AU:  Our Top 5:

Made in St. Lucie & Starving Artists Online auction is our next big initiative.  The Alliance will use all of our resources to encourage patrons to buy local art for the holidays.  The next Cultural Alliance Art Guild Exhibition is planned for early November and we are organizing musical performances in collaboration with Mid Florida Event Center starting in November as well!  In addition, galleries, museums, live music venues, performing arts, nature & science, and festivals are all making plans for the 2020/2021 Season.  Our website  lists specific events and directs you to the relevant information.

TRR: Can you tell us about an easy way to help SLCA fundraise?

AU: YES!

The State of Florida has a multitude of license plate options, which benefit specific non-profit groups, as well as U.S Military Service branches and Education centers.  When you register with the Arts license plate, SLCA gets a portion of the fee!  It is heartening to see the large number of cars sporting these, and when I see one, I feel a kindred spirit is driving and announcing “I Support The Arts”!

TRR:  Your photographs are truly awe inspiring!  How did you get started using photography as a creative medium?

BSG:

I grew up on Long Island, NY into a family that traveled a great deal. While I remember them having cameras (the old Argo which you looked down into the raised hood), it wasn’t until well after both of them had passed that I opened some of their old photo albums and realized that one of my parents, in addition to taking family photos, also took a significant amount of Landscape images. I can’t help but believe that my young impressionable self, saw them taking these photographs and subconsciously followed in their footsteps…

My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic with flashcubes. I remember feeling that those little cubes were so valuable, only getting four flashes per cube. While at the University of Miami I first rented professional Nikonos underwater equipment from Pro, Stephen Frink in Key Largo. He shot for magazines and National Geographic and was an early inspiration. After shooting for a while underwater, I eventually stayed top side and began shooting with Minolta equipment (7000i and 7xi film cameras, usually Fuji Velvia 50 slide film). If you fast-forward, National Geographic has recognized my work on their website.

 

TRR:  How did you transfer to digital cameras and how did you make this into your career?

BSG:

In 2004, the quality of digital cameras had finally matched or overtaken film cameras, so I purchased my first digital camera (a 6.3 mega pixel Canon Digital SLR). Digital was so liberating! I could see the images after I took them and erase what I did not like, saving on hundreds of dollars in film on each trip. While 6.3 mp was not a huge sensor, this camera took some beautiful images, many of which I can still use today. Canon Cameras USA has since licensed an image from me to sell their cameras.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I had always been artistic, drawing since I was very young. So, after submitting a few images to my first photo contest, I was thrilled when I not only was recognized in the contest (twice), but the Editors used my image for a ½ page Ad inside the magazine (no credit, no payment, and the magazine soon folded, but that was the catalyst for me…seeing my work published, I was hooked.  

 

 

I continued to submit what I considered good “stock” photography at the time, for magazines, books and advertising. As a result, I became widely published (interior images, covers, advertisements, travel magazines and books, wildlife, and landscapes). My images were in many of those hard cover books you find in hotels. Digital photography changed the way images were sent, too. Instead of labeling slides and sending them with a delivery memo in a plastic sheet…now image files could simply be sent online – Wow!  That was so much easier and faster!

As time went on, my desire to get more out of my photography grew. I believed that some of my best work could be considered Fine Art”. I wanted to be considered an “Artist,” understanding full well that it is a subjective title. My goal, was to be considered such… by legitimate, well respected people in the industry. I remember visiting the Center for Fine Art Photography in Ft. Collins, CO and saying to the people I was with, that I would be exhibited there. Fast forward, I have since been exhibited there six different times. 

 

TRR:  We tell our readers that artists may live “locally” but many have a national or international presence, such as yourself.  Was there a pivotal moment when you saw your career change?

BSG:

To move my career forward, I attended top-of-the-line Photography Reviews, showing my work to the best in the industry. I chose the toughest critics first, the ones that other photographers avoided for fear that they would be brutally honest, and therefore, brutal. I, on the other hand, wanted just that. I was well past hearing how good my work was from family and friends. I wanted to hear the unvarnished truth from those that were at the top of their game… and their game was the Fine Art Photography world.

Then, it happened! I was attending Portfolio Reviews at Photo Expo Plus in New York City. Epson Printers had a special guest, iconic photographer, Joyce Tenneson. As an artist, it is important to know the Art history in your genre and I knew that she had over 150 exhibitions and numerous Photo Books with iconic portraits of the most famous people in the world. She was selling her latest book at the time, signed for $40 at New York City’s Javits Center/Photo Expo Plus. I stood on line, eagerly waiting my turn. But when it was my turn to have her sign her book, simultaneously, I artfully pushed my book of images in front of her and asked: “what do you think of mine?” Her immediate response was “Beautiful,” then she turned the page and said, “gorgeous”….this was from a world-renowned Artist…about my work. I will never forget that feeling. Pure, unadulterated VALIDATION.

 

 

She didn’t know me… I had just walked up to buy her book… She could have said “nice” or even “very nice” which I would have translated as “OK”. But she said “beautiful,” then “gorgeous”, those were real responses about my work, independent reviews from one of the best in the world…It was like having Michael Jordan tell you that you had a “sweet jumper” (jump shot, for you non-Basketball readers). Once we were done, I proceeded to walk toward the windows of the building and stepped behind the floor to ceiling curtains, …because this 6’0, 200 plus lb. tough guy, literally got weak in the knees for the first (and only) time in my life.  It was the best $40 I’ve ever spent… Joyce is not only one of the most talented artists on the planet, but one of the most generous, and has since placed two of my images into a Gallery Exhibition (in a juried event, not knowing they were mine and has also signed another one of her books to “Barry, a great photographer”)!

TRR:  Tell us more about “Portfolio Reviews” and why they are important to building a career and a body of work ?

BSG:

These are set up like “speed dating” but you bring your portfolio of images instead of your best pick-up lines. I attended portfolio reviews in NYC, Palm Springs, CA, West Palm Beach, FL, and more.  They were reviews by major Gallery owners, curators, and well respected  photographers. Since the day I met Joyce, 9 times out of 10, I didn’t just get a favorable review, but I often “blew them away.” I’ve had some very animated responses to my 17 x 22 Hahnemuhle prints in a clam shell box (the 400 year old Hahnemuhle Paper Company has since used my work to show off their Fine Art paper). Some verbatim examples of Reviewers’ responses were: the Publishers of Photo District News (PDN), the “Bible” of photography (“something I very rarely say at these things, I’m surprised” and “strong body of work”); Chris Pichler, Publisher of the most respected Fine Art Photography books on the planet, Nazraeli Press (Michael Kenna, Lee Friedlander) (“spectacular, the images are stunning”), Chris’s review was my favorite to date.

When he came to my iconic animals, Of the Wild, he got so excited that he started cursing. “Holy S_ _t”, or something along those lines. He asked me to send him two prints and he sent me a box of signed collector’s edition books. The sales manager of the Howard Greenberg Gallery in NYC (he is one of the 10 most influential people in photography), which sells the Masters’ such as Ansel Adams, called my prints “magic”; David Fahey, of the famous Fahey/Klein Gallery (“if I gave him 18 more like my “Niagara,” he would give me a show”); renowned Curator/Collector WM “Bill” Hunt, formerly of the famous NYC Hasted/Hunt Gallery, actually juried “Niagara” into an exhibition in Seattle and Dr. Anthony Bannon, the Director of the Eastman Museum asked to use it in his next book; The King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s personal photographer, Harrison Funk, chose some of my work for a gallery exhibition. The late Hal Gould, (Camera Obscura Gallery in Denver, CO) was a contemporary of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. He told me a story of how Adams and Weston originally couldn’t sell their work for the asking price of $25.00. Their work now sells posthumously for as much as $500,000. Imagine, my work has hung in the gallery with that of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Sebastio Salgado, Ruth Orkin.  Iconic Photographer Robert Farber ,whose first book was with Jackie Kennedy Onassis, came to the Artist Reception at my Solo Exhibition in NYC. When asked why he was there, he stated, “why not, this work is beautiful”. Dr. Sylvia Earle, the foremost expert on Jellyfish on the planet at National Geographic called my Jellyfish “Magnificent.”

TRR:   This is all quite heady stuff!

BSG:

To be very clear, I am extraordinarily grateful for all of the recognition. I don’t take any of it for granted. I worked very hard, traveled many miles on the Road Less Traveled to create the work and with similar effort and fortitude, put it in front of the right people in the industry. I try to create images that capture moments in time, never to be repeated. I seek to capture transitory conditions of light and atmosphere, subtle moments where elements collide to form moody, ethereal and dramatic scenes. Then, with my close-up, intimate portraits of Animals, I confront the dignity, personality and identity of these magnificent creatures to remind the viewer why it is so important to protect them. If that sounds like my artist statement, it is! From that first publication of an animal image (the winning photo contest entry turned 1/2 page ad)…I have since been named in Popular Photography Magazine on their Editors List of Great Wildlife Photographers. From those early publications in travel guides for AAA and others…I have also been named in Popular Photography Magazine on their Editors List of Top Travel Photographers.

 

TRR Where do you go from here?

BSG:

 

So …from that wide eyed kid with a Kodak Instamatic with flash cubes, I have since honed my craft so much that the camera company that I use (Canon Cameras USA) and the Fine Art Paper upon which I print (Hahnemuhle) have utilized my images to exhibit the quality of their products. My images have gone from my childhood bedroom (with a Raquel Welch poster from One Million Years B.C.) in Long Island’s Elmont, NY to have been published throughout the U.S., to as far away as London, England and Brisbane Australia. My work is collected from NYC to Westchester, from Portland, OR, to a yacht in Baton Rouge, LA; Pennsylvania, North Carolina; Stuart, FL, and many others. Ogilvy and Mathers, one of the largest advertising companies in the world, has licensed an image of mine for an entire wall in one of their main offices. Recently, I have sold an image for a large piece of glass in Australia and been recognized by the Houston Center of Photography for images I took of the cruise ships off Miami Beach during the Pandemic.

So far, it has been a very interesting career, but I am always looking to improve, to continue to create  images that move people. Now, again, I begin a new chapter in my photographic career. After having a Portfolio site for more than a decade where people could only email me to buy the work, I am starting a new, sales oriented Gallery site that can bring my work to more people due to new, more robust marketing efforts. And, while I will maintain the original site (www.barrystevengreff.com) and continue to sell my Signed, Limited Edition prints, this new site will offer more affordable Open Edition pieces on Print, Canvas, Metal and Acrylic. Finally, I anticipate that once we regain some normalcy in the word, I will again travel to pristine locations, to capture iconic images and share them with people around the world that care to see what exquisite beauty still exists on the planet. Rickie Leiter has always been fascinated by the creative process. A former art consultant in her native Massachusetts, her instinct to connect with creatives in her new Florida home led her to found The Rickie Report in 2011. This free online publication features artist stories, helpful tips for marketing, a calendar of upcoming art events, and calls to artists/artisans for both juried and non-juried shows. Rickie’s goal is to help artists, galleries, and visual arts-related organizations achieve their potential by connecting with other artists, art lovers, and patrons. Rickie’s mission is to help emerging artists achieve meaningful careers and to guide professional artists in finding their niches. She has juried exhibits, offered Art Marketing Seminars, and been a featured speaker at many art-related events. Rickie is an active member of numerous art coalitions in southeast Florida. She is always looking for a way to connect emerging artists, established artists, art promoters, and art patrons together, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

 

 

 

Rickie earned an MSW and worked as a psychiatric social worker before changing professional paths as an art consultant. While her own creativity includes a successful career as a jewelry artist and a mosaicist, she is open to new knowledge, growth and experiences. Rickie has served as a long-time volunteer in national and international non-profits, providing her with a solid on-the-ground education for marketing, communication and leadership training. She and her husband, Jeff, publish The Rickie Report while enjoying the cultural bounties around them. Being involved with her community is important to Rickie, as she volunteers with the Ft. Pierce Jazz Society and co-chaired a juried art show in PGA Village Verano. She previously worked in Development with Dana Farber Cancer Institute and is a long- standing leader with Hadassah.

The luscious box of chocolates is actually made of resins, plaster of Paris, rigid foam, adhesives, glitter, with Stan’s imagination and much, much more. Slutsky learned how to create these magical masterpieces by a higher power he calls “the art god”. This self-taught 78-year-old artist has been a full time working artist most of his life. Even in high school, he won many arts awards.

Today Slutsky is creating three dimensional mixed media sculptures of food, one of our most basic needs. It is a flashback to earlier days of good feelings, and nostalgia with his vivid memories of childhood days. He creates art that makes us smile and have that same sense of nostalgia. Stan accomplishes this by tasting and eating what he wants to create, which will look like the hyper-realistic chocolate bars, chocolates, ice cream bars, pops, doughnuts, pizza, hamburgers, French fries, sushi and more.  He creates these artworks in his studio, which happens to be in his perfectly organized studio/garage.

What Is Pop Art?

The type of artwork that I create is Pop Art which began in the 1950s. It’s a style of art based on simple, bold images of everyday items, such as candy, ice cream dessert bars, soup cans, painted in bright colors. Pop artists created pictures of consumer product labels and packaging, photos of celebrities, comic strips, and animals. Pop art  in which commonplace objects ( candy, ice cream on a stick, comic strips, soup cans, road signs, and hamburgers) were used as subject matter and were often physically incorporated in the artwork.
The Pop Art movement represented a shift in what artists considered to be important source material. It was a movement which sought to connect fine art with the masses and involved using imagery that ordinary people could recognize and relate to in their life.
 
As the successor of modern art, the contemporary genre includes art produced today and dates back to a single, iconic movement. While Pop Art began in the 1950s and was popularized in the 1960s, several iconic artists today continue to keep it alive through their exciting and widely beloved works and to name a few artists. Keith Haring, Robert Indiana, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Stanford Slutsky, Tom Wesselmann, Jack Newman, Milton Avery, Romero Britto, Chuck Close, Peter Blake, Steve Kaufman, Damien Hirst, Terry Frost, Charles Fazzino, Doug Bloodworth, Yuroz, Wayne Thiebaud, Alexandra Nechita, Dan Meyer, Peter Max, Sol Lewitt, Paul Kostabi, Jeff Koons.  In addition, let’s not forget Banksy,  John Chamberlain,  George Condo, Willem de Kooning, Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, Kaws, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and many others.

Born in 1941 in Pittsburgh, PA. Stanford has created a plethora of artworks in various mediums.  In the summer of 1957, Slutsky drove a Good Humor Ice Cream Truck, where he was known as “Stan the Good Humor Man”.   He moved from his insanely detailed abstract optical illusion works, to his life long journey with food with an emphasis on sweet things. Prior to creating, he tells The Rickie Report, “I must sample the real thing and only then I begin the process to build, construct, sculpt, sand and paint”. Stan has an innate reverence for the things we eat.  He says, “Food brings people together and there is no better way to celebrate life. We take for granted the aesthetically pleasing and seductive look of food. I like to create art that can lure, charm, tease, disarm and surprise”. His sculptures bring viewers to a reminiscent state so that they can communicate with their inner selves in a more honest and direct way – all the way back to their youth. He activates the hunger people have for the things that give them pleasure and forces them to surrender to being nostalgic in a positive way. The sensual nature of his works stimulates basic human needs and desires that generate cravings and passion. He hopes to bring a little wistfulness to recall the sweet things in our lives.  Who is not getting just a little bit hungry while looking at these images?

ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020

This global, juried, online art contest focuses attention on the plight of endangered/threatened species/habitats. The challenge is to interpret or reflect ENDANGERED through either

Celebration of the beauty of endangered or threatened species/habitats

Illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats

Categories for Entry:

Fine Art (including sculpture, jewelry and wearable art) Fine Art Photography (digital manipulation accepted)

Young Artists (birthdays on or after October 1st, 2001). We will accept individual or class/group entries.)

Each entry of a single image must be accompanied by a donation of $25 USD that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes http:// www.CenterForGreatApes.org. Young Artists enter one image accompanied by a donation of $5 USD. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be made.

 

 

Cash prizes totaling $3,250 will be awarded in both Fine Art and Fine Art Photography categories. Cash prizes totaling $500 USD will be awarded in the Young Artists Contest.

Exciting Online Exhibition November 1st – December 31st

Planning an exhibition in the Covid-19 era presents significant issues. It seems clear that resurgence of the virus could possibly force last-minute cancellation or strict social distancing severely limiting visitor numbers. Such a last-minute cancellation would mean that artists would spend money sending work in to an exhibition that might not happen and that would likely have far less visitors. Having taken everything into account we have determined, sadly, that we must cancel the live exhibition this year.

We have developed an exciting virtual exhibition to run from November 1 to December 31, 2020. Prizewinners and Jury scores (and fit with the theme) will get the best positions. We will be able to feature 100 pieces in the virtual 2- month show rather than the 50 we can accommodate in the real-life show. Another great plus is that we will be able to feature EVERY entry as we will reserve an additional 25 places for a “rolling exhibition” so every piece will be featured for at least 5-7 days.

All pieces may be offered for sale (or not depending on preference) and we will be including links to artist websites and bios as well as full details on the piece.

We are planning interesting online events to run during the exhibition.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of all entrants to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest.

VIRTUAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

 

Art4Apes wants to encourage those artists and photographers who are committed to and focused on using their talent to support wildlife and the environment. This program is designed to showcase their work and support their communication with audiences who appreciate their message.

The Virtual Artist in Residence Program is awarded monthly to the artist (or photographer) who has submitted 3 or more entries to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020 and has been selected by the Curatorial Committee as best interpreting the aims of the Contest.

 

The successful Artist will be featured and promoted by Art4Apes for one month and will receive the following opportunities:

 

Weekly social media posts featuring your artwork
You will be featured in our monthly newsletter
We will design an e-flyer for you to send out to clients and contacts We will set up a dedicated page for you on the Art4Apes website

 

o You will have the opportunity to craft a personal message about your art and commitment to wildlife and the environment.

Sogetsu Ikebana is for everyone everywhere. Is is the art of flower arrangement, rooted in tradition, but ever-changing. The Japanese characters of the Sogetsu School (Ryu) represent grass, moon, and stream. Grass grows everywhere, the moon is seen by everyone, a stream is always moving. The art form is a product of skill and creativity using flowers, branches and either conventional or unconventional materials in order to express the beauty and harmony of nature and the imagination and creativity of the designer.

ART SCHOOL SAFETY PROCEDURES

 

We are committed to the health and safety of our students, staff, and volunteers. In consideration of all participating the Boca Museum Art School will follow current guidelines set by the governor of the State of Florida and local authorities.

 

The Art School has created a robust cleaning and sanitizing schedule. Masks will be required for adult instructors, staff, and volunteers. The students will be encouraged to wear masks as well and will be provided. We will adhere to social distancing in the classrooms with a maximum of 10 students per room as well as no rotating between rooms for activities. Each student will have their own set of materials and will not share supplies. Students will wash their hands upon entering the building and will go directly to their classroom. We encourage all students to use the hand sanitizing stations frequently that are placed in each classroom as well as throughout The Art School.

Danny at the Elephant Café in Livingstone Zambia before going into his barn for the night. An example of sustainable eco-tourism and positive wildlife encounters, the Elephant Café houses orphaned elephants who can choose to participate in interactions with humans, with the ability to walk away at any time.

 

 

 

Katie’s love of nature and wildlife is deep-rooted in trips to the local aquarium and tree-climbing as a kid. She holds a B.S. in Animal Science and a Master’s degree in Global Sustainability with a focus on Sustainable Tourism.  An avid SCUBA diver, Katie is also Past-President of the Florida Marine Science Educators Association (FMSEA). Katie lives in Florida.

Zuul, the South American Black Hawk-Eagle, is an ambassador for One World Raptor Conservancy’s educational outreach program, Knightwings Birds of Prey, which frequents renaissance faire circuits.

 

Biodiversity loss is one of the greatest threats the world faces, and if I can inspire someone to care about an endangered animal through a photograph, I consider that a success. A baboon pauses just long enough for me to snap a photo before running off to continue to play with fellow baboons along Victoria Falls in Zambia.

 

 

 

I have been very fortunate to be able to travel to incredible places like Costa Rica, Australia, The Galapagos, and Zambia, where the wildlife practically begs to be photographed. And much of that wildlife is threatened or endangered. I have the privilege to take people with me to these incredible places, to view these beautiful animals, and that’s an amazing feeling.

This global, juried, online art contest focuses attention on the plight of endangered/threatened species/habitats.  The challenge is to interpret or reflect ENDANGERED through either

  • Celebration of the beauty of endangered or threatened species/habitats

  • Illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats

Each entry of a single image must be accompanied by a donation of $25 USD that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes http://www.CenterForGreatApes.org.  Young Artists enter one image accompanied by a donation of $5 USD.  There is no limit on the number of entries that may be made.

Covid-19 Impact on Exhibition

Planning an exhibition in the Covid-19 era presents significant issues.  It seems clear that resurgence of the virus could possibly force last-minute cancellation or strict social distancing severely limiting visitor numbers.  Such a last minute cancellation would mean that artists would spend money sending work in to an exhibition that might not happen and that would likely have far less visitors.   Having taken everything into account we have determined, sadly, that we must cancel the live exhibition this year.  

We have developed an exciting virtual exhibition to run from November 1 to December 31, 2020.  Jury scores (and fit with the theme) will determine the top placed pieces that will get the best positioning.  We will be able to feature 100 pieces in the virtual 2-month show rather than the 50 we can accommodate in the real-life show.   Another great plus is that we will be able to feature EVERY entry as we will reserve an additional 25 places for a “rolling exhibition” so every piece will be featured for at least 5-7 days.  

All pieces may be offered for sale (or not depending on preference) and we will be including links to artist websites and bios as well as full details on the piece.  

We are planning interesting online events to run during the exhibition.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of all entrants to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest.

Please note:  Entries made after May 31st are not refundable should the physical exhibition not take place.  Entries made before May 31st will be refunded providing the artist notifies Lindsey@art4apes by June 30th.

VIRTUAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

 

 

Art4Apes wants to encourage those artists and photographers who are committed to and focused on using their talent to support wildlife and the environment. This program is designed to showcase their work and support their communication with audiences who appreciate their message.  

The Virtual Artist in Residence Program is awarded monthly to the artist (or photographer) who has submitted 3 or more entries to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020 and has been selected by the Curatorial Committee as best interpreting the aims of the Contest.

The successful Artist will be featured and promoted by Art4Apes for one month and will receive the following opportunities:

  • Weekly social media posts featuring your artwork
  • You will be featured in our monthly newsletter
  • We will design an e-flyer for you to send out to clients and contacts
  • We will set up a dedicated page for you on the Art4Apes website 
    • You will have the opportunity to craft a personal message about your art and commitment to wildlife and the environment.  
    • We will include your full bio and artist statement
    • We will include a virtual gallery of up to 10 pieces of your work
    • We will issue news updates featuring your current work, exhibitions, awards, direction of new work etc.
    • We will feature your work in an article in The Rickie Report – South Florida’s most influential online arts report.

Palm Room In Stuart Features “Art In Isolation” An Exhibition of The Martin Artisans Guild. Opening Reception Wednesday, September 2 Includes 2D and 3D artworks

The Martin Artisans Guild announces the “Summer Salon” in the Palm Room. The public is welcome to the Opening Reception on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. “Storm Surge King Tide” by Jane Baldridge

 

I have had a fascination, maybe an obsession, with water for as long as I remember. I prefer to be in it, if not in than on and failing that let me stare at it. Watching my childhood sand castles fall to the continued impertinent rolling in of waves and tide captivated me. It was but a miniature version of what happens all around the globe.  I grew up in a small Texas fishing village that was underwater at the hint of a tropical storm, from there I moved to a North Carolina coastal fishing village that went under water with the lunar cycles. Now, much of the coastal areas of the planet have reason to watch their own erosion, subsidence and the rising tides reshape their world. I believe that those people who do not go out on the ocean and witness it’s power and beauty may not understand what happens with the rushing water borne on a storm. Currents, tides and runoff change the land, scouring some here, depositing some there. It can be beautiful or terrifying. This can manifest into the magic of an ox-bow forming in a river or a beach house undermined and falling into the ocean.

My artwork celebrates the things that make me happy.  While my subject matter does vary, I am greatly influenced by my love of color, animals, and nature.  I have always lived close to the sea, so water and the color blue seem to be a part of me and often make it onto my canvas. When I get an idea for a painting and I can’t stop thinking about it, I know it’s time to get to work.  Often it’s these obsessive moments that lead to the best work.  The most rewarding feeling is seeing a smile on the face of someone viewing my work and nothing compares to the satisfaction of having someone bring home a piece of my work. Hopefully, my artwork makes you happy too!

“Don’t Let Someone Dim Your Light Just Because it Shines In Their Eyes” by Charlie Cote

 

 

Cheryl Cote’ (pronounced “koh-TAY”) is a prolific, contemporary artist who lost her right eye to cancer when she was only six months old.  In 2010, Cheryl also lost a significant portion of central vision in her remaining eye to a condition known as retinal edema.  This condition prevents Cheryl from driving and reading written text requires a magnifying glass.  Cheryl is currently under the care of a well-known retinal oncologist in Miami.  She has appointments every three weeks to undergo extensive diagnostics and have an injection into her eye to preserve her vision.  Despite Cheryl’s visual impairment she recently found a way to return to her passion for art.  Cheryl hopes her artwork will bring joy to those who view it and that it encourages others struggling to overcome their own challenges in life.

Jewelry often defines the personality and style of a person.  Jewelry By Whiticar offers you many options to explore your own “look.”.  What do you like to wear?  Are you more conservative, or do you walk on the wild side?  When you look at different selections, what catches your eye? Laura Kay is a native Floridian.  She grew up in Stuart, Florida, in a boating family.  Majoring in mathematics led to a career of teaching high school math.  After retiring, she became interested in learning sign language, and she interpreted at the Treasure Coast Deaf Church.  A traveling adventure led to an interest in designing and making jewelry.  Recently she discovered sailing (growing up was all about power boats) and is a member of two sailing clubs!! There are just not enough hours in the day!!

James J. DeMartis (1926 – 1996) was an American painter of the post-World War II generation who explored a wide variety of styles and media; he is best known for his abstract expressionist works. DeMartis’ late style between the 1980s and 1990s has been characterized as “a blend of romantic realism and abstract expressionism. Landscapes, figures, still lifes and abstract works dominate his subject matter. The paint is applied in a lush impasto and lyric flowing line.”

Dot Galfond is a contemporary fused glass artist who resides in Palm City, Florida. Since childhood she has had her hands in some sort of art project; from silversmithing to stage design and construction in high school to computer graphic design and photography. Her love of glass began in 1992 with a stained glass class which eventually led her to her true artistic passion – fused glass. She loves the technological challenge and the complexity of the medium. Heating glass to its molten form; the look of fluid, moving glass. This flowing movement is evident in her body of work.

For Lynn Morgan, creating art is an integral part of her philosophy of being consciously aware of the world around her.  Lynn has been creating art all of her life.  Until her retirement from the corporate world, art was one of her hobbies, but it was the only hobby that she never tired of.  She knew that when she retired, she would reinvent herself as an artist, and that’s what she did.  By attending classes and workshops, she learned techniques that have evolved over the years from realistic renderings to a much more abstract style.  Lynn loves to travel the world and is considered quite the adventurer by her friends.  Her works are inspired by the sights and sounds of her travels to various parts of the world.

“Mable” by Billie Jo Thompson

 

 

Billie is an award winning artist who was born and educated in Canada. Billie earned a diploma in fine arts at Central Technical College in Toronto majoring in 3-D. She studied at Emily Carr University in Vancouver. While raising a family, Billie continued to paint and participated in many solo and group shows and garnered a number of awards. Billie, an accomplished mural artist, also completed a number of commissions for both corporate and private clients.  In 2010 Billie became a paint coordinator in the film industry, creating the wonderful scenic worlds of notable films including “The Magicians”, “Big Eyes”, “Continuum”, “The Confirmation” and many others. Billie also painted commissioned pieces featured in two Tim Burton films, “Big Eyes” and “Miss Peregrines Home for peculiar Children”.  Billie currently splits her time between Vancouver Canada and Jensen Beach, FL. Billie’s current inspiration is the spirit of the ocean, the skies and the natural beauty of the tropics.

Since my youth in Michigan and Colorado and subsequent travels, I have filled my senses with the rawness, beauty and power of our natural world. I was always outdoors near water and in woods. My first eleven years in Alaska, I lived in the wilderness where I raised my children. I touched the face of Mother Nature while keeping my hand intact. I learned to abide by nature’s rules or suffer the consequences.

My fascination, respect and understanding of wild animal and bird behavior deepened. I observed how each species acts within its family group, and has predictable behavior with other species because they, too, abide by nature’s rules.

I am deeply saddened so many magnificent species are endangered and die prematurely on our watch. This moved me to paint rare blue herons, egrets, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and eagles, followed by a series of polar bears, snow leopards, cheetahs, and hummingbirds with their protective goddesses.

As a lifelong artist my work evolves and yet contains elements I discovered 40 years ago. I used to be rigorous about working with one medium at a time; be it gouache, acrylic, oil, ink, scratchboard, watercolor or colored pencils. Currently I explore mixed mediums pushing each to and occasionally over the limit.   Removing this restriction gifts me with new knowledge, deep creative joy, freedom and ease.

In Japan I was exposed to Sumi Calligraphy and the subtle colors used by Japanese artists.  I was intrigued then and now by the harmony of their minimalism.  In Italy and France I saw the reflective beauty of gold leaf in early icons and medieval paintings and the charcoal and terracotta under painting of the Renaissance painters.

 

In my latest Southwest Series I use graphite, or Sumi ink and charcoal, and 23K gold leaf on a sculpted background to celebrate the energetic habits of wild mustangs, elks, swans, Arabian horses, bobcats, coyote, deer, egrets, red tailed hawks, owls, quail, ravens, raccoons and wolves. ​

Bud’s Inspiration

 

Animals and conservation are important to me for several reasons, I have lived in Alaska, in the past, for over 22 years. Eleven of those years, I lived in the wilderness. I got to observe wild animals in their natural habitat. I got to see the changes of seasons happen before my eyes; Long summers with 24 hours of sunshine. Being “dog tired” at 4am because I forgot to go to bed.  Short crisp Fall days happened with a rapidly decreasing sun each successive day. Rain and snow flurries putting a real urgency in having everything necessary done before you were wintered in.  If you were not prepared for winter, you would not be allowed to see another spring (Mother Nature’s Rule). 

Winter was a quiet time except for the sound of some trees “cracking” when their sap froze.

A mournful howl of a hungry wolf. Coyotes verbally keeping in touch with their hunting parties. Howling winds and blizzards.  Everything was bathed in indigo blue.

I got to live as a free human animal. I got to build a shelter, store food, raise offspring, defend my turf.  It was good to be at the top of earth’s food chain.

All living creatures require our respect, for their being here, and having their place here, and it is our responsibility “as top dog Humans” to care for and to be an advocate at all times for them.

In 2016 I was included in Art4Apes group show that was held in Miami FL.  My wife and I spent a very lovely Basel week at the daily Gallery functions that were provided for the artists’ continuing education on doing the business side of their art. 

The inclusion of my oil painting “Great Egret” was a real honor for me.  Because of being included in ENDANGERED Art4Apes show, my fine art career has flourished more and more each year since then.  I now have three quality art galleries representing my work. In the past two years they have sold 23 paintings between them.

How Can Artists Help?

 

Why do we have Threatened and Endangered species? 

Habitat loss?  Changing climate? Exploitation?  

These are mainly “Top dog human” causes.

We all have some special talent or abilities to be responsible, good tenants of this Earth and to our fellow roommates.

I am an artist.  This is the talent I was given and nurtured. I am capable of producing images that are worth 1000 words now.  I choose to do my part (as a good roommate) to show many of our planet’s diverse creatures, in their free state of being, so that maybe those that see my images will get the picture on what it needs to be, not what it is right now.

All pieces may be offered for sale (or not depending on preference) and we will be including links to artist websites and bios as well as full details on the piece.  

We are planning interesting online events to run during the exhibition.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of all entrants to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest.

 

Please note:  Entries made after May 31st are not refundable should the physical exhibition not take place.  Entries made before May 31st will be refunded providing the artist notifies Lindsey@art4apes by June 30th.

VIRTUAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

 

Art4Apes wants to encourage those artists and photographers who are committed to and focused on using their talent to support wildlife and the environment. This program is designed to showcase their work and support their communication with audiences who appreciate their message.  

The Virtual Artist in Residence Program is awarded monthly to the artist (or photographer) who has submitted 3 or more entries to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020 and has been selected by the Curatorial Committee as best interpreting the aims of the Contest.

The successful Artist will be featured and promoted by Art4Apes for one month and will receive the following opportunities:

  • Weekly social media posts featuring your artwork
  • You will be featured in our monthly newsletter
  • We will design an eflyer for you to send out to clients and contacts
  • We will set up a dedicated page for you on the Art4Apes website 
    • You will have the opportunity to craft a personal message about your art and commitment to wildlife and the environment.  
    • We will include your full bio and artist statement
    • We will include a virtual gallery of up to 10 pieces of your work
    • We will issue news updates featuring your current work, exhibitions, awards, direction of new work etc.
    • We will feature your work in an article in The Rickie Report – South Florida’s most influential online arts report. 
    • We will offer up to 5 pieces of work for sale on our online website (price to include a 30% donation to the Center for Great Apes. 

We regret that we cannot offer this to Young Artists at the moment.  

Artists can only be featured once a year.
