The St. Lucie Cultural Alliance continues to transform St. Lucie County public buildings into beautiful galleries with art for sale by members of the Cultural Alliance Art Guild. Everyone is invited to the Grand Opening Reception of “Celebrating Us”, the inaugural juried exhibition at the St. Lucie County Administration Building on Thursday, January  27, 2022.  The abundance of talented artists who live locally and are esteemed nationally and internationally offer their artworks to the public including live demonstrations.  Enjoy food and beverages from True Roots Catering and live music by Joette Giorges and Nico James. Displayed on the 2nd Floor in the St. Lucie County Planning and Development Services Department of the County Administration Building, the grand opening celebration will keep the building open to the public after hours with a wine reception. Hor d’oeuvres are sponsored by True Roots Catering, a member of St. Lucie County’s Sunshine Kitchen. In this state-of-the-art food incubator, chefs, caterers, and food truck operators can hone their culinary skills and build their businesses.

“St. Lucie County is the Cultural Gem of the Treasure Coast,” Alyona Ushe, Cultural Alliance Executive Director, continued. “With an abundance of crazy-talented artists right here in the county, this exhibition will encourage our developers to look at the beautiful work around them as they consider decorations for their new buildings and homes.” Now, developers and builders submitting plans to county officials will have the opportunity to see an array of examples and purchase beautiful pieces to enrich their projects with art made by local St. Lucie County Artists.

Alliance Music Guild Member Joette Giorges, a classical guitarist will perform in the exhibition, while acoustic singer-songwriter Nico James accompanies Alliance Art Guild Members, selling their wares in a pop-up shop. Clark Ogier, an Alliance Art Guild Member, will demonstrate his technique of creating art with programmable robots and geometric code with his “programmable partner,” named “Smaggy”.

The first Art Walk of 2022 is on January 21st, 5 – 8 PM is sure to be the talk of the town with the opening of the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance’s (Cultural Alliance) new exhibition, Provocative, featuring daring themes at the Cultural Alliance Gallery, located on the 3rd Floor of the One Eleven Building in Downtown Fort Pierce. 

 

 

On the 3rd Friday of each month, guests can enjoy shopping, live music and artists in the street as a part of Art Walk. This month, there will be a performance from Joette Giorges, classical guitarist in the Alliance Gallery. Bruce Bernstein’s Saxophone Expressions will perform outside and 2 Gypsies Music, a duo featuring guitar and saxophone by Harry Fager and vocals from Leslie Fager can be enjoyed on 2nd street alongside Opulence, currently being exhibited at the Ohana Group Gallery at 124 2nd Street. 

 

 

The immensely popular Alliance drum circle with Kevin Beatkeeper is held 6 – 7 PM in the parking lot of One Eleven Orange Building. With a limited number of drums available, this activity always fills up with guests, so we encourage participants to register for the Drum Circle and RSVP beforehand at https://artstlucie.org/art-walk.

“Floridian Flavors: Characters, Culture, & Cuisine” is a noteworthy exhibit of juried art quilts that celebrate the rich and varied cultures, clothing, food, holidays, languages, history, and customs of residents, visitors and native-born Floridians. Martin Arts brings members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA), Florida Region to share their creativity at the Court House Cultural Center from January 11 – February 26, 2022.  (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt. CDC guidelines will be followed. (SAQA), Florida Region, have created this collection of juried art quilts that celebrate the rich and varied cultures, clothing, food, holidays, languages, history, and customs of residents, visitors and native-born Floridians. The Sunshine State is one of diversity and inclusion, attracting people from all over the globe and these magnificent fabric masterpieces will reflect their uniqueness and lifestyles.

Alongside an impressive roster of visual artists, the opening night will also feature live musical performances by notable South Florida acts American Sigh and LAVOLA, as well as the highly anticipated performance of Treasure Coast’s own, Sandman Sleeps, who formed during the quarantine of 2020, cultivating a full, energy packed, and dynamic indie/art rock sound while maintaining a sense of rawness and unpredictability in songwriting and delivery.

“It’s really nice to see Court Room Sessions happening again after the pandemic”, said Zack Jones, guitarist of Sandman Sleeps. “It feels like it’s been so long. Martin Arts’ “31st Annual All Florida” Juried Art Show is open NOW through November 20, 2021. The show started as a local juried art show and has grown to encompass all Florida artists! Juror Kirk Ke Wang was impressed by the entries.  A handful of artists will join a virtual panel to discuss their works on Thursday, November 4 with Duncan Hurd of The Gilt Complex moderating.  The entire Free exhibit is being offered in a hybrid manner, both virtual and in-person at the Courthouse Cultural Arts Center in Stuart. Kirk Ke Wang, Juror:

Kirk Ke Wang, Professor of Visual Arts of Eckerd College and a Board Director of the Ringling Museum of Art, is a painter, sculptor, photographer, mixed media artist, as well as an educational software developer. Cheryl Maeder is intuitively linked to everything in the world around her and us. Now is our chance to see a variety of her works which focus on relatedness. She speaks for Mother Nature, as a guide to all of us.  The core of Cheryl Maeder’s work is about “connection”; the connection to the self, each other and to all life forms on this planet.  It is Maeder’s philosophy, that we humans are not only of this world, we are also connected to the broader universe.  It is this concept that permeates throughout her limited edition photographs and video installations…

Born in New Jersey, Cheryl Maeder moved to Zurich, Switzerland in her early 20’s, where she studied photography at the Zurich University of the Arts.  Eight years later, she returned to US and opened her photography studio in San Francisco, where she photographed international advertising and fashion campaigns.  She transitioned from photographing fashion models to photographing real women, to celebrate the beauty of women in all shapes and sizes. In 2005, Maeder relocated her studio to the Miami area and deeply immersed herself into fine art photography and filmmaking.

Cheryl Maeder tells The Rickie Report, ” I am a Fine Art Photographer and Video Installation artist. The core of my work is about “connection”; the innate connection to the self, each other and to all other life forms on this planet.  I have made a career out of creating work that is the opposite of any trends. Maeder goes to to explain, “When the trend in still photography was hyper-definition, I photographed intentionally out of focus and abstract. Through my experimentation with new technologies, and shifting between the mediums, I am creating new opportunities for large scale public art installations.  I began “Super Natural” in March during the Covid19 pandemic. Fusing the natural world with my inner world, I create visuals that are somewhere between reality and the sublime. I create both the photographs and film for this series entirely on location working with the elements of wind and the natural light. The fog of color is created in each setting on location. As the color lifts and fades away, I am reminded of the impermanence of life”.

Maeder’s artworks are in prominent public spaces and permanent museum collections: Frost Museum(Miami) and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. She participated in a group exhibit at the Louvre Museum (Paris), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Rome), Miami New Media Film Festival, Public Art Platform, Art & Technology, “Curated Thesis on Water, Climate Change & Communities” Traveling Group Exhibition (Bogota, Caracas, Valencia, Miami, Santo Domingo, San Nicolas & Rome).  Her works can be found at the Montefiore Medical Center, Permanent Collection, New Rochelle, NY Campus, state-of-the-art new Emergency Department & Radiology Clinic.  She had a Solo Exhibition at Miami International Airport and her artworks have been auctioned by Sothebys NY. She worked with PBS’ Filmmaker Project as a featured Filmmaker, film “PLAY” televised nationally on PBS, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.  “Submerge” a Public Art Video Installation, was seen at the Canvas Outdoor Museum (City of West Palm Beach, FL) and she has exhibited at major art fairs worldwide including Art Miami, Scope NY, Art Toronto, Art London and Art Shanghai. Her photographs are 30 x 45 inches and 40 x 60 inches, limited editions of 10. Video Installations are also limited editions of 10.

While being physically distanced, there is no reason to feel powerless. Negotiations are ongoing in the Senate on what is being called “Phase Three” of the COVID-19 response relief package. As you know, the coronavirus has already had a devastating economic impact on America’s nonprofit arts sector—financial losses to date are estimated to be $3.6 billion. More advocacy is needed and you can help with the click of your computer, a phone call to your Congressional  legislators, or a letter.  The Rickie Report gives you the links and information here.  Please share with others who appreciate, enjoy, and want to support the cultural arts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The U.S. Senate legislation under consideration today has several items we’ve been asking for—your advocacy has been working! For example, there is some funding for the NEA, but it’s not enough. Self-employed artists, creative workers, and nonprofits appear to be included in the Paycheck Protection and Small Business Administration disaster loan provisions, but we need to ensure they are included in the final bill version.

 

More advocacy is needed!

 

 

In order to support the sector at this vital time, request that your members of Congress include the following in the current legislative package currently being negotiated:

• Support $4 billion in COVID-19 relief funding to be administered by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services—House Arts Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) and House STEAM Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) led a letter to House Leadership with this ask, Senate Cultural Caucus Co-Chair Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) did the same in the Senate. Waive matching requirements and general operating support reprogramming for FY2020 grantees, as well as for COVID-19-specific grantmaking;
• Encourage charitable giving by increasing the allowable amount of the proposed $300 above-the-line tax deduction available to taxpayers that do not itemize their returns, and removing AGI limits on allowed deductions for charitable giving;
• Ensure that proposed forgivable SBA disaster relief loans support all arts and culture workers by: specifying that access to forgivable loans is available for self-employed workers, increasing the employer eligibility threshold by applying the 500 employee cap to fulltime employees, and eliminating the employer size cap for nonprofit organizations;
• Support pandemic unemployment benefits for workers ineligible for state unemployment benefits, which will provide essential support for self-employed workers in the arts and culture sector; and
• Ensure arts eligibility for additional forms of disaster relief, such as Community Development Block Grants, education and lifelong learning programs, and health and wellness initiatives.

In a national survey by Americans for the Arts, 91% of responding arts organizations indicated that they have cancelled one or more events. Many arts organizations have closed their doors for months to come. These estimates are based on more than 5,000 respondents to an Americans for the Arts nationwide COVID-19 impact survey, and then further extrapolation of those data nationally using IRS data about nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. The most recent figures show economic losses of $3.6 billion to date, up from $3.2 billion last week. The survey is ongoing, and these figures will be updated regularly. Given that losses documented in the survey have occurred only in the last two months, Americans for the Arts anticipates additional billions in potential revenue losses for the nonprofit arts and culture field.

Photographer Christopher Fay believes recognizing beautiful ART around you constantly is a gift and skill that comes from viewing the world through the Artist’s Eye. The trick is to develop the patience and imagination to recognize it.  From there, each image calls for its own composition.  With the onset of digital photography and many digital photography advancements, new worlds have opened a new age of creating high-quality photographic artwork.  By using various techniques and tools to enhance regular photographs, spectacular results can be achieved in the finished image.

Photographer Hope Kahn uses many different photographic means to capture an image; such as digital cameras, plastic cameras and pinhole cameras. She then applies, a variety of finishing techniques.  Some of the techniques used are historical processes such as Photo Gravure, Cyanotype as well as the use of paper negatives. The common thread in her art is the blending of the realistic into the interpretative – producing a poetic quality to her photographs. Her clients have often called her work “mysterious and otherworldly.”

Photographer Shalini Nopany is known for both black and white and color images of people and places. Her photographs, which radiate with a woman’s sensibility, freeze a moment in time that captures emotions and actions. Her themes have included motion, emotion, and people’s activities in different settings.

 

Curator Bruce Helander

 

 

Curator Bruce Helander is an art critic, arts writer, curator and artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a former White House fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and has won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts. He is one of two 2014 inductees to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, Florida’s most prestigious arts and culture honor (the other is musician Tom Petty).

“Little Red Rising Hood As A Crime Scene” by Jeanne Jaffe

 

 

 

 

 

Jeanne Jaffe is a sculptor, video and installation artist who recently moved to Florida from Philadelphia where she is Professor Emeritus in the Fine Arts Department at the University of the Arts. She is also a visiting artist/professor at Xian Academy of Fine Arts in China each fall and is currently the coordinator of International Projects at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts.

 

 

 

“Supplicant” Part of the T.S. Eliot Installation

 

 

Jaffe’s work is inspired by an interest in anthropology, mythology, and psychology. Her work “explores how identity is formed from early, pre-verbal, bodily experiences through the later influences of language and culture. In installations that re-examine cultural myths and stories, such as “Little Red Riding Hood as a Crime Scene” or “Eulogy for Nikola Tesla”, well known folktales, history, and poetry are re-imagined through a contemporary lens. These multi-sensory environments are composed of sculpture, videos, interactive elements, stop motion animation and sound and supply a context to question and rethink our cultural assumptions.”

Ms. Jaffe is the recipient of fellowship grants from the Gottlieb Foundation for Outstanding Artistic Development, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mid Atlantic/NEA. the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Leeway Foundation, the Independence Foundation, CEVA Foundation, the Virginia A. Groot Foundation, and the Mino Artist Residency in Japan, among others.

 

 

Works by Ms. Jaffe have been exhibited both nationally and internationally at such places as the Seokdang Museum of Art in Korea, the Mino-Washi Akari Museum in Japan, The Royal Scottish Academy of Edinburgh, Scotland, Museum Rijswijk in Holland, London Craft Council Gallery in England, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art Museum in Philadelphia, the Delaware Art Museum, Hillwood Art Museum, and the Michener Art Museum. Her work has been reviewed extensively, including in Art in America, The New York Times, and Sculpture Magazine. She holds a B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art and an M.F.A. from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred.

Jeanne Jaffe will be showing her work locally at an exhibition of artist books and prints at IS Projects in FATVillage, Fort Lauderdale during March and April. She’ll have a solo exhibition of completed work and work in progress at Arts Warehouse in Delray Beach from the end of April through May.
