So that bracelet you are wearing can trace its origins to some Neanderthal roaming the forest. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? It makes sense when you realize the origination of jewelry spans many thousands of years. Jewelry is one of the oldest archeological artifacts – shell beads from the Neanderthal area around 115,000 years ago were some of the earliest discoveries. Throughout history, jewelry has been a universal form of adornment – to show status or rank, as a recognition of affiliation (religious, political) and as a symbol of personal meaning (love, mourning, luck). Thanks to the ingenuity of the Greeks adding gemstones to gold in 1600 BC, jewelry has evolved into a stunning form of art. Fast forward to today, and there is an endless variety of jewelry adorning our bodies, our fashion, our homes. Two local artisans who have embraced this art form are being featured in the upcoming event,Glass, Jewelry and Wearable Art at The Craft Gallery in West Palm Beach.

Rickie Leiter, publisher of – you guessed it – The Rickie Report, will be showcasing some of her beautiful jewelry at this event. Most of her pieces incorporate a variety of gemstones, many with a central, unusual focal piece to complement the stones. Her one-of-a-kind pieces have been sold in museum shops, local galleries and wearable art boutiques. It’s no surprise that Rickie landed squarely in the middle of South Florida’s local art scene. Raised in a decidedly creative household with an affinity for community activism and an appreciation of nature, she has explored many avenues during her artistic journey. From art consultant and board member of an international organization to special needs advocate and online publisher, Rickie’s creativity shines in her art.

Irene Jalowayski, an accomplished glass artist in Palm Beach County, will thrill you with her exquisite jewelry using glass and metals. Working in fused glass, cast glass and mixed media, Irene has an incredible eye for color and style. Her use of dichroic glass adds even more color explosion to her pieces. In addition to her unique jewelry designs, you’ll see her creative style emerge in her glass pieces – sculptures, vases, platters, Judaica, candlesticks and so much more. Always an art lover and collector, Irene started “playing” in fused glass 15 years ago, studying with master glass artists in the area. What started as a hobby has evolved into a passion, and it shows! The winner of numerous awards, her work has been seen in galleries, art shows and exhibitions around South Florida.

One of a Kind Necklace by Irene Jalowayski

Irene’s jewelry pieces are distinctive.

Her wearable art pieces include one-of-a-kind necklaces, earrings, and cuff bracelets.

Each object is truly unique, not only due to the glass work, but because she understands the wearer’s need to own a singular adornment.

“Fly Away” by Irene Jalowayski

“Fly Away” is cast glass on metal.  The metallic background is a tree of life.

The three large cast glass feathers are surrounded by cast glass hummingbirds, glass leaves and flowers.

Irene’s increasingly detailed process as a glass artist shows the degree to which she has pushed herself to stretch boundaries, and in glass work, that is challenging!  “Fly Away” was featured at Continuum/Art Palm Beach 2019 and at the Cornell Museum at the Women in The Visual Arts exhibit “Celebrating 30 Artful Years”, where it won an honorable mention.  (That show was extremely competitive and accepted only 20 pieces).  Irene tells The Rickie Report, “To me it represents the beauty and freedom of nature and the desire to escape the humdrum of city life once in a while”.

One of a Kind Seder plate by Irene Jalowayski

The viewer can feel the excitement of Irene’s creative process. Her personal glass collection in includes creations from the United States, Italy, and Sweden. Her inspiration comes from nature and her own imagination, as you will see with “Fly Away”.  The process of casting glass is complicated and more difficult than that of fused glass.  First, Irene makes a clay sculpture. Over the weeks that it takes to dry, she will continue to incise, brush, and assure that the mold is exact.  Then she casts the mold in plaster.  Once the plaster is dry, the mold is filled with glass and fired to 450 degrees for 38 hours.  Once cooled, the mold is broken away from the glass, resulting in a solid piece of glass which will never be reproduced!

One of a kind Fused glass earrings, necklaces, and bracelets by Irene Jalowayski

Irene’s fused art glass pieces are filled with colorful dichroic glass mixed in bright, beautiful backgrounds. The viewer can feel the excitement of the creative process!  Her abstract sculptures will enhance any decor.  Irene’s functional art pieces include cast glass jewelry boxes, bowls, vases, plates of varying sizes, and small accent tables. Her Judaica array includes mezzuzahs, candle sticks, menorahs, matzah plates, and she offers to create a unique bowl using the shards of the glass which is broken during the wedding ceremony!

Confetti glass vase by Irene Jalowayski

It’s only been 6 short years since Irene was featured as an emerging artist at ArtiGras. She studied with Sidney Escowitz and has taken classes with McMow Art Glass and Art Glass Environments, before becoming a teacher herself!  She never loses sight of the creative excitement when she open a kiln.  She shares that enthusiasm with her students.

Commissioned glass bowl with blue glass shards from wedding ceremony, by Irene Jalowayski

Her personal glass collection in includes creations from the United States, Italy, and Sweden. Irene’s inspiration comes from nature and her own imagination, as you will see with “Fly Away”.

A “father” is more than the biological paternal source of our being. He is a person who cares and provides for us. He is a person who helps to set the standards, the family values and the example. So, add to this group, step fathers and other men who willingly and eagerly accept and cherish the role.  Whether biological, adopted or informally, if they are the father figure to you, give him some recognition today and don’t hesitate to call him “Dad”.
