Shopping for a special piece of jewelry for a gift or for yourself?

Additional highlights include raffles for jewelry custom-made by club artisans and hourly drawings for items contributed by the vendors, as well as a silent auction with numerous unique items donated by club members such as jewelry, beads, stones, books, and equipment. Children are always welcome with a special area where they can learn about rock and gemstone identification and make their own jewelry.

Do you make jewelry and need something unusual to perfect your latest design?

Attendees who want to learn the skills will have the opportunity to join the St. Lucie County Rock and Gem Club, which offers many different classes to its members. Anyone wanting to join the club can take advantage of the show special and for $40 get 14 months for the price of 12.

Want to sell unwanted jewelry so you can buy something new?

Are you interested in making jewelry, but don’t know where to start?

Sign up for a class (only $5) and make a piece of jewelry that you will be proud to wear home. Club members will also demonstrate a variety of techniques, including bead weaving, faceting (turning a bit of rock into a sparkling gem), creating cabochons, wire wrapping and weaving, and chain maille.

Fascinated by geology and gems or love looking at nature’s beautiful gifts?

Our mission is simply to provide a gathering place, forum and network to promote lapidary and related arts. The St. Lucie County Rock and Gem Club welcomes members from the counties of Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Brevard and beyond.

The St. Lucie County Rock and Gem Club was founded in 1975 when area rockhounds decided to organize and share their knowledge and skills. The Club now has more than 100 active members from throughout the region. Classes are offered in the club’s fully-equipped workshop throughout the year. Each class is taught by a skilled volunteer who is a club member. Classes are held in 8-week increments, with additional “pop-up” classes available as demand and opportunity occur.

A    Sampling    of    Classes:

Fees for the classes range from $35 to $65. Open workshop times are also available for a fee to members who have demonstrated experience with the tools and equipment. The monthly general membership meeting is held on the fourth Sunday of the month. Because of COVID, meetings are currently held via Zoom (remote presence via computer). When possible, the club will return to its former gathering place at the White City Methodist Church on Midway Road (opposite Nelson Family Farms) in the Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Don’t Know What To Do With Your Old, Unwanted Jewelry? How About A Radical Jewelry Makeover! Lighthouse ArtCenter, Armory Art Center And Resource Depot Bring Successful Project, Radical Jewelry Makeover To South Florida During Winter/Spring Season 2020. You Can Take Part!

Lighthouse ArtCenter, Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM), Armory Art Center, and Resource Depot are seeking donations of old unwanted jewelry for the community jewelry mining project happening in Tequesta, FL this coming winter 2020. RJM has been traveling nationally and internationally to communities since 2007, educating jewelers of all levels about mining and material sourcing issues involved in jewelry making through a fun, fast paced, 8 week-long project.  Jewelry students and professional jewelers from the region will transform donations into radically fresh and responsible jewelry.  The project culminates in an exhibition and sale of these wearable creations at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery March 19-April 24, 2020. The Opening Reception is on March 19, 2020The Rickie Report shares the details of how/where to donate your unwanted jewelry NOW – December 21,2019, the Kick Off Party/Symposium on January 4, 2020.  Jewelry students and professionals will transform the donations between January 4 -March 4, 2020.  Want to get involved? It is EASY!

Radical   Jewelry   Makeover   –

South   Florida

A PROJECT OF: Ethical Metalsmiths

SUPPORTED BY:

Lighthouse ArtCenter, Armory Art Center, and Resource Depot

Those tangled chains, unmatched earrings and banged up bracelets sitting at the bottom of jewelry boxes around the South Florida area are exactly what jewelry artists participating in Radical Jewelry Makeover – South Florida want to get their creative hands on. Until December 21st the non-profit, Ethical Metalsmiths and Lighthouse ArtCenter are accepting donations of old, unwanted jewelry at several Palm Beach County area locations (see complete list below). Donors will receive discount coupons to apply toward the purchase of a new piece and sales will benefit student scholarships and Ethical Metalsmiths‘ efforts to educate and connect people with responsibly sourced materials.

RJM draws attention to the creativity and skills of local jewelry designers, reveals the stories behind our personal collections and encourages re-consideration of our habits of consumption. Currently, materials used in jewelry production are sourced from some of the poorest countries in the world, sacred lands and disputed territories. Often this sourcing comes at a great cost to the environment. In Tequesta, FL, RJM will bring together volunteer “miners,” who dig out and donate their old jewelry, with volunteer jewelers and students, working together as refiners and designers to collaborate on an exhibition of re-made jewelry. Radical Jewelry Makeover will offer an informed and creative alternative to traditional mining practices and jewelry production. You can help by donating some of the smallest items in your home, jewelry, for reuse and recycling.

WHY  IS  THIS  IMPORTANT ?

Did you know Titanium is mined in the State of Florida? Heavy minerals like Titanium have been mined in Florida since 1916. Titanium can be found in the sand of many of the beaches that line our State and is used for a variety of things from paint and makeup to helicopters and spacecraft. Today, the EPA estimates that hard rock mining is the most toxic industry in the United States. Additionally, Earthworks reports that an estimated 70% of the gold mined each year is used for jewelry, and that a single gold ring leaves more than 20 tons of mine waste. Ethical Metalsmiths, an artist run non-profit organization seeks to galvanize mining reform efforts by staging an “alternative supply chain” and is working with the Lighthouse ArtCenter, Armory Art Center and Resource Depot to bring their successful project, Radical Jewelry Makeover to South Florida in the Winter/Spring season 2020.

HOW TO DONATE YOUR JEWELRY:

To donate jewelry of any quality, quantity or material type please download and submit the official project donation form. The outreach program and has served over 45 US veterans to date. A licensed mental health therapist or a certified art therapist and Armory instructors conduct the classes. Artwork in the exhibition will be from the classes in various media that the Armory offers: ceramics-wheel throwing and tile making, paper making, painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and welding. Two different classes run weekly for 2-3 hours during each 6-7 week term.  Currently all of the veterans are selected to participate by the VA Medical Center of West Palm Beach.

VA Creative Arts Therapist Sara E. Windrem explains that due to traumas many veterans don’t go to movie theaters and can’t go to the mall because of the crowds. The Armory has given the veterans a new comfort zone. Sara said, “I think people naturally know how to heal with art. Making them feel comfortable in a space and giving them the skills and the opportunity as a starting point is where the real healing and therapy takes place.”

Veterans explore ceramic tile making with instructor Dereck Decker

The exhibition reception is Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Exhibition attendees can meet some of the veterans, instructors, and mental health professionals. The cost to attend the opening reception is $5 for non-members, members can attend free. US Veterans admitted for free with valid Military Veteran ID.
