The Fort Pierce Art Club shares 3 Calls to Artists for the upcoming “ARToberfest” (Saturday, October 17 – includes a Cookie Contest with Cash Prizes), “Fabulous Flamingos” (Saturday, November 21), and “Magnificent Miniature Masterpieces” (Saturday, December 5).  Artists from St. Lucie County, Martin County, Palm Beach County, Indian River County, and Okeechobee County are welcome to participate.  ART LOVERS: Mark your calendars now – from our sneak peeks, you won’t want to miss the FUN!  The Rickie Report shares the details of each event in this article.  Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County are a hub for art!

The Cookie Contest entry fee will be  four dozen cookies packaged in individual bags of 6 each.  

Supplies for the contest:  cookie bags and display boxes will be provided to contestants at Cool Beans Brew Coffee House on 1115 Delaware Avenue, Fort Pierce, the week before the event. 

The cookies will be for sale and for judging. 

Cash prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. 

Proceeds from the sale will go to support “Art on the Porch”, a free painting session including all supplies, sponsored by the club every Monday morning from 10 am to noon, at Cool Bean Brew Coffee House.

Open to all artists and art students on the Treasure Coast.  Students in Junior High, High School and College are encouraged to participate with the supervision of an art teacher and/or parent.   

FLAMINGO SPECIFICATIONS: 

  1. Open to all artists working in all media.  Original work must be created on flamingos provided by the Fort Pierce Art Club, Inc.  (FPAC).  Other flamingos may be used with approval by the Show’s Curator.
  2. Works will be judged on craftsmanship and use of the flamingo as a lawn ornament/decoration.    
  3. There is no theme requirement for the flamingos.  
  4. This is a non-profit community project.  All flamingos will be for sale to the public and the proceeds will go toward the Fort Pierce Art Club’s Public Art Programs and the Student Scholarship Program.  
  5. No eroticism or graphic violence will be considered.  General patriotic themes are allowed but political party and/or campaign candidate promotion are strictly prohibited.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

Each artist will be asked to give a $5 deposit for the flamingo.  The $5 will be refunded to the artist when the completed Flamingo is returned.  Note:  Students working with a School Art Teacher(s) will be exempt from the deposit, but the teacher will be responsible for the return of the completed or uncompleted flamingo(s) they take.

AWARDS:

The Selection Committee is composed of professional members of the public and the Show Curator who will oversee the judging of the pierces.  The judges will evaluate the work and have the right to reject any piece that might be offensive to the public or of poor construction.  There will 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ribbons for each of two categories:  Students and Adults.  There will also be tons of bragging rights for all.

The proceeds from the flamingo sale will go towards FPAC Art Education Scholarships to be awarded on January 9, 2021 at the Club’s 65th Anniversary party.  The club’s party will be held outside under the oaks from 9:00 am to noon at Cool Beans Brew coffee house.  Scholarships applications for high school and college students to complete will be available at www.fortpierceartclub.org at the end of November 2020.  Winners will be posted on the club’s website above.

 

 

The Fort Pierce Art Club this year has raised $400 for the “Inner Truth Project” and $500 from the July “Filthy Mug” silent auction to aid the Fort Pierce Women’s Club, who provide food for families on Mondays and Fridays.  During March and April, the club distributed wooden birdhouses, paint, and brushes for families to embellish.  The “Bird House” art was then displayed at Cool Beans Brew Coffee House.  Currently, the club is sponsoring “Art on the Porch”, a free painting session including all supplies, every Monday morning at Cool Beans Brew Coffee House. In addition, several club members are painting bike racks for the city of Fort Pierce.

 

 

The Fabulous Flamingos event will be sponsored by Cool Beans Brew Coffee House and The Fort Pierce Art Club, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting artists and the arts through community awareness.

TRR: Can you tell us about an easy way to help SLCA fundraise?

AU: YES!

The State of Florida has a multitude of license plate options, which benefit specific non-profit groups, as well as U.S Military Service branches and Education centers.  When you register with the Arts license plate, SLCA gets a portion of the fee!  It is heartening to see the large number of cars sporting these, and when I see one, I feel a kindred spirit is driving and announcing “I Support The Arts”!

Rickie Leiter has always been fascinated by the creative process. A former art consultant in her native Massachusetts, her instinct to connect with creatives in her new Florida home led her to found The Rickie Report in 2011. This free online publication features artist stories, helpful tips for marketing, a calendar of upcoming art events, and calls to artists/artisans for both juried and non-juried shows. Rickie’s goal is to help artists, galleries, and visual arts-related organizations achieve their potential by connecting with other artists, art lovers, and patrons. Rickie’s mission is to help emerging artists achieve meaningful careers and to guide professional artists in finding their niches. She has juried exhibits, offered Art Marketing Seminars, and been a featured speaker at many art-related events. Rickie is an active member of numerous art coalitions in southeast Florida. She is always looking for a way to connect emerging artists, established artists, art promoters, and art patrons together, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

 

 

 

Rickie earned an MSW and worked as a psychiatric social worker before changing professional paths as an art consultant. While her own creativity includes a successful career as a jewelry artist and a mosaicist, she is open to new knowledge, growth and experiences. Rickie has served as a long-time volunteer in national and international non-profits, providing her with a solid on-the-ground education for marketing, communication and leadership training. She and her husband, Jeff, publish The Rickie Report while enjoying the cultural bounties around them. Being involved with her community is important to Rickie, as she volunteers with the Ft. Pierce Jazz Society and co-chaired a juried art show in PGA Village Verano. The Martin Artisans Guild announces the “Summer Salon” in the Palm Room. The public is welcome to the Opening Reception on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. “Storm Surge King Tide” by Jane Baldridge

 

I have had a fascination, maybe an obsession, with water for as long as I remember. I prefer to be in it, if not in than on and failing that let me stare at it. Watching my childhood sand castles fall to the continued impertinent rolling in of waves and tide captivated me. It was but a miniature version of what happens all around the globe.  I grew up in a small Texas fishing village that was underwater at the hint of a tropical storm, from there I moved to a North Carolina coastal fishing village that went under water with the lunar cycles. Now, much of the coastal areas of the planet have reason to watch their own erosion, subsidence and the rising tides reshape their world. I believe that those people who do not go out on the ocean and witness it’s power and beauty may not understand what happens with the rushing water borne on a storm. Currents, tides and runoff change the land, scouring some here, depositing some there. It can be beautiful or terrifying. This can manifest into the magic of an ox-bow forming in a river or a beach house undermined and falling into the ocean.

My artwork celebrates the things that make me happy.  While my subject matter does vary, I am greatly influenced by my love of color, animals, and nature.  I have always lived close to the sea, so water and the color blue seem to be a part of me and often make it onto my canvas. When I get an idea for a painting and I can’t stop thinking about it, I know it’s time to get to work.  Often it’s these obsessive moments that lead to the best work.  The most rewarding feeling is seeing a smile on the face of someone viewing my work and nothing compares to the satisfaction of having someone bring home a piece of my work. Hopefully, my artwork makes you happy too!

“Don’t Let Someone Dim Your Light Just Because it Shines In Their Eyes” by Charlie Cote

 

 

Cheryl Cote’ (pronounced “koh-TAY”) is a prolific, contemporary artist who lost her right eye to cancer when she was only six months old.  In 2010, Cheryl also lost a significant portion of central vision in her remaining eye to a condition known as retinal edema.  This condition prevents Cheryl from driving and reading written text requires a magnifying glass.  Cheryl is currently under the care of a well-known retinal oncologist in Miami.  She has appointments every three weeks to undergo extensive diagnostics and have an injection into her eye to preserve her vision.  Despite Cheryl’s visual impairment she recently found a way to return to her passion for art.  Cheryl hopes her artwork will bring joy to those who view it and that it encourages others struggling to overcome their own challenges in life.

Jewelry often defines the personality and style of a person.  Jewelry By Whiticar offers you many options to explore your own “look.”.  What do you like to wear?  Are you more conservative, or do you walk on the wild side?  When you look at different selections, what catches your eye? Laura Kay is a native Floridian.  She grew up in Stuart, Florida, in a boating family.  Majoring in mathematics led to a career of teaching high school math.  After retiring, she became interested in learning sign language, and she interpreted at the Treasure Coast Deaf Church.  A traveling adventure led to an interest in designing and making jewelry.  Recently she discovered sailing (growing up was all about power boats) and is a member of two sailing clubs!! There are just not enough hours in the day!!

“City Scape”  by James J. DeMartis

 

 

James J. DeMartis (1926 – 1996) was an American painter of the post-World War II generation who explored a wide variety of styles and media; he is best known for his abstract expressionist works. DeMartis’ late style between the 1980s and 1990s has been characterized as “a blend of romantic realism and abstract expressionism. Landscapes, figures, still lifes and abstract works dominate his subject matter. The paint is applied in a lush impasto and lyric flowing line.”

“Reflections in Isolation” by Dot Galfond

 

Dot Galfond is a contemporary fused glass artist who resides in Palm City, Florida. Since childhood she has had her hands in some sort of art project; from silversmithing to stage design and construction in high school to computer graphic design and photography. Her love of glass began in 1992 with a stained glass class which eventually led her to her true artistic passion – fused glass. She loves the technological challenge and the complexity of the medium. Heating glass to its molten form; the look of fluid, moving glass. This flowing movement is evident in her body of work.

Carol Kepp was educated in advertising at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Cleveland Ad School. Carol returned to fine art and is teaching art classes and workshops at the Hobe Sound Fine Arts League Gallery and The Artist Nook in Stuart. It has always been a hidden talent since childhood, as I watched my family members display this gift as architects, graphic designers and decorators.I am inspired to paint flowers and landscape themes, as I learn about viewing colors and how beautifully light reflects upon nature creating shapes and movement.My desire in artis to convey a sense of joy through this meaningful expression of nature. It is a tool of communication with amessage that will bring a sense of balance and alignment to the viewer.Colors in art bring a sense of well being.  Whether used inRealism or Impressionistic, they are tools  to impart beauty and bring about vibrations of good mood and stability.

For Lynn Morgan, creating art is an integral part of her philosophy of being consciously aware of the world around her.  Lynn has been creating art all of her life.  Until her retirement from the corporate world, art was one of her hobbies, but it was the only hobby that she never tired of.  She knew that when she retired, she would reinvent herself as an artist, and that’s what she did.  By attending classes and workshops, she learned techniques that have evolved over the years from realistic renderings to a much more abstract style.  Lynn loves to travel the world and is considered quite the adventurer by her friends.  Her works are inspired by the sights and sounds of her travels to various parts of the world.

“Mable” by Billie Jo Thompson

 

 

Billie is an award winning artist who was born and educated in Canada. Billie earned a diploma in fine arts at Central Technical College in Toronto majoring in 3-D. She studied at Emily Carr University in Vancouver. While raising a family, Billie continued to paint and participated in many solo and group shows and garnered a number of awards. Billie, an accomplished mural artist, also completed a number of commissions for both corporate and private clients.  In 2010 Billie became a paint coordinator in the film industry, creating the wonderful scenic worlds of notable films including “The Magicians”, “Big Eyes”, “Continuum”, “The Confirmation” and many others. Billie also painted commissioned pieces featured in two Tim Burton films, “Big Eyes” and “Miss Peregrines Home for peculiar Children”.  Billie currently splits her time between Vancouver Canada and Jensen Beach, FL. Billie’s current inspiration is the spirit of the ocean, the skies and the natural beauty of the tropics.

St. Lucie Arts Alliance Shares Call For Youth Art K-12 And College Students In St. Lucie County. Deadline Is August 2, 2020

The St. Lucie Arts Alliance announces a Call For Youth Art, including grades K-12 and College students!  There is no fee to enter “Young Hearts To Arts” which will include a virtual gallery as well as a county-wide exhibition tour at local venues! This will be a two-part campaign:

 

A contest, which will take place online (website and social media) a county-wide exhibition tour at local venues

Participants are to illustrate love, friendship, community, or compassion in their masterpieces. Submissions will be entered into four categories:

Elementary school, Middle school, High school, College

Submitted artwork will be voted for by the general public. Each category will have a 1st place and 2nd place winners. Don’t miss this opportunity to be innovative, get your work showcased in public and win amazing prizes!

Contest guidelines:

  1. Participants must be local K-12 or college students
  2. Submitted art must be original work of the participant
  3. Artwork should not contain a demonstration of violence
  4. Submission must not depict hatred towards a person/ group
  5. Submissions will be accepted online (arrangements may be made for in-person submissions)
  6. Each participant may submit a short video, a maximum of 5 minutes, detailing the inspiration behind the submitted artwork. (optional)
  7. The submission deadline is Sunday, August 2, 2020.
  8. Participants who fail to abide by these rules will be disqualified

Judy Burgarella spends a lot of time designing her class so that people will not fail.  When they sign up, she sends them a lined pattern, and in class she shows them how to get that pattern onto the canvas.  She explains, “This is not a drawing class, it’s a painting class. Drawing takes years to learn.  Even if some of them do not have a “masterpiece,” they will have learned a lot of tips and tricks to add to their knowledge of painting”.  Many of her students have said that they have learned more in her class than any other class they have taken.  “For 3 hours, I never shut up.  I am hoping to get many other artists onboard to teach this class so that we have diversity and variety to offer”.

Judy Burgarella tells The Rickie Report, “My career in business involved mostly administration/ secretarial work, and printing and editing. As my passion to pursue art became stronger I began writing and designing for arts & crafts magazines, in addition to running my own secretarial service. I eventually started an art club, the “Shoreline Plein Air Painters” in Connecticut”.

In 2005, Judy and her husband Bob moved to Florida, and she soon joined the Vero Beach Art Club and other local arts organizations, where she became very active, helping out with shows and wherever her skills were needed. In 2012 her daughter Robin and family moved to Sebastian, and Judy currently helps her with her real estate business staging homes and using her own paintings in the décor.

Judy has studied under renowned artists in Connecticut and Florida, and has taught painting and drawing for over 20 years. She currently teaches portrait painting at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, general art at Indian River Estates, and does free-lance classes and demonstrations for groups and individuals. Judy is constantly on the lookout for new creative opportunities, and ways to give back to the community.

The Florida Watercolor Society’s “Creative Confinement Challenge” Online Exhibition – Original And Affordable Art For Everyone

What happens when 100 watercolor artists are cooped-up and concerned about shows, sales, and funding for not-for-profit arts organizations like the Florida Watercolor Society? FWS came up with the “Creative Confinement 64-Inch Challenge”! Members were challenged to “confine” their work to 64-square inches (8″ x 8″), creating an original water media artwork to express their feelings or experiences during the “safer-at-home mandate”. The Challenge gave the artists inspiration to create, a place to show and now, sell their work, and the entry fees raised money for the FWS Healing Arts Award for the 49th Annual Exhibition.  This virtual exhibit is showing now through August 15, 2020. The Rickie Report gives you a sneak-peek of some of the images and urges you to hurry to make a purchase! The prices are affordable and the images offer diverse subject matter! We also include information about the FWS 49th Annual Exhibition and upcoming virtual workshops, demonstrations, Convention & Trade Show. About the Florida Watercolor Society:

 

The Florida Watercolor Society is the largest State society in the United States with nearly 1000 members. Our mission is to promote the art of watercolor and to educate the public as to the importance of watercolor as a creative and permanent painting medium while contributing to the cultural atmosphere of the state of Florida.

 

 

FWS’ Annual Awards are among the most outstanding of the major state water media organizations in the country. They are made possible by sponsors including individuals, businesses, and memorial gifts from the estates of members who have passed. The annual cash and merchandise awards usually total over $20,000, including two $1500 purchase awards. One of these is sponsored by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, a major sponsor and great friend of FWS. The other is the Healing Arts Award given by FWS to purchase a painting from the Annual Exhibition to be donated to a medical facility of the current President’s choosing. This year, the painting is going to Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg where the annual events were to be held before COVID-19 came into the picture. Since their live annual Fall events were canceled, FWS came up with the Creative Confinement Challenge to raise funds for the Healing Arts Award!

 

 

FWS’ main events each year are an Annual Exhibition, Convention & Trade Show every fall in various locations throughout Florida. FWS also hosts an Online Show for our Non-Signature members. At our Convention, we host two 4-day workshops and at least one 1-day workshop taught by invited internationally-known artists. During Convention weekend, demonstrations by noted artists are presented hourly, as well as critiques, silent auctions, raffles, and a host of other wonderful activities. There are Member and Non-Member rates to register for the Convention, however, the Trade Show is free and open to the public.

THE 2020 FWS ANNUAL CONVENTION & TRADE  SHOW GO VIRTUAL

Since the cancellation of 2020 fall events, the FWS board has been working very hard to create virtual offerings during the week the Convention & Trade Show would have taken place.  While this could never substitute for a live gathering, there will still be a Convention featuring demonstrations by noted artists, workshops, interviews, and even opportunities to purchase art supplies from our Trade Show vendors! 

There will even be an online Exhibition Review by Michael Reardon, judge & juror for the 49th Annual Exhibition.
