The Florida Highwaymen Are Coming To Lighthouse ArtCenter For Art Exhibit, Sale And Talks
The Lighthouse ArtCenter invites you to an Art Show, Sale and Artists Talk to benefit Martin County Special Needs Training and Lighthouse ArtCenter. Twenty-six of the original Florida Highwaymen painters were inducted into the Florida Artist Hall of Fame in 2004, Florida’s highest cultural honor. Their careers began in the 1950s, before the Civil Rights Movement gained ground. This group of mostly self-taught African-American artists dared to pull themselves out of poverty by painting iconic Florida landscapes and selling their work door to door to Doctors’ offices, beauty salons, and from their cars in parking lots. Lighthouse ArtCenter presents two of the Hall of Fame Original Highwaymen, Issac Knight, Roy McLendon, Sr. and Johnny Stovall Highwayman 27, along with Second Generation Artists, A.J. Brown, Roy McLendon, Jr., Ray McLendon. Selected paintings from Johnny Daniels and John Maynor, both deceased, will also be available. The Rickie Report shares the details about purchasing tickets.
