“Unconditionally Dogs” Works By Skip Hartzell Opens At Arthouse 429 December 10

ARTHOUSE429 invites you to “Unconditionally Dogs” by artist, Skip Hartzell. The Opening Reception takes place on Thursday, December 10th.  Don’t go expecting dog portraits!  His renditions are of familiar imagery, often drawn from memory. In a series of large works on paper, Hartzell employs his intuitive sense of spirited compositions as he builds up layers of Flashe (a vinyl-based professional grade matte paint) and graphite to create the drawing and then he fills in the blanks. Hartzell’s sculptures are just as spirited and intuitively created.  Skip is a longtime supporter of no-kill animal rescues and has been a dedicated sponsor of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. During opening night, Hartzell has generously offered to donate specially selected dog sculptures to anyone that donates a minimum of $250 to Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Additionally, a generous portion of all sales of his other work will be donated to the Ranch. The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

100% of the sale of selected sculptures & 40% of all other sales of Hartzell’s work will go to Big Dog Ranch Rescue.  Big Dog Ranch Rescue is the largest no-kill dog rescue in the Southeastern United States. Bigger Muse 60x42 Skip Hartzell

“Bigger Muse” by Skip Hartzell

Described by art critic Bruce Helander as “This gifted painter’s delightful new works are inventive depictions of man’s best friend, Hartzell channels his passion for canines into a must-see body of work. These dogs far transcend their chosen form through truly impressive style and technique. The passion of the artist and the love of dogs in unlimited configurations are joined to make a fascinating presentation of pictures with an obvious aristocratic appearance and a recognizable common denominator.”

“Expecting” by Skip Hartzell

Hartzell’s work is definitely not dog portraits; they are renditions of familiar imagery, often times drawn from memory. In a series of large works on paper, Hartzell employs his intuitive sense of spirited compositions as he builds up layers of Flashe (a vinyl-based professional grade matte paint) and graphite to create the drawing and then he more or less fills in the blanks. In other works, notably his sculptural arrangements, Hartzell has developed a successful formula of papier-mâché mix coated with aqua resin, and often supported with a fusion of diluted cement and an inside wire armature that takes on an abstract shape.

Bubba 60x42 Skip Hartzell

“Bubba” by Skip Hartzell

“Dogs are always in the moment”. Hartzell said. “Although nothing in life has held my attention or has been more fascinating to me than dogs, my art is about more than that. My work is about form, movement, color and texture. The dogs are a recognizable image that permits me to explore my emotions, passions and sentiments. Making art for me is intuitive; it is very much like walking my dogs. I am always excited and waiting to see where the dogs want to go.”

Artists will be demonstrating their techniques to further educate the art loving public. The Rickie Report applauds this trend, believing that better informed art lovers become more enthusiastic art patrons. The Student Art Contest participants will also be celebrated! We want to point out that there is no connection between the presenting organization, Artistic Synergy and Art Synergy (ARTWEEK at Art Palm Beach). Jack Busa, of Artistic Synergy sent out a Call to Artists for a unique juried exhibition taking place at the South Florida Fairgrounds. The number of nationally recognized artists who applied is exceptional. Artnado will feature 2D and 3D art, photography, jewelry or whatever combination the creative mind conjures. Jack explains, “‘Synergy’ is supplied with the incorporation and interaction of models, an embellishment room and ambient music”.

Jack tells The Rickie Report, ‘We created ARTNADO realizing that no one can know or predict the complete buying habits of the attendees. Our juried process took into consideration the artists’ work from talent, inspiration and creativity…we did not to classify something as “not art” because it does not fit what “we” expect… Artists need to promote themselves or they will have a limited career. Our goal is to show the artists’ creativity in the most favorable way…and demonstrate their work to appeal to all potential buyers.”

I want to get below the surface of things when I make art.
I’m after something essential – something that moves me.
It all comes from life experience and my understanding of art, past and present. I want to communicate my experience and explore what is possible.
“Creativity takes courage”, said Matisse.
Creativity can take many forms. I am the kind of artist who is willing to work in many ways. I feel the potential of human expression is boundless. It’s all a matter of taking a risk.

The public is invited to the Opening Reception at Bohemïa AG on Saturday, April 18th from 6 – 10 pm.  The SOLO Exhibit features artwork by  Award winning tattoo artist and photographer, Scott White.  He has created a series of photographs which explore tattoos as an art form and expression of identity.  By allowing his portraits to remain anonymous, Scott’s photographs compel the viewer to focus on the intricacies of the artwork itself. This extension of one’s personality through the lens of body art is a testament to self expression!

The opening night reception will also be host to two charities:  Hounds and Heroes program by Awesome Greyhound Adoptions, which trains retired greyhounds to be service dogs for veterans.  And Palm Beach Harvest, a non-profit agency which collects food from grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, and farms and oversees its distribution to various local places of need including homeless shelters, senior centers, churches, and soup kitchens.

Claudia Bloch

Necklace by Claudia Block

Claudia Bloch is an American artist known for her beaded jewelry designs. Born and raised in New York City, Claudia’s work reflects the fusion of cultures and people she was surrounded by in the invigorating city environment. Inspired by the work of Louise Nevelson, not just for her installations themselves, but for her process of walking the city streets at night, finding what others had discarded to use in the making of her own vision.

With that in mind, after Claudia began her designs with the goal of women wearing her pieces, she has recently amplified that idea – to a greater vision of building intriguing installations around the jewelry. Viewers can both enjoy wearing the pieces, as well is exploring the power of the material world and its influences over their identity. Claudia resides in South Florida but travels extensively showing her work in private and public venues.

Meryl Lefkovich

Meryl is a self-taught artist/maker with a degree in art history. She has had past careers as an art consultant, gallery manager, travel consultant and interior designer, all of which, she believes, contribute to her world view in design and concept.  Her serious art career began in 1993 when she began teaching herself how to paint. She has her paintings in a number of corporate and private collections in the Boston area and around the country.

Meryl Lefkovitz' Bracelet

Meryl Lefkovich’s Bracelet

In 2011, Meryl learned how to solder and there was no looking back. Jewelry design and fabrication have become her passion. Her primary influences are flora, fauna and a fascination with Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Meryl Lefkovich's Bracelet

Meryl Lefkovich’s Bracelet

She tells The Rickie Report, “As an art history major, ancient cultures also impact my designs; I love the look of a slightly time-worn patina, as though a long lost piece was newly discovered. Combining raw and organic with delicate and romantic, whimsy, combinations of color and gemstones – all have a place in my designs.”  She starts with a concept; a new interpretation of the natural world, then the metal takes over and informs her how each piece should develop.

Meryl Lefkovich's Earrings and Pendant

Meryl Lefkovich’s Earrings and Pendant

Meryl says, ” the forms and essence of nature, a dewdrop on a leaf, the rustle of leaves in the wind, the twisted scroll of vines and the gnarled knots of trees…these are the moments I want to capture and reflect in my jewelry.”

Elayna Toby Singer

Elayna Toby Singer is drawn to materials that come from the earth and to forms transformed through encounters with the elements. She is attracted to circles. They invite her in, are windows to the beyond; simultaneously open and whole.

Elayna Toby Singer's Bracelet

Elayna Toby Singer’s Bracelet

She tells The Rickie Report, “Connecting one object to the next, both physically and visually, energy and awareness journey between root and crown. The space between reminds us to breathe. Twirling and dancing with the air around us, energy shifts, spirit awakens, transformation occurs. Presented in new contexts, each object’s intrinsic beauty is revealed. Discarded and precious materials – vintage tools, machine parts, manufacturing remnants, garden trimmings, mineral stones and beads from around the world – are combined to create one-of-a-kind artworks.”

No two Elayna Toby Singer pieces are ever the same.  Elayna Toby Singer uses only “cold connections” in creating my assemblage kinetic sculptures and jewelry. No welding or soldering for me. Instead, she uses wrapping and knotting techniques, along with swivels and metal links, to connect one object to another.
