The Rickie Report knows that art is all around us – and we just have to stop and notice!  I was checking out what was happening along Colorado Avenue, known as the “artbeart” of Stuart,  and came across a frame shop called The Gilt Complex. Intrigued, I went inside and had a fascinating conversation with Duncan Hurd, the owner.

 

 

TRR:  So, what’s with the name?

Duncan: 

Our business was founded by a gilder and art restorer in New Jersey in 1982. He has a great sense of humor and rather than call his business something like “Ye Olde Frame Shop,” he decided to have a little fun and call it “The Gilt Complex.” We took over after he retired a couple years ago, and we just love the quirkiness of the name. If nothing else, it’s a conversation starter.

TRR:  Tell our readers more about your business.

Duncan: 

The Gilt Complex is a custom framing and art restoration business.  We frame everything from original art painted by the masters to your child’s masterpiece. In our restoration service, we mostly remove dirt and blemishes from the painting’s surface and repair minor damage.  Although we have been known to reline and restore significantly damaged historical works of art. 

 

 

 

TRR:  I’m in love with all your frames!

Duncan: 

Thanks.  We have what we consider to be one of the most diverse collections of frames in the area.  From historical reproduction 22-karat gold leaf finished corner frames to modern unfinished corner frames.  In order to avoid mass confusion, we organize our samples by style, with room between each frame so you can distinguish one from the other.  We have traditional, ornate gold and silver, wood veneer, contemporary and eclectic, and rustic styles, among others.  We even have a bright and colorful Coastal Collection.  

 

 

The thin black liner inside the mat opening on “Blue footed Boobies” by Katie Gianni, heightens the space and distinction between the artwork and the matting. It gives the eye a space to rest and appreciate the artwork, without being too crowded.  This frame further intensifies the feather of the subject matter, while the frame’s corners capture the look of webbed feet.

 

 

 

 

 

TRR:  What’s unique about your business?  What sets you apart?

Duncan: 

Three words: selection, service and smiles!  We have well over 2,000 frame samples in our showroom.  Beyond that, we will never compromise on quality.  We only use acid-free mats and papers, and all our glass is UV protected.  We are very careful about how we handle your art, and we take the time to fit your frame the right way.  That doesn’t mean that everything we do is expensive.  Quite the contrary.  We’re happy to work within any budget, but the quality of our work will be consistent no matter what you pay.  

TRR:  And smiles?

Duncan: 

We have a lot of fun doing what we do.  Our customers often comment about what a happy place this is.  It’s much more rewarding to establish relationships than to squeeze every nickel out of every sale.  So, we talk to you and laugh with you.  Life is too short not to enjoy what you do, and we like to share the fun we have doing it.  Thus, the smiles!

 

 

The dark mat took attention away from the art itself and the orange-toned frame was a distraction.

Now, the artwork is the main focus, bringing the blue from the art piece into the mat lining.  Look at how much brighter this piece seems!

 

 

 

 

TRR:  Who else works with you?

Duncan: 

My wife Pam is an engineer and she does everything in our workshop.  She operates our computerized mat cutter, cuts the glass, assembles the frames and puts it all together.  What I love about her approach is that she spends as much time on all the little things you will never see as she does on what’s in front of you.  Katie Gianni is an accomplished artist who brings that level of creativity to designing the ideal frame for your art, whether it’s an original or a print.  Finding the perfect marriage between the art and the frame is what Katie and I most enjoy.  

 

 

TRR:  You said you’ve been around since 1982, but I didn’t even know you were here.

Duncan: 

For about a dozen years we were tucked away in a strip mall on South Dixie Highway near Port Salerno.  Last year in February we moved the store to Colorado Avenue.  We love, love, love being in downtown Stuart in what is rapidly becoming known as the arts and entertainment district.  Someone recently called it “the artbeat of Stuart.”  More and more people are finding us every day due to our more centralized location.  Just like you did!

 

 

 

 

TRR:  How else can people find you?

Duncan: 

Probably the best place is through the internet.  Our website tells our story pretty well at TheGiltComplex.com.  We are a big supporter of the Arts Council of Martin County and you can see our ad in their magazine, as well as in the Lyric Theatre’s magazine.  One of the great rewards of owning a small business is becoming an integral part of the community.  In addition to the Arts Council, we are active members of the Stuart/Martin Chamber of Commerce.  It’s hard to go anywhere without recognizing someone, and we think that’s wonderful.  

Note the red line incised around the middle of the frame and how this accentuates the outlines in the artwork.  This and the color of the frame itself offer subtle touches that enhance the artwork. 

 

 

 

 

TRR:  What framing advice can you offer our readers?

Duncan: 

An expression I often repeat when choosing a frame is, “What does the art want?”  In other words, what frame will best compliment the art and draw your attention to the painting or print?  The advantage of custom framing is having many options available to you – not only the frames, but also mats, liners and all the other components that go into creating beautiful artwork.  You can almost always find something appropriate within your budget.  But if your decision is driven by price alone, you may not even give yourself the opportunity to consider the best design solution.  

 

 

TRR:  Do you have any concluding thoughts?

Duncan: 

If you surround yourself with art, every day will be filled with joy!

Wellington Art Society Features Jack Rosen And Richard Mauseth of CJR Fine Arts & Frame At March Meeting

The Wellington Art Society will feature member Jack Rosen and Richard Mauseth, Master Framer of CJR Fine Arts & Frame. They will speak about and demonstrate the importance of framing to enhance a piece of art and elevate it to a cherished heirloom. The meeting will be held on March 8, 2017.   The Free meeting is open to all members and guests. A “Meet and Greet” is followed by a member spotlight and brief meeting. Jack was born in the Bronx and took a circuitous route to art beginning with music and rock bands, scuba diving, sales and aircraft mechanics. After meeting his wife, Claire, the two of them worked for a world wide marketing company where he learned how to approach sales.

 

 

 

Eventually he and Claire moved to Florida where he worked at a computer manufacturing parts business. His brother who owned a market research company and was an avid art patron persuaded him to buy signed and numbered prints by Moshe Givati from eBay at $1 apiece. He resold two of them immediately and made a profit! He did this at night, but finally sold his internet business and focused on buying and selling art work. He bought art at auctions and sold it on ebay for a year, always putting his profits back into the business. Over the years he studied and learned more about art and developed an educated eye. Through networking, Jack established relationships with art publishers and began distributing artworks to galleries and dealers. He became the main supplier for Princess Cruise Line art auctions.

 

 

A little over a year ago he and Claire opened CJR Fine Arts and Frame in Royal Palm Beach and began selling directly to the public. Everyone can buy art and have it framed professionally at one location. They frame two and three dimensional objects as well as mirrors and sell one of a kind art pieces of art glass, sculpture, animation art vintage posters, books and sports memorabilia.  Jack and Richard pride themselves on their personalized customer service as their reputation is on the line!

TRR:  We notice three guitars near your desk, in the midst of this  4, 000 square foot magical showroom filled with art and framing.  Tell us about your interest in the arts.

JR:

I was born in the Bronx and raised in New Jersey with a major focus on making music.  I play drums, brass and guitar, still doing gigs with Fat Daddys, a local rock and roll blues band!  We play community events and parties.  Music and scuba diving were my avocations and I just enjoyed being with people.  My brother and I are close and we have always shared an entrepreneurial spirit.

After trying college, I worked in sales, which seemed a natural fit.  In my 20’s, I took a career counseling test which recommended that I focus on aircrafts mechanics…I received a government grant to study at Tetoborough School of Aeronautics and graduated first in my class!  During the first Gulf War, while working for Luca Aerospace, I met Claire. I liked the work but it was not fulfilling.

TRR:  Your journey to the Visual Arts had a circuitous route, involving a computer parts manufacturing company, a computer website hosting farm and new-to-the-scene, E-Bay.  Tell us more.

JR:

It seems like a circuitous route, but it was part of my life journey.  My avocations, specifically scuba diving around the world, led me establish friendships.  Claire  and I worked for a world wide marketing company and my understanding of how to approach sales led to personal growth. Here is a link to one of the articles I wrote many years ago:

When the economy changed, we decided to move to Florida and start over.  While working as Vice President of a computer manufacturing parts business, I also owned a computer server farm, hosting websites at low rates.  My brother owned a market research company and was an avid art patron.  He called me up one day with a proposal:  He saw 50 signed and numbered prints by Moshe Givati selling on E-Bay for $1. each.  It took him an hour to persuade me to buy half while he bought the other half.

I put one of the prints back on E-Bay and sold it for $32.  I sold a second one… (This was when E-Bay had only auctions, not as it is now, with ‘buy it now’ and fixed prices)..  I had made my money back and we still had 48 pieces left!  I figured this would be a good thing to do at night while I kept my day job.  Then I sold the internet company and focused on buying and selling artwork.  Throughout that time, I learned more about the artists and gained a deeper understanding about the art world.  I started to attend Park West Auctions and buying artwork via the auctions and other sellers and I would sell it on E-Bay.  I did this for a full year, always putting my profits back into the business.

I went to Art Miami about 16 years ago and met Israeli art publisher and gallerist, Motti Abramovitz.  Motti’s father had discovered world famous artist, Itzchak Tarkay, and was publishing his as well as other artists’ work.  Motti gave me $100,000. worth of original Tarkay art pieces on consignment and I sold them on E-Bay.  At that point, I began buying works of art by other artists and selling those. My perception of art as a marketable item transformed into a love for art and a real appreciation for the creative process.

TRR:  You’ve gone beyond promoting and selling art. You also publish artwork and sell to other galleries, auction houses and now, to the public. Tell us more about that process.

JR:

Meeting people of all walks of life has allowed me to network , not only building friendships, but building my business.  One of our most popular artists is Ferjo.  I approached his publisher and was given carte blanc to sell his masterful works. At the same time, I established relationships with other publishers and began distributing artworks to other galleries and dealers, while selling some myself.  I became the main supplier to Princess Cruise Lines’ art auctions, national fund raising art auctions, and auctioneers but never had a “public face”.

TRR:  The obvious question is why open a retail operation now?

JR:

We needed to move all of this art out of our house!  Plus, I started publishing some artists myself. After the economic downturn, when many galleries closed, it made sense to Claire and I to sell directly.  People can come directly to the source and can also have pieces of artwork, memorabilia, photos, etc. framed at wholesale pricing.  We still maintain our relationships with galleries, publishers and agents.

TRR:  Most artists dream of being represented by an agent or having their work published and sold internationally.  Tell us more about publishing artwork.

JR:

Over the years, I have developed an educated eye and a better understanding of what will sell.  Out of 100 artists I meet, only 1 might meet the qualifications for a call back.  There are a few questions I ask each artist, if they meet the criteria of creating good and professional work:

  • Do you have a website?
  • Can we have a good business relationship?
  • Are you coachable? ( If I suggest ideas that are more sealable are you willing to try them?)
  • Are your prices reasonable?  (Prices are based on size)
  • Do you have a large body of work?
  • How quickly do you provide artwork once a piece is sold? 

I will make a commitment to purchase monthly inventory in exchange for being their exclusive agent, publisher and marketer.  We publish limited editions as well as prints.

TRR:  There is an abundance of art terminology, which often inhibits the person-on-the-street from approaching galleries or artists.

JR:

I love speaking with different community groups about the many misconceptions of the art industry, because being better informed = a successful, ongoing relationship with a customer!  Some of the topics I speak about:

  • Is a lower number in a limited edition worth more?
  • What is an “Artist Proof”?
  • What is an “original”?
  • What is a “unique”?
  • Will my artwork increase in value/ What will increase in value?
  • What are the differences between a lithograph, serigraph and giclée?
  • How does hand embellishing affect the value of a giclée?
  • How can you tell if artwork is fake?
  • We represent hundreds of artists and are happy to speak about all of them.  We carry a large number of International artists.
