WITVA March 15, 2012 Meeting

12PM – 2:30PM

SUGAR SAND PARK, 330 South Military Trail, Boca Raton.

Women In The Visual Arts, Inc. College Graduate Scholarship Program : Since 1989 Women in the Visual Arts, Inc. has supported the efforts of women who are in the process of earning a Graduate Degree in Art.  At present, we are supporting talented candidates from Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University, who need help with tuition in order to complete their Masters in Art.
A committee of WITVA members reviews each candidate’s references, qualifications and artist’s statements. The Finalists make an in person presentation of artwork before our members and guests. This presentation takes place at The March General Meeting of Women in the Visual Arts, at SUGAR SAND PARK, 300 South Military Trail, Boca Raton.
You will enjoy seeing what is happening in the world of young artists. After the review of the artwork, the Scholarship Committee determines the award winners.  WITVA also presents each winner with a one-year complementary membership to our organization. This gives each artist opportunities to enter our art exhibitions.  In this way, our graduates continue the WITVA mission to enhance the cultural life of our South Florida community.   All awards are presented to the winners at our Annual Spring Luncheon in April.
Our Chairperson for this program is our own WITVA member, MYRNA RODKIN, who will share some of her own artwork.

Childhood Memories by Myrna Rodkin

Childhood Memories by Myrna Rodkin

From Myrna’s earliest childhood memories, she always had a great love of nature.  While her girlfriends played “house”, she was busy exploring a nearby creek.  It wasn’t unusual for her to bring home tadpoles, salamanders, and crayfish as gifts for her family.  “At the age of six, my mother made me a member of the National Audubon Society’s Children’s Book of the Month club. I was fascinated by each book’s images of birds, insects, animals and flowers and am still maintain my membership in the Audubon Society,”she tells us.

Retiring to Florida in 1994, gave Myrna the opportunity to concentrate on bringing her love of nature and her love of photography together.  As a nature photographer, Myrna feels blessed to be living in South Florida.  The wildlife refuges and National Parks, and botanical gardens abound giving her something new and wondrous to behold and photograph.  Myrna states, “I feel privileged to be even a small part of that experience.  I once read in a fable, “The Little Prince”, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.  What is essential is invisible to the eye.”  “It is my hope that what I have seen through my heart and captured with my camera, becomes visible through your eyes.”

Myrna has taken many classes at the Palm Beach Photographic Center and has studied with such acclaimed nature photographers as Helen Longest Slaughter, Arthur Morris, Darrell Gulin and Pat Gerlach.  Currently, Myrna is a student in Jack Wild’s Master Class at the Delray Beach Art Center.  She has won numerous awards in local juried competitions and has had her work on exhibit in In Focus, Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, American Orchid Society, the 110 Gallery Delray Beach, the Boca Raton Museum of Art All Florida Juried Competition (2003-2004), Crest Theater, Highland Beach Library, The Armory, West Palm Beach and in Sugar Sand Park, Boca Raton. “ The most thrilling moment I have had, Myrna said, “was being asked by the National Wildlife Refuge System to put my image of an Anhinga about to pop a fish in its mouth on their  Facebook page for captioning!” Myrna is a member of the Boca Raton Museum Artists Guild and Women in the Visual Arts, Inc.

He has been a teacher for over twenty years, to both youth and seniors. His students have won national recognition. He has designed interiors, furniture, Fine and costume jewelry, and done set designs for musical theater. At present he has a small mural business and teaches full time during the day.

Michael believes everyone is creative, and can achieve painting and drawing skills with the right direction and philosophy. He never compares one persons skill to another, nor does he try to get an artist to paint in his style, but encourages all to be themselves, express themselves, and above all learn to see the world through the eye of a painter. There are great artists, but not all great artist can be a great teacher.
