Bruce Helander ( photo courtesy of Robert Nelson)

JUROR:

Bruce Helander is an art critic, arts writer, curator and artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a former White House fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and has won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts. He is one of two 2014 inductees to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, Florida’s most prestigious arts and culture honor (the other is musician Tom Petty).

City Link magazine called Bruce Helander “Arguably the most recognized and successful collage artist in the country…” and Kenworth Moffett, the former director of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, said in Gold Coast magazine that “If there was a Pulitzer Prize for collage, Helander would surely win it.”

His work is in over fifty museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Smithsonian, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles. The artist and his work has been the subject of 100 reviews and articles in numerous publications, including Art in America, ARTnews, and The Washington Post.

Helander is the former Editor-in-Chief of The Art Economist magazine and recently exhibited his work at Georgia Scherman Projects (Toronto), Corzine Fine Art (Los Angeles), Peter Marcelle Gallery (Bridgehampton, New York), Cornell Museum of Art (Delray Beach), and ArtHouse 429 (West Palm Beach). Most currently, his work was shown by Arcature Fine Art at Art Miami and Art Miami New York/Pier 94 and by Tansey Contemporary at Art Wynwood.  Helander is now focusing on a retrospective of his collages and paintings for the Coral Springs Museum of Art, scheduled for 2017, and his collages are included in “Open This End,” a five-year traveling museum show of works from the celebrated Blake Byrne collection in Los Angeles, currently at the Nasher Museum of Art.

Brenda’s abstract artworks are featured in exhibitions throughout the US and are in international private and public collections (Boca Raton Museum of Art, St. Regis Hotel NYC, Double Line Capital LA, and M.D Anderson Cancer Center Houston TX, to name a few)

Born in Tallahasee Fl, William started his artistic career as a color consultant for his family’s Design and Painting company that took on constant projects of custom painted interiors and decorating. This work of 20 yrs lead him to his fascination with textiles and paint, along with custom furniture. After creating and selling dozens of unique pieces of furniture, here began his transition from wall, to wood on furniture, to canvas. Painting on canvas was the culmination of his creative outlet. William feels that his lack of formal training in Fine Art has afforded him a freedom to paint what he envisions and feels, rather than conform to specific style or genre that he feels is limiting. Inspired by hard edge abstraction and color field art such as Kenneth Noland, Joseph Albers, Gene Davis, Frank Stella, Anne Truitt, Imi knobel. William shows his work locally and nationally and is being collected in Palm Beach Island, Washington and New York. Gallery Representation in Palm Beach, Miami, Boston and New York.

Art Synergy is a 501 (c) 3, not for profit arts organization founded in 2013. The fruit of the labors of Rolando Chang Barrero, Craig McInnis and Freddy Hennevelt grew out of the original Think Tank,. It has flourished through grassroots efforts beginning with a partnership with Art Palm Beach.  Currently, Rolando Chang Barrero, President and Ilene Gruber Adams, Vice President are managing the organization along with the support of many artists and art lovers in the community. Volunteers and board members are always welcome.

By March 2017, Art Synergy will have organized 6 juried exhibition that have provided Florida based artists to have their work seen, and collected by national and international collectors and art patrons. Also, Art Synergy assists nine Florida art districts organize, promote and market over 65 exhibitions in each year throughout the Palm Beach and Martin County durning Art Palm Beach week which was initiated January 2014.

The nine art districts are: Antique Row Art District,Boynton Beach Art District,Delray Art Art District,Lake ParkArt District,North Palm Beach Art District,Lake Worth Art District,Northwood Village Art District,West Palm Beach Art District,Palm Beach Art District.

In 2016 Art Synergy was classified as a 501 (c) 3 not for profit arts organization which will allow for contributions and donations to a fund currently being created to allow needy families join experiential cultural experiences. This was possible because of the generosity of David and Lee Ann Lester of Next Level Fairs who donate exhibition spaces (Booths) at 2 of the Next Level Fairs: Art Palm Beach and Art Boca Raton.

ART SYNERGY is a countywide movement to unify and promote the diverse culture of our vibrant arts community. ART SYNERGY’s future goals include events that will happen periodically throughout the year, the addition of more participating art districts, and initiatives that help unify the many diverse art entities, and talented artists that Palm Beach County has to offer. With the help of local CRAs, Public Arts Departments, the DDA in WPB and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County (to name a few), ART SYNERGY has only one place to go… onward and upward.

Drawn to organic fiber, Howat expresses her attraction to texture and form through tapestry weaving, knotting, and basket making. Materials such as yarn, paper, twine, leather, ribbon, reed and natural flora, rocks, and pods are combined into the pieces. Erica said, “Inspiration from the form, texture, and wildness of certain materials brings about a creative flow to make a piece that emphasizes the unique, natural beauty that grows around us and which may otherwise be taken for granted.”

SOLO Exhibit At Cultural Council Of Palm Beach County Features Karen Salup’s Vibrant Paintings

As an abstract expressionist, Karen H. Salup concentrates on the action of painting as opposed to a recognizable concrete image. The brushstrokes act like vibrations of color to allow her paintings to come alive. Painting in her studio in Boynton Beach she concentrates on the canvas and works on paper “avoiding the pretty.” She invites the viewer to experience what seems to be her private interpretation into her landscapes of rhythm and imagery. Very active in the art world, she is on the board of Women in the Visual Arts and is involved with National Association of Women Artist, Florida and New York Chapters, Palm Beach Watercolor Society and is the Incoming President for Women in the Visual Arts. Salup has exhibited nationally and has won multiple awards for her work. The Rickie Report shares some sneak peeks and details here.

"Birthday Celebration" by Karen H Salup

“Birthday Celebration” by Karen H Salup

For three decades, Karen H. Salup has been intriguing audiences across the country with her paintings. A native New Yorker, Karen’s work has been featured in several galleries and exhibits throughout Florida and New York with solo shows at Viridian and Jain Marunouchi Galleries.

"Mountain Stream" by Karen H Salup

“Mountain Stream” by Karen H Salup

Using acrylic, watercolor, and pastels on canvas and paper, Karen H. Salup creates a world that vibrates with bold colors and bright light paired with brushstrokes that evoke a strong sense of movement and energy. Her paintings begin with a theme of nature, but invariably evolve into an imaginative creation that invites interpretation from the audience. Karen’s work is influenced from Impressionism to Deconstructionism to Abstract Expressionism.

"Untitled Landscape" by Karen H Salup

“Untitled Landscape” by Karen H Salup

Karen tells us, “As with artists of every era, I suppose I’m searching for a kind of underlying unity and order that takes into account the materials on hand, a method, and a fairly clear personal point of view. Form, space, content and especially the qualities of colour and light. As a painting evolves, I find myself making changes which when made, then reveal and suggest other possible directions. Thus, there is an ongoing shift of centers of interest, if not in the basic structure itself.  The works vibrate with color, come alive with brushstrokes, images fight to appear and references to nature seem apparent. The freshness of the gesture allows the viewer to feel the painting develop as though we were making the decisions to add, subtract, change colors and play with the space.”

"Crystallize" by Karen H Salup

“Crystallize” by Karen H Salup

Karen studied at CW Post and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.  Her mentor, artist and sculptor, Jerry Okimoto, motivated her to become an “action painter”.  Her main artistic influences are Jackson Pollock and Willem de Koonig.  Karen is extremely active in the art community, serving on the Board of Women In The Visual Arts (WITVA)as Incoming President, membership in the Palm Beach Watercolor Society, National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) and the Boca Raton Artist Guild Association.

"The Storm" by Karen H Salup

“The Storm” by Karen H Salup

Karen’s artistry has been exhibited nationwide, with many awards as well as SOLO and Group exhibitions.  Most recently, her work has been seen at “Continuum”, part of Art Palm Beach/Art Synergy; Northwood University; Coral Springs Art Museum; Armory Art Center and ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale. Her artwork has been included and reviewed in numerous national as well as local publications.  Karen’s artwork is in Corporate Collections of Reynolds Metal Inc., VA; Boston Corporate Art; Merchants Bank of New York City; Amalgamated Bank of New York City;  and Paintingsdirect.com when she was selected to be involved at the beginning, of an online source of  art exposure and sales.

JF Gallery Presents “Above the Couch”, a Fresh Look at Exhibiting Artwork

“What type of art is the best to display above the couch?  Size, color, and genre come into play. Is one piece of art just right, too small, or is the work of art strong enough to carry the wall and the couch? Sometimes one large single piece is enough, at other times, it’s a grouping of art that gives the wall impact. What are your intentions? Demure or Bold?”  These are all of the decisions Joseph Pubillones plus nine well-known designers took into consideration as they show off their design process with pairings of sofas, loveseats and chairs along with their selection of art at “Above the Couch”. This fresh exhibit has been curated by Designer and Design Columnist, Joseph Pubillones and appears at JF Gallery in West Palm Beach.  The Rickie Report gives you the details and a sneak peak.
