He moved to Miami Beach in 1980, doing odd jobs but eventually working for Ted Lapidus in Bal Harbor, later relocating to Beverly Hills, CA working for Torie Steele on Rodeo Drive. He eventually moved back to Miami Beach, working with lifelong mentors and opening an art studio.  On the move again he went to Chicago working in the Pilsen Art District doing internships at numerous galleries.

 

Thanks to the Ryerson Fellowship, Rolando was able to visit Cuba with fellow Cuban artists in 1990.  His experience there opened his eyes to exploring the rich art and unique cultures of other countries.  When his money ran out he returned to South Beach and set up an art studio once again.  He began curating exhibitions as Interim Galleries Director for Miami-Dade College system.  Soon he was able to travel and continue exploring cultures and art in Europe, Asia and South America.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rolando underwent treatment for brain cancer for many dark years until he was finally able to return to work just before he moved to Palm Beach County in 2010.  He has established himself as a cultural art leader, founding the Boynton Beach Arts District, co-founder of Art Synergy, the Florida Arts Association, host and founder of Hola Palm Beach the first bilingual art and culture television show in the area. He is the recipient of the Congressional Letter of Commendation and Proclamation for Cultural Leadership.  He serves as curator of The Box Gallery and Compass having received the Best Gallery of 2018 award from the South Florida Gay News.  In the past he has served as Curator/Director of several galleries and currently curates at the Box Gallery in West Palm Beach.  Rolando was recently named as a MUSE Award recipient from the Cultural Council Of Palm Beach County, a prestigious recognition.

The Artists Guild is an auxiliary of the Boca Raton Museum of Art and was established in its current form in 1984 by the Board of Trustees of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The Guild comprises hundreds of members, many of whom exhibit at the Artists Guild Gallery on Federal Highway in Boca Raton, FL.

ARTISTS GUILD HISTORY:

 

In 1950, Boca Raton had a population of less than 1000, with the library acting as the cultural center of the community. Community members began an “Open House,” to exhibit their individual arts and crafts accomplishments. In 1951, the Art Guild of Boca Raton was organized and later incorporated on December 12, 1954.  In 1960, five adjacent lots were purchased on West Palmetto Park Road. Construction began in 1962 and, in the fall of that year, 12 years from it’s founding, the Art Guild dedicated its first home.

 

Because of a pressing need for studio space, due to the growth of its classes, a building committee was created in 1968. On March 29, 1969, the Studio Building was dedicated. Since 1969, the growth of the Art Guild has taken many different directions. The Exhibiting Artists Guild, known as the P.A.G. or Professional Artists Guild, was formed.

 

Artists of the “Guild,” held critiques, presented demonstrations by well-known artists and were invited to exhibit their works in several hotels, corporations and clubs. In 1975, the Center changed its name to Boca Raton Center for the Arts, and 10 years later, the Boca Raton Museum of Art. In a relatively short period of time, the enthusiastic support of a group of community artists led to the foundation of the BRMCA!

 

In 1997, the name was changed to Boca Museum Artist Guild. Membership was opened to the community. Guild membership was divided into two categories: Associate and Exhibiting. Guild activities have significantly contributed to positive public relations for the Museum. The Guild has participated in Boca Festival Days for 16 years; exhibited with Northern Trust Bank at their request; and provided artwork for Boca Raton Community Center, City Hall and Patch Reef Park. For two years, the Guild provided the Art Department of Pine Crest School with exhibits for teaching tools and with member lecturers. For the past three years, the Guild has participated in a joint exhibition project with the students of Boca Raton High School. Several Guild members serve as teachers at the Museum’s Art School. Additionally, Guild artists support the Museum’s Annual Auction with donated artwork and volunteers.

 

In 2000, The Artist Guild moved its exhibition center from Royal Palm Plaza to the Shops at Boca Center. Known as the Images Gallery, it offered Signature Members a first class exhibition space in a popular, commercial center. It proved to be a very positive public relations effort for both the Guild and the BRMCA. Professional artists were drawn to the center, as there was no comparable exhibition space for local artists in the tri-county area.

 

Membership in The Artists Guild doubled between 2000 and 2004. We currently have several hundred members, both artists and lovers of the arts. Increasing art sales produced real year-end contributions from The Artists Guild to the Boca Raton Museum of Art.  The Artists Guild moved to Mizner Park in Boca Raton in April 2005. Between April 2005 and September 2008, the Images Gallery was in three different Mizner Park locations. The Guild lost its space in Mizner Park and The Images Gallery closed at the end of September, 2008.  In October 2008, the Guild secured a new location for its gallery, this time on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. This new gallery, now known as The Artists Guild Gallery, reopened in November, 2008, with participation of over 100 Signature Members of The Artists Guild.

 

In September 2017, the Guild moved back to Boca Raton in a new larger space on Federal Hwy. This new gallery, known as The Artists Guild Gallery, is over 3,000 square feet. It reopened in October, 2017, with participation of over 100 Signature Members.

Make Your Reservations For Florida Watercolor Society Annual Convention And Trade Show

The Florida Watercolor Society will be in Coral Springs this year to celebrate its 46th Annual Exhibition, Convention, and Trade Show. FWS is one of very few organizations of its kind in the country to hold an Annual Convention and Trade Show. The Convention kicks off Thursday evening, September 14th  with a two-hour painting demonstration by Iain Stewart. Many more demos, as well as critiques, raffles, silent auctions, and a Paint-Around are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 15th & 16th. All of these events are included with the $20 registration fee. Other instructors include watercolor artists Bev Jozwiak AWS, NWS and Sue Allen AWS, NWS.  The Trade Show is free and open to the public. The Exhibition judge, artist Iain Stewart AWS, NWS, reviewed nearly 600 entries to select the 100 watermedia paintings that will show from September 9th through November 17th at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs. Iain also selected 35 paintings from the show to travel on to two additional venues. Bonita Springs Center for the Arts will host the first stop, showing November 21st through December 28th. The second stop will be the Gadsden Art Center & Museum in Quincy, FL, from January 12th through March 24th, 2018. Both Traveling Show venues will host a reception on opening night.

 

WORKSHOPS:

 

Two workshops held in conjunction with the 46th Annual Exhibition still have space available. Iain Stewart’s four-day workshop, held September 11th -14th, 9am – 4pm still has a few spots open. Sue Allen NWS, FWS will teach a one-day workshop on September 14th from 9am-4pm. The workshops will be held at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Coral Springs Resort, 11775 Heron Bay Blvd. in Coral Springs.

 

 

FWS is one of very few organizations of its kind in the country to hold an Annual Convention and Trade Show. 4th Annual Plein Air Schedule March 8-12 Offers Many Opportunities To Art Lovers And Artists

The Lighthouse ArtCenter 4th Annual Plein Air Festival takes place March 8 through March 12. Nationally recognized, award-winning artists from around the Country will paint throughout Palm Beach County, depicting scenes from the beaches and natural Florida landscapes to the quickly disappearing old Florida homes and residential areas. Known as “Paint-Outs,” the artists will be visiting seven different outdoor areas to paint the varied landscapes and cityscapes. The public is invited to watch the artists and purchase paintings at the Paint-Out locations. The diverse locations for the paint-outs include Northwood Village in West Palm Beach, Society of the Four Arts and Bethesda by the Sea in Palm Beach, Riverbend Park, Harbourside Place and DuBois Park in Jupiter and Juno Beach Pier in Juno Beach. With over 120 artists from around the country entering the jurying process, the forty one artists that were selected represent the best of the Plein Air genre. They will be competing for $10,000 in cash and prizes. The artists will deliver their paintings each day to the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery for viewing by the general public.

The Lighthouse ArtCenter 4th Annual Plein Air Festival takes place March 8 through March 12. The public is invited to watch the artists and purchase paintings at the Paint-Out locations. The diverse locations for the paint-outs include Northwood Village in West Palm Beach, Society of the Four Arts and Bethesda by the Sea in Palm Beach, Riverbend Park, Harbourside Place and DuBois Park in Jupiter and Juno Beach Pier in Juno Beach. With over 120 artists from around the country entering the jurying process, the forty one artists that were selected represent the best of the Plein Air genre. They will be competing for $10,000 in cash and prizes.  The artists will deliver their paintings each day to the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery for viewing by the general public.

There is a $100 top prize, and four second place prizes given to artists by the PEEPS™ Company. (For those of you who don’t know, PEEPS™ are those little marshmallow candies that used to appear at Easter time, and now appear all year round.) We have a number of equestrian enthusiasts who have been working in our studio, visiting our gallery and asking for works that involve horses. July 7- July 19: “Shoe Fetish/ Foot Fetish” This proved to be last year’s favorite show among our patrons who purchased more works than in any other show of the year . We like adding some levity to the hot summer by introducing the foot theme into our mix. Let’s get some pictures of these works into the gallery a few weeks early so we can get some more TV coverage on this. We want to bring the shoe loving crowds into the gallery to purchase your works. Last year some retired shoe manufacturers came into the gallery to buy.

August 18 to August 30- ” Bread and Roses” in honor of Women’s Equality Day. The title, “Bread and Roses”, came from the 1912 Laurence Mill strike where women fought for their rights, asking for raises for bread, but for roses in their lives as well. This exhibition honors women, their contribution to the world and to art. Just being a woman in the arts (with or without a message) brings honor to the exhibit.

Cats of every shape, color and kind, and their brothers and sisters in the animal kingdom. We will again reach out to all of the animal rescue venues, pet shops and veterinarians as we publicize this event.

October 20-November 1: “Halloween, Freaky” replaces the Annual “Day(s) of the Dead” Lake Worth is now doing “Day of the Dead,” so we thought we would encompass a wider range of the Halloween Scene this year. This event brought purchasing patrons into the gallery long after the exhibit was taken down.

Thursday, November 2- Wednesday, November 15: 2nd Annual Judaic Show. We plan this show to occur over a month before Hanukkah so that works can sell in time for holiday giving. Our annual Holiday Bazaar will include Judaic works, as well. If you create Judaic works of any kind, help us build this show. Last year many congregations began to visit us. We anticipate growing numbers each year.

“Set The Table”

 

 

Friday, November 17 to November 29: “Set The Table” In time for Thanksgiving, this show will feature you interpretation of the theme, on the walls, and table settings with accoutrements in the center of the front gallery. You have a year to come up with product for the tables. We will be advertising his as a “trade” show for small coffee shops and restaurants, as well as for families who want to include tables settings as part of their businesses or homes.

2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar

December 1-January 3 2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar: Limited to 30 Artists (Including those artists in the gallery and studio.) Gift items for the season. This show sold thousands of dollars worth of gifts in 2016.

 

 

 

And for the rest of the season, we will turn the front of the gallery back to the member artists. If you are a 3-D artist , please consider joining the gallery (and/or) our new studio. Members do not pay fees to be a part of our special exhibitions. It is part of the membership. Write for an application and we will forward it to you.

 

 

As you look over our shows, and titles, remember: The works are YOUR interpretation of the topic.

National League Of American Pen Women Fort Lauderdale Branch Announces Call For Art

The Fort Lauderdale Branch of National League of American Pen Women share a Call for Artists for a juried exhibition of all media. The event takes place at the Herb Skolnick Community Center in Pompano Beach, FL.  The public is invited to an Awards Luncheon on Friday, February 10th.  The juror, Lark Keeler, currently serves on the faculty of the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale.  The Rickie Report shares the details and urges the artists to apply – and art patrons to visit the exhibit, which is open February 1st through March 1st.

Since its founding in 1897 by Marian Longfellow O’Donoghue, Henry Longfellow’s niece, the League seeks to create progression and advancement in visual arts, literary work, and musical composition. The Boca Raton Fine Art Show Budding Artist Competition gives young artists 9 to 19 (grades 6-12) a golden opportunity to begin learning the rules of being part of a professional art show and exhibition. It exposes young artists to the opportunity of creating art for a living – doing something they love to do and, most importantly, how to do it. The art show provides an unmatched learning experience, and exposes students to artwork they might not have otherwise seen. Young artists are encouraged to speak with the artists in the show – all professionals – and to ask them questions about participating in art shows as a career.
