The Broward Quilt Expo announces a Call For Entries for the Broward Quilt Expo and Airing of The Quilts.  Every two years, volunteers from the East Sunrise Quilts Guild, Southern Stars Quilt Guild, Coral Springs Quilt Guild,  South Florida Modern Quilt Guild, West Broward Quilters Guild, and Quilting in the Pines Guild come together for the Broward Quilt Expo (BQE).  The deadline has been extended until December 7th for entries (open to non-members).  The Rickie Report shares the details of the Call and reminds anyone who loves fabric, textile arts, or sewing to stop by to see these industrious works of art!  The Inaugural Airing Of The Quilts takes place on Sunday, January 27 at the Stranahan House Museum during Ft. Lauderdale Art & Design Week.  The BQE takes place over one week, with workshops, vendors, and quilts from March 4 – 10.

Broward Quilt Expo is proud to announce its inaugural Broward Quilters’ Airing of the Quilts event.  An “airing of the quilts” is a traditional outdoor event in many communities across the United States and around the world. Airings range from simple displays of quilts on clotheslines to “takeovers” of entire towns such as the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, OR.

Stranahan House – Oldest surviving structure in Broward County, is on the National Register of Historic Places. On the Tarpon River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, Frank Stranahan built it in 1901 as a trading post and converted it into a residence for his wife, Ivy, in 2906. Stranahan House Museum

This event is an opportunity for Broward County quilters to bring our work into the community and to celebrate our art. It is a chance to share the unique history of quilting and quilt makers with our visitors. We’ll be displaying quilts on the two covered porches of the house, along the fencing around the house perimeter, and between trees.

Our event is taking place during Fort Lauderdale Art & Design Week (January 19–27, 2019), a result of the desire to unite all of Fort Lauderdale’s arts and cultural institutions in a celebration of everything art and culture throughout the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The ultimate goal in creating this week is to establish Fort Lauderdale as an international cultural destination.

ABOUT BROWARD QUILT EXPO:

Broward Quilt Expo, Inc. is a federally-recognized 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to promote and perpetuate the art of quilting. We are an organizational body governed by volunteers from the member guilds, currently East Sunrise Quilt Guild, Inc., Southern Stars Quilt Guild, Coral Springs Quilters, Inc., West Broward Quilters Guild, Inc., South Florida Modern Quilt Guild, and Quilting in the Pines Guild, Inc. All of our funding comes from public support, including membership fees, gifts and grants, and receipts from events we organize.

Every two years, six quilt guilds in Broward County, Florida, come together to present the Broward Quilt Expo (BQE). It is one of the most exciting and expansive quilt shows in South Florida, and takes place in sunny Fort Lauderdale.

In 2019, our show event is being expanded to cover an entire week!

  • Monday March 4th : Miniature Quilt Auction (evening, free event) at ArtServe
  • Tuesday through Thursday, March 5th to 7th : Workshops at ArtServe
  • Friday March 8th : Awards Gala at ArtServe (evening, ticketed)
  • Saturday and Sunday, March 9th & 10th : Quilt Show and Marketplace at the War Memorial Auditorium.

Over these seven days, thousands of viewers will join us to celebrate the uniquely American art form of quilting.  Whether you want to look at beautiful examples of traditional, modern, or art quilts, if you’d like to buy a quilt, learn how to quilt, attend a lecture, or shop for supplies, BQE has it all!

And BQE is not just for quilters!  In 2019 we will also be welcoming the entire community with many new activities.

  • Children’s activities.
  • Art Challenge for non-quilters!
  • Lounge and relaxation station.
  • Food trucks.
  • Community events before quilt week.
  • Family-friendly tickets.
  • Much more to be announced!

SHOW JUDGE: Maribeth Schmidt

Ms. Schmit has earned numerous ribbons and awards at regional, state, and national competitions. Having won several “Best of Show” awards, her work has exhibited in National and International shows.  Several of Ms. Schmit’s quilts are published in magazines, books, and journals. About the PBCQG:

Do you like to work on projectAprils in your own home? We have directions available for our Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County Welcome Home quilts, and for Project Linus quilts. We also have directions posted for a great name badge holder you can make for your name tag, the PBCQG logo patch, and pin. Or, you can sew interesting items for the Boutique committee as they dream up new items to offer in the Boutique at our Guild meetings or at our shows.

Do you prefer to work in a group? We gather after meetings several times a year for community outreach “sew-ins” where you can cut, press, sort, sew, bind, or quilt projects for veterans, Habitat for Humanity partner families, and other Palm Beach County community services. Additionally, many members gather in small groups around town to work together on community projects. See the list in each month’s newsletter.

Do you like to help children learn about quilt-making? We love helping children (and their parents) learn about and appreciate quilt-making. Our largest project is our Kids’ Corner throughout the seventeen days of the South Florida Fair each year. We have offered different activities over the last 30 years, but all of them involve a way for children – even the young ones – to make something related to quilt-making. Currently, the children use crayons to draw designs on light-colored fabric that we heat-set and make into small Project Linus quilts – often right there at the Fair. Children and parents often stop by later the same day to see the quilt that their block is in. These quilts are distributed to community-based organizations throughout Palm Beach County – many are carried on fire trucks and used to comfort children in crisis situations. The Fair lasts for seventeen days each January and we always need members (and their friends and family) to help with Kid’s Corner and with other tasks such as demonstrating hand-quilting, machine-quilting, and offering opportunities to win the special theme quilt available that year. Get free admission the day you work!

Sign up to work a shift of your choosing at any Fall Guild meeting or by contacting Nancy Ialacci or Donna Jesse. We especially need volunteers to work the evening shifts – that way, you can enjoy the Fair during the less-crowded daytime, have dinner, and then work the booth from 6-10 pm

Another way we help children learn about quilt-making is to conduct special programs, such as the quilt-making class at the Fair’s summer camp in Yesteryear Village. Children, 8-12 learn what life was like in “the old days” and they learn basic sewing and quilting skills.

Do you like to learn new skills? Most Guild meetings include a program, which teaches a quilt-making skill or concept. During the year, we have several workshops with talented local, regional, and national instructors on tradition, modern, and art quilt-making. See the newsletter for the latest information on programs and workshops.

Do you enjoy sharing your quilt-making knowledge with others? Let the Guild vice president or workshop chair know that you are interested in teaching a short program or a long workshop.

Would you like working with our wonderful library of quilt-making books and videos? You can help the library committee catalog new acquisitions, lend and receive the books and videos, or help members find ones related to their quilt-making interests.

Would you enjoy helping with our annual challenge, or the construction of our annual Fair and “opportunity” quilts? Contact the committee chairs and let them know.

How about assembling membership packets? Preparing Birthday Basket fat-quarters? Holding quilts up for display during Show and Tell? Just contact the committee chair – they would love, love, love your help!

And, there is always a lot to do before each meeting. If you find joining a new group a bit awkward, pitching in and working along side someone is an easy way to break the ice. Sign up to be the “Gate Greeter,” from 9:15 – 10 am, and provide wagons for members and guests to use for their heavy items. This way, you get to meet everyone coming into the meeting. Just sign up on the clip-board circulated during each meeting. Join us in the Bink Museum at 8:30 am any meeting day and help set up the tables and chairs and be part of the camaraderie that forms as we work together. Join Us!

Habitat For Humanity New Homeowner’s Quilt, A Gift from PBCQG

Join Us!

"Boba Fett" Quilt by Pat Metcalf

“Boba Fett” Quilt by Pat Metcalf

Patricia Metcalf uses scissors to create beautiful one-of-a-kind quilts to enhance your home. She loved sewing as a child and carried her talent through the years as a quilter. Her fabric choices are inspired by the South Florida lifestyle she so enjoys. Pretty colors of pinks, greens, flamingos and palm trees are carefully cut by hand with scissors. She then places each fabric block in a layout to achieve her finished picture. The quilt blocks are sewn by hand or sewing machine as each stitch is made to perfection with detail and finishing. The results are amazing as each quilt comes to life when completed. She has taken a very old tradition going back hundreds of years and created a very contemporary look. Her art quilts can be hung on a wall to admire or used in a functional way in a bedroom or living area.

Wire Wrapped Gemstone by Pauline Denson

Pauline Denson is a lapidary artist using natural rocks, crystals, gems, and minerals in her jewelry. She learned to identify precious stones and mineral specimens and uses her knowledge as she hunts for various rock pieces to turn into artistic wearable jewelry. She sometimes takes slabs of stone and grinds them into interesting shapes, and then polishes the different gems on finer and fine grits. She especially likes to use agates in her jewelry making.

Handmade Jewelry By Pauline Denson

This is a labor-intensive process which is very satisfying when completed. Pauline uses different wires to complement her natural selection of stones and gems. The wires enhance the vivid colors and markings of each rock. Her selection includes 14-caret gold filled and sterling to copper and brass wirings that she has entwined around the precious rocks.
