“Florida Faces & Places” Photography Exhibit At Center For Creative Education Focuses On Every Day Life Of Florida Residents-Opening Reception July 26

The Sallie & Berton Korman Gallery at the Center for Creative Education presents “Florida: Faces & Places”. The Opening Reception on Friday, July 26 includes a special film presentation, “Florida: Where I’m From”.  This photography exhibit focuses on how local, Florida residents spend each day of their lives.  While a global view relates Florida to beaches, theme parks, and other sunshine baked tourist destinations, these photographs explain what life is truly like for Florida locals.  The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

Mission:

The Center for Creative Education’s mission is to empower our students to grow academically, creatively and socially through arts-based education.

Vision:

CCE envisions a world where each child has the opportunity to learn and grow in the way that meets their needs, and allows them to reach their full potential as citizens and contributors to society.

History:

In the early 1990’s a group of leaders at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach became concerned about the trend to cut back on arts education in schools. Visual arts, dance and music programs were being slashed to balance budgets. The Council commissioned a study, funded in part by the MacArthur Foundation and the Chastain Charitable Foundation, to find a way to help fill the void.

“Untitled” by Sarah Sherman

In 1994 that county-wide study led to the creation of the nonprofit, Center for Creative Education. Its mission was to train teachers how to bring the arts back into schools, by integrating art into other classroom studies. This “Arts Integration” is still the basis for what we do today. For more than two decades CCE has been partnering with schools and after-school sites in Palm Beach County to provide quality, creative educational opportunities, using the arts as the foundation.

“Shoes” by Isabel Saad

The Center:

Surprisingly, the Center for Creative Education’s first office was an un-used exam room at Good Samaritan Hospital. These creative accommodations were courtesy of the chairman of the committee that created CCE, Dr. Robert Brodner, a neurosurgeon who practices at the hospital.

Today, thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have our own beautiful Center in Northwood Village in West Palm Beach. The building was a roller rink back in the 1950’s and 60’s, so it is once again a place to delight children! The Center features an art gallery, classrooms, meeting rooms and is home to our administrative offices. Construction is currently underway on two art studios

“Unconditionally Dogs” Works By Skip Hartzell Opens At Arthouse 429 December 10

ARTHOUSE429 invites you to “Unconditionally Dogs” by artist, Skip Hartzell. The Opening Reception takes place on Thursday, December 10th.  Don’t go expecting dog portraits!  His renditions are of familiar imagery, often drawn from memory. In a series of large works on paper, Hartzell employs his intuitive sense of spirited compositions as he builds up layers of Flashe (a vinyl-based professional grade matte paint) and graphite to create the drawing and then he fills in the blanks. Hartzell’s sculptures are just as spirited and intuitively created.  Skip is a longtime supporter of no-kill animal rescues and has been a dedicated sponsor of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. During opening night, Hartzell has generously offered to donate specially selected dog sculptures to anyone that donates a minimum of $250 to Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Additionally, a generous portion of all sales of his other work will be donated to the Ranch. The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

“Bigger Muse” by Skip Hartzell

Described by art critic Bruce Helander as “This gifted painter’s delightful new works are inventive depictions of man’s best friend, Hartzell channels his passion for canines into a must-see body of work. These dogs far transcend their chosen form through truly impressive style and technique. The passion of the artist and the love of dogs in unlimited configurations are joined to make a fascinating presentation of pictures with an obvious aristocratic appearance and a recognizable common denominator.”

“Expecting” by Skip Hartzell

Hartzell’s work is definitely not dog portraits; they are renditions of familiar imagery, often times drawn from memory. In a series of large works on paper, Hartzell employs his intuitive sense of spirited compositions as he builds up layers of Flashe (a vinyl-based professional grade matte paint) and graphite to create the drawing and then he more or less fills in the blanks. In other works, notably his sculptural arrangements, Hartzell has developed a successful formula of papier-mâché mix coated with aqua resin, and often supported with a fusion of diluted cement and an inside wire armature that takes on an abstract shape.

“Dogs are always in the moment”. Hartzell said. “Although nothing in life has held my attention or has been more fascinating to me than dogs, my art is about more than that. My work is about form, movement, color and texture. The dogs are a recognizable image that permits me to explore my emotions, passions and sentiments. Making art for me is intuitive; it is very much like walking my dogs. I am always excited and waiting to see where the dogs want to go.”

The Rickie Report brings you the unfolding story of transition and change in Northwood Village’s Art Scene. Smykla will be continuing the current exhibition at OSGS Gallery (Northwood Village) until October 31st. Currently OSGS is exhibiting 17 Artists from within and around Palm Beach County.  OSGS became a driving force along with the galleries in the Village to start and continue a free ArtWalk open to the public the 2nd Saturday of every month and supported the community and other merchants by being an active participant in the monthly Art Promenades and Friday Night Strolls through their tenure.  The Rickie Report shares the details and the sentiments of everyone involved:  This continues to be a journey of sharing art  and artists with the community.  Change can bring new opportunities! Grand Opening of OSGS

As of October 31 (yes, Halloween) OSGS (Ortiz-Smykla|Gallery-Studio) Works of Art and Custom Framing located in Northwood Village will be closing its doors. We have had quite an incredible run and have been witness to some wonderful artists and art. In the short time we have been open to exhibiting works of art and offering framing we have exhibited and represented over 50 artists and numerous works of art. OSGS has hosted receptions for both established and emerging artists. We have hosted a Virtual Auction for The Place of Hope and through the Collaborations and Mixed Media Event last year we supported the Center for Creative Education and their goal to educate children through the arts.

It’s a move that unknowingly began in March, 2015, as Jonathon (OSGS Gallery) produced ‘Collaborations and Mixed Mediums’ the charitable fine art exhibition at Center for Creative Education (CCE). That group exhibition was a huge success and now the CCE has extended a full-time position to Jonathon as Gallery and Events Manager to build a thriving events calendar in and around the CCE’s Marjorie S. Fisher Gallery at Center for Creative Education.

“Thank you goes to all of the artists who so graciously agreed to exhibit with us, the merchants of Northwood Village, Ilene Adams for her marketing expertise and, it goes without saying, Rickie and Jeff Leiter of the Rickie Report”.

“We are not going away, simply moving upward and in new directions. Jonathon can be found at The Center for Creative Education (Northwood Village) as their new Gallery and Events Manager (Marjorie S. Fisher Gallery) beginning October 1 and I (Evelyn) will be going into my second retirement and choosing to use my talents volunteering as needed in the arts community and as needs arise in my own backyard in Palm Beach Gardens/Jupiter/Juno areas”.

Marjorie S. Fisher Gallery and Exhibition Space

Jonathon is creating an active exhibition schedule for the Marjorie S. Fisher Gallery at Center for Creative Education. These exhibits will look to include local artists, national artists and programming that will benefit the mission of CCE and the local arts community. Open calls to artists will arise and Jonathon is hoping to reconnect with many of the artists OSGS represented and new faces to create successful exhibitions.
