The National Association of  Women Artists is a vibrant community of professional women artists that strive to support its members and women artists largely through exhibitions, programs and education. The history of NAWA is a testament to the strength and resilience of a group of strong women in 1889 who would not accept being shut out of the art salons, galleries and art exhibitions open to male artists during the 19th century. Despite adversity and discrimination – which many feel extends to our present day — women remain an integral and invaluable part of the arts community. NAWA members represent all areas of the visual arts including painting, sculpture, photography, print-making, encaustic, video art, installations and mixed media.

Established in 1995, the Florida Chapter is proud to carry on the work of Liana Moonie, its founder, and its first president, Madeline Weiss. The Florida Chapter continues to extend the mission of our National organization by providing highly visible Florida venues, designing art education opportunities for its members and promoting art education to Florida communities. We continue to encourage the next generation of women artists to strive for even more visibility in the art world at large.  Distinguished artist and longtime NAWA member Dorothy Cochran served as the Entry Juror for the exhibition and the Juror for Awards is Florida resident Elaine Baker of the Sponder Gallery in Boca Raton.

The National Association Of Women Artists, Inc. Florida Chapter (NAWA) is presenting a multi-media exhibition titled “Down the Rabbit Hole,” which will be hosted by the Armory Art Center Annex in Lake Worth.  The public is invited to the Opening Reception on March 3rd. Everyone is invited to view and purchase the art, as well as enjoy drinks, refreshments, and live music by Sunnyside Swing at this Free event. There will also be an Artist Talk on Saturday, March 25th,  In addition to the Juried art, which will be on view through March 26, 2017, a section of the gallery will be exhibiting works by three students in the Dreyfoos School of the Arts who were the recipients of NAWA Florida Chapter Art Scholarships. The public is invited to the Opening Reception on March 3rd, 6 – 8 PM, at which time First, Second, Third Place, and Judge’s Recognition awards will be announced. Everyone is invited to view and purchase the art, as well as enjoy drinks, refreshments, and live music by Sunnyside Swing at this free event. There will also be an Artist Talk on Saturday, March 25th, 2 – 4 pm.

“Searching For Home” by Judith Carlin

Exhibition Chair, Roberta Millman-Ide, is among the impressive artists whose work will be exhibited. She received her BFA in Advertising Design from California State University and worked as an Art Director for two well-known advertising agencies before moving to the east coast where she started her own design company. Since 2006, Roberta’s primary focus has been on creating and exhibiting her artwork. She is pleased to announce that Nicole Hickey, Manager of Artist Services at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, will be the juror for the exhibit.

In addition to the Juried art, which will be on view through March 26, 2017, a section of the gallery will be exhibiting works by three students in the Dreyfoos School of the Arts who were the recipients of NAWA Florida Chapter Art Scholarships. NAWA artist members raised the scholarship funds by creating works of art on 6” x 6” canvases, which they sold for $50 each. The organization is proud to make this investment in the lives of young female artists.

N.A.W.A. is the oldest professional women’s fine arts group in the United States, and The Florida Chapter of N.A.W.A. was the first regional chapter in the country. It was founded in 1995 by Liana Moonie, recently deceased resident of Palm Beach, a past president of the national organization and Madeline Weiss, who was the first president of the Florida Chapter. All artists wishing to join the prestigious Florida Chapter must first be juried into the Association Headquarters in New York City.

So often, when we speak of “visionaries”, we are mindful of those people from the not-too-distant past and usually, the present.   The Rickie Report shares an article about  visionary artists who anticipated the needs of others 125 years ago! They formed the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) to foster public awareness of, and interest in, visual art created by women in the United States.  NAWA promotes culture and education in the visual arts through exhibitions of its members’ works, educational programs, scholarships, awards and its historical archives.  While encouraging contemporary and emerging artists, NAWA honors and continues the long and important contribution of women to the history of American culture and art.  The Rickie Report hopes that emerging as well as established artists will consider membership in this prestigious group. It goes beyond networking for one’s own gain, as they secure the future for the arts here in the United States.

The National Association of Women Artists, Inc. (NAWA), the first professional women’s fine arts group in the United States, is proud to celebrate its 125th Anniversary in 2014.  Five innovative women in New York City founded the not-for-profit in 1889 to foster public awareness and interest in visual art created by women as well as to empower, support and encourage women artists. Its early exhibitions included works by such notable artists as Mary Cassatt and Suzanne Valadon, and later membership rosters included Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel, and Judy Chicago.

125 Years: Women of Vision

The Florida Chapter of NAWA was the first regional chapter in the country. It was founded in 1995 by Liana Moonie, of Palm Beach, a past president of the national organization and Madeline Weiss, who was the first president of the Florida Chapter. The Chapter takes part in regional exhibitions, seminars and other educational activities as well as sponsoring annual scholarships for talented art students. All artists wishing to join the Florida Chapter must first be juried into the Association Headquarters in New York City.
During this celebratory year the theme is “Women of Vision.”  Members must have been juried into N.A.W.A., where they were eligible to be juried into the national show, a forum for women artists from all over the United States. This multimedia show, “125 Years: Women of Vision,” which will include sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics and mixed media will take place at our own Armory Art Center, 1700 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach, December 5, 2014 – January 10, 2015. Rhoda Sherbell, a distinguished portrait sculptor, will jury entries for the exhibit, and Ashley Ford, the Sophie Davis Curatorial Fellow at the Norton Museum of Art, will jury the awards.

Artists are juried in twice a year,in the fall and in the spring. There are many benefits from belonging to this nationally recognized organization.
