On January 31st, we kicked off three days of art-business talk in south Florida with a reception at Claire and Jack Rosen’s CJR Fine Arts & Frame gallery in Royal Palm Beach. The event marked the debut of CHF’s Thriving Art Exchange, which brings together leading voices from all facets of the art world to foster dialogue in the industry—both in person and online. In this time of upheaval, we’re encouraging collaboration and helping to build an art industry where everyone can thrive.

The following morning marked the start of our Ft. Lauderdale Art-Business Conference at ArtServe, co-hosted by the Broward County Cultural Division and sponsored by Wells Fargo. The event drew an impressive and inspiring bunch of artists! South Florida’s arts community is in savvy and passionate hands. Our interactive workshops are designed to be their own kind of Thriving Art Exchange, fostering dialogue and collaboration. We provided these artists with a strong foundation for growing their businesses, and they in turn shared their stories and offered us terrific suggestions that we’ll be incorporating into future conferences and CHF curricula.

Smack in the middle of the workshops, four leaders from the local arts community graciously shared their expertise in our Roundtable Q&A: Ilene Adams, marketing expert, graphic designer, and artist; Deborah Bigeleisen, painter and former owner of a global textile print-design company; Janeen Mason, artist, curator, author, illustrator, speaker, and arts advocate; and Rickie Leiter, publisher of The Rickie Report (which covers southeastern Florida’s visual-art scene) and guest of honor at our Thriving Art Exchange Reception. These amazing women led a spirited discussion that covered a lot of ground, including how to find public art and grant opportunities; getting involved with south Florida’s local gallery scene; and making art fairs work for you. Ultimately, participants learned that art-business success requires engaging with people in honest and meaningful ways. It’s not about sales but rather true connections.

John R. Math Discusses “Online Art Galleries” As a Marketing Tool And Provides Artists Exposure To A World Wide Audience

Math of Light Space & Time Online Gallery to share information about different types of online art galleries.  John is a Florida landscape and wetlands fine art photographer as well as a well respected business person in the art world. Since 2006, his Gallery has conducted monthly themed art competitions and art exhibitions for new and emerging artists on a worldwide basis. The gallery was created primarily to help new and emerging artists gain experience in applying for, participating in art competitions and getting solid exposure to the decision makers in the art world. How Online Art Galleries Can Help You Market Your Artwork

In the last 5 years online art galleries have become a popular means for artists to market and sell their art. If an artist is not taking advantage of this platform they are at a very distinct disadvantage in terms of marketing and selling their art. There are several types of online galleries and using them has numerous benefits for the artist.

 

Print on Demand Online Art Galleries:

These type of galleries provide a profile page followed by gallery pages for the artist’s artworks. (They may or may not charge an administrative fee). The gallery acts as a “go between” for the buyer and the artist. They print and ship the artist’s work for the purchaser, which is how the gallery makes their money.

 

Online Art Galleries that Market and Sell Art:

This type of gallery sells the artist’s art and collects a percentage of each sale (much like a brick and mortar gallery when they sell an artist’s artwork). They usually provide the artist with a profile, a storefront and the means to charge and collect from the buyer.
Hopefully, these online art galleries do a lot of marketing and promotion to bring traffic to their website in order to help sell the artist’s art.

 

Online Art Competition Galleries:

For an artist’s work to appear on these sites, the artist will go through a judging or a competition process. The selection of the art is the result of a themed art competition. Online art galleries (in any form) provide artists with very low costs and wide-ranging exhibition opportunities that were not available in the past.  “Brick and Mortar” art galleries have built-in overhead and expenses that make them less able to compete with online art galleries regarding artist entry fees and exhibition costs.

Online galleries offer ease of submitting and managing electronic files versus physically shipping entire works. Using online galleries is both a time-saving and cost-effective alternative for the artist. Matting and framing, shipping, and storing are no longer issues.
The Internet offers broad international exposure to artists who compete, win, and exhibit their artwork. This exposure can be tapped into by both “brick and mortar” and online galleries. Lake Worth Art League Shares Open Call to All Artists For 12 X 12 Exhibition With No Theme And No Jury

The Lake Worth Art League shares an Open Call to Artists for their upcoming  ’12 x12’ Exhibit  from November 14 – December 10th.  This is perfect for the gift-giving season! Artwork will not be juried for exhibition but LWAL Exhibition Rules apply. The Public is invited to the Free Opening reception on Friday November 17th.  Ribbons and Cash Prizes will be awarded.  Watercolor, pastels, and photos are welcome, the outside dimension of frames must measure 12”x12”. LAKE WORTH ART LEAGUE EXHIBITION RULES:

The Lake Worth Art League (LWAL) Gallery strives for a professional presentation of works of art. All artwork must meet the following guidelines to be accepted for any LWAL exhibition in the gallery or at any other location where work is presented by the LWAL:

Artwork must be original in conception and execution. No kits, copies, or giclees/prints. Paintings over photographs are not acceptable unless the photograph is an original photo taken by and embellished by the artist and submitted as “Hand Embellished Photography”. Artwork must be accurately labeled as to medium used. Photographs must be original. Photographs that are digitally enhanced must be submitted as “Digitally Enhanced Photography”.

Artwork containing propaganda will not be accepted. Foul/lewd depiction or text not acceptable. Tasteful nudes will be considered.

All artwork must be for sale. Artwork must remain on exhibition until the end of the show, unless the piece sells and the buyer wants immediate possession after purchase. In this case, the piece sold must be replaced with another work by the artist similar in size. The replacement piece must be provided by the next day.

Artwork may repeat if it has not won a prize, one more time per season.

Once your art has been accepted for exhibition it will be hung by the hanging committee who will take care all pieces are displayed at their best for each exhibition. Once artwork is hung in the show, you may not change its location.

2-D artwork must be clearly labeled on back upper right hand corner with artist’s name, title of the work, medium, price and artist’s phone number. 

Size limited to 12” including frame for wall hung work and weight not over 30 lbs. Frames should be in good condition. Glazing must be plastic and fit the frame. Glazing must not be loose or bulging. Broken, scratched, chipped or dirty glazing not acceptable. Matting must be clean. Paint may not be wet. Only gallery wrapped canvas accepted without frame; edges must be neatly painted and no staples, nails, etc. may be showing.

All 2-D work must be wired for hanging. Wire must be attached using d-rings or screw eyes. Wire must be the correct guage for the weight of the piece and at least 2” below top of frame at center. Ends of wires must be wrapped so that no sharp ends are exposed.

No one may enter or remove any artwork that is not their own work, unless arrangements are made by the artist with the gallery naming a specific person to act for them.

The LWAL takes care to handle all artwork gently, however, the LWAL is not responsible for any damages to or any loss of any piece of art that may occur. Each LWAL member artist has liability only insurance, through their membership.

Artwork that is sold through the gallery requires a 20% commission to the gallery. This amount will be deducted from the artist’s proceeds if the purchase is made directly through the gallery. The gallery is entitled to commission when any work is sold related to or as a result of any LWAL show. Any artist found to not have paid commission to the gallery will lose their LWAL membership and will not be able to show in any future LWAL sponsored exhibition.

Each exhibiting artist must work in the gallery each time they exhibit, or pay a fee so that a replacement worker can be hired.

Once a piece has been accepted for take-in, fees are not refundable. Any artwork left over 15 days after a scheduled show pick-up will be charged a storage fee of $50. Art remaining after 45 days will become the property of the LWAL.

· “Delirium” by Miami artists, Aida Tejada, Josepo and Sandra Garcia-Pardo shows the consequences of obsessive experimentations on their art when looking for accurate definitions of their emotions and dreams, as well as the role of art and its commitment to society. Tejada teaches experimental photography at her studio; Josepo incorporates reclaimed materials, from his work in the construction business, and gives them new life.  Sandra Garcia-Pardo is the 2011 recipient of the Miami-Dade Community and Tourist Development Council Grants Program.

· “The Nature of Women” explores the world outside cities and towns: the kingdoms of animals and plants, the sunsets, mountains and vistas that inspire us as viewed, specifically through the eyes of women. Through Phoenix Marks’ photography and Jen Walls mixed-media work, they challenge the viewer to question: “What does our view of the wild say about our own human nature?” Marks serves as President of the National League of American Pen Women (Fort Lauderdale Branch) and Vice President of the Broward Art Guild; Walls has taught art in North Carolina and will participate this summer in the Artist in Residence program at the Olive Stack Gallery in Ireland.

· “Nature” is an exhibit displaying two artists’ love and perspective on the world we live. Brett Aiton having extensive training with animals, shows his love and respect for the creatures that keep humanity alive in his colorful oil paintings. Cynthia Bebak Inklebarger is an experienced mixed-media artist that paints nature from an abstract lens. Her style ranges from finite detail to colorful representations of the environment. Both of their devotion to the outside is evident in their differing illustrations. Aiton’s admiration of wildlife began in his native Indiana and studies in Veterinary Medicine. He has also written a series of teenage fiction books. Inklebarger has taught art and served as a docent and researcher for a non-profit art institution in Miami.

· “Spectrums of Color” by Tatiana Cast, Terry Arroyo Mulrooney and Carlos Gonzalez, showcases the vision of three artists regarding colors, shapes and light. Each artist with a unique style and perspective, demonstrates the great diversity that exists in the visual arts world. Cast is an art consultant and curator; Mulrooney is involved with the non-profit organization M.U.J.E.R. Florida and has provided families with paintings that replicate portrait photos that she took of children of families seeking support services from M.U.J.E.R.; Many of Gonzalez’ paintings are inspired by South Florida’s vibrant, musical influences.
