The Boca Raton Museum Art School pursues numerous formal and informal structured activities intended to inspire and train the community in various traditional and experimental creative media techniques. Through the art of teaching, critique, demonstration, and discussion groups large and small, our faculty and students explore what creativity means through guided projects in various studio environments.

It is the school’s direct intention to inspire and expand the practice of creative artistic expression among all age groups and abilities in a multi-disciplinary environment supported and enriched by artistic influences both local and global in reach. Through classroom, gallery, and social activities, the school emphasizes the benefits of studio thinking to inspire our patrons to improve their lives and communities both aesthetically and through the creative thought process.

WHAT’S    NEW    AT    THE    ART    SCHOOL?

Tom Joule eagerly shares the latest news with The Rickie Report about the Art School.  “We announce our September classes and now you may reserve your seat online by using our  “touchless” registration process. Select classes that you are interested in (Painting, Ceramics, etc.), then the specific session you are interested in by clicking the red “register” button beneath the course days and times”.

“Only our September classes are available at this time, as we test our new system live (and welcome all feedback from you as you navigate our new website).  New courses for October and beyond will be added shortly, so stay tuned!  Strict reduced enrollment requirements are being implemented so you may properly distance while in class as well as requiring anyone who enters the building to wear a mask at all times for your own safety and to protect those around you”.

WHAT    IS    REALLY   IMPORTANT?

Tom goes on to say, “It is during times of crisis that it becomes much easier to recognize and prioritize what is most important in our lives. We can see quite clearly that the Art School without students and teachers and classes is simply an empty building. Reserving a spot in an Art class today is the best way that you can become reinvigorated by the community and friends that you have come to love over so many wonderful years and ensure creative and rewarding learning opportunities for new faces and future generations”.

Ikebana

Sogetsu Ikebana is for everyone everywhere. Is is the art of flower arrangement, rooted in tradition, but ever-changing. The Japanese characters of the Sogetsu School (Ryu) represent grass, moon, and stream. Grass grows everywhere, the moon is seen by everyone, a stream is always moving. The art form is a product of skill and creativity using flowers, branches and either conventional or unconventional materials in order to express the beauty and harmony of nature and the imagination and creativity of the designer.

Influenced at an early age by the Italian Renaissance, Marsha began her formal art training in San Fernando, Trinidad where she gained experience with graphite, charcoal and chalks, and subjects such as the human face and figure. In 1992, at the age of 18 began her career in tutoring calligraphy, which she continues today. In 1995, she furthered her art education at Miami Dade College in Florida where she was introduced to sculpting and painting.

 Mandala Art

“Wave” by Marsha Bhagwansingh, Oil on Canvas

Within recent years, Marsha has explored various new materials with which to create her art, including coffee!  She offers classes in the art of coffee painting in Northwood and Lake Park.  She also is influenced by the exploration of the more spiritual side of life and the therapeutic aspects of art. She enjoys painting mandalas for relaxation and healing, sharing this artform in her mandala making classes. Marsha enjoys exploring new mediums and manners of expression, believing that self-expression, imagination, and the will to push beyond the norm are necessary for artistic growth.

“Mandala Peacock” by Marsha Bhagwansingh,  Oil on Canvas

Upcoming programs:

Mandala Art:  Mandalas help activate our own healing abilities for physical and spiritual balance and opens the gateway to our inner potential. They can be used as spiritually transforming and meditative tools. When creating and viewing a mandala, the left side of the brain (responsible for reasoning and problem solving) rests, creating a shift into a relaxed state of inner clam.

“Coffee Flower” by Marsha Bhagwansingh, Coffee on Watercolor Paper

The Art of Coffee Painting:  Centuries ago, when coffee started to be widely used in Europe, artists who had been influenced by the Chinese tradition of painting with tea, began to experiment with coffee as a painting medium. Today, coffee art expressions are created out of something seemingly ordinary, while presenting the delicacy of watercolors with a soothing muted palette and an unmistakable aroma with which to create art.

Calligraphy by Marsha Bhagwansingh

Calligraphy:  The ancient art of Calligraphy is still alive today and has drawn many to its skillful letterform expression of written communication. Calligraphers give writing a visual life with which to impress upon the reader, a more meaningful and eloquent message.

Artwork in the exhibition will be from the classes in various media that the Armory offers: ceramics-wheel throwing and tile making, paper making, painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and welding. Two different classes run weekly for 2-3 hours during each 6-7 week term.  Currently all of the veterans are selected to participate by the VA Medical Center of West Palm Beach.

VA Creative Arts Therapist Sara E. Windrem explains that due to traumas many veterans don’t go to movie theaters and can’t go to the mall because of the crowds. The Armory has given the veterans a new comfort zone. Sara said, “I think people naturally know how to heal with art. Making them feel comfortable in a space and giving them the skills and the opportunity as a starting point is where the real healing and therapy takes place.”

The exhibition reception is Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Exhibition attendees can meet some of the veterans, instructors, and mental health professionals. JANET  ONOFREY

“Ditto” by Janet Onofrey

Janet Onofrey started teaching this summer at the Boca Raton Museum. In the fall she will be teaching painting on Fridays and an evening class on perspective drawing. Janet is a perceptual painter, painting from direct observation. Her paintings capture the specific light and mood of South Florida.

Beginning Drawing With Janet Onofrey

She seeks out the silent spaces of early morning back alleys or quiet suburban neighborhoods. Her paintings were feature in the Cultural Quarterly Magazine last summer after she was awarded the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship.

Still Life Set-Up with Janet Onofrey

Janet is a natural teacher, she loves sharing her technique with students and delights in those moments when the students ‘get it’, when they understand her lessons on drawing and color and put it altogether.  For beginners Janet sets up still-lifes designed for students to learn how color interacts and the pleasure of successfully painting what you see.

For more information on Janet’s artwork visit her website http://www.janetonofrey.com

RENÉE PLEVY

“Racquel” by Renée Plevy

Starting in September, Renée Plevy will be teaching portrait painting using oils. In oil paint you can capture the light and subtleties of skin tone that cannot be achieved with quick drying acrylics. With years of experience teaching, Renée presents a simplified method of block out the form and building up tones that even the absolute beginner feels confident in painting their first portrait.

Renée Plevy is an acclaimed portrait painter that has painted hundreds of commissioned portraits over the past 30 years. Like many accomplished artists, Renée studied with a number of leading figurative painters in New York to glean from each of them in order to develop her own style.

” Countess de Hoernle” by Renée Plevy

She maintained a studio at 41 Union Square and taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City before relocating to South Florida.  In 2012 Renée founded the “Portrait of a Woman” charitable event that honors women community leaders. Renée has painted 23 portraits of the honorees include the Countess de Hoernle.
