Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce Call for Artists!

The Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce is looking for artists who have found Paradise – in Palm Beach.  The 2015 Chamber Guide will mark the 10th year the chamber has used original art for its cover.  From local artists to internationally-acclaimed retailers, Palm Beach residents and chamber members alike look forward to the unveiling of the guide cover.  The Rickie Report shares the details, including the application form and a view of previous covers. Cheryl Maeder, whose work was chosen for the 2014 cover heard about it through The Rickie Report!  This year’s edition will be introduced at the November 13th breakfast at The Breakers Palm Beach.

Call for Artists

To mark a decade of original art, the chamber’s theme for the guide is PARADISE FOUND.  Those who live, work and play in Palm Beach are quick to agree that this little parcel on the Atlantic has it all.  How best to capture the essence of perfection in an image?  The artistic community is growing and thriving so where better to look?  Collage, photographs, paintings or sculpture, all mediums are welcome.

The Chamber will be accepting images via e-mail in either Jpeg or Adobe format between now and August 1st.  All entries must file a release to qualify.  A collage of past covers and the submission form are available on the chamber’s website

For more information please contact Palm Beach Chamber Executive Director, Laurel Baker or 561.655.3282

Sheryl Hughes is Featured at 34th Annual Festival of Arts in Deerfield Beach

Sheryl Hughes has been taking photographs for many years and uses those pictures as inspiration for her art work.  You will find her at the 24th Annual Festival of the Arts in Deerfield Beach January 25 & 26th.  Sheryl’s colorful acrylic painting was chosen as the 2014 Festival Poster art! The Rickie Report is pleased to share the details in this article.

The Art of

Sheryl Hughes

Sheryl Hughes’  favorite hobbies are scuba diving and photography. She especially enjoys taking pictures of Florida’s wildlife.  When you look at her paintings, what truly amazes are the small details…the eyelashes of the elephant,  the whisped veining of the egret feathers, the brightness of the birds and the eyes of the jungle cats.

Sheryl Hughes is a native Californian who has in recent years relocated to Florida. She has always had a creative side. After her daughters were grown she began concentrating on painting as an outlet for her creativity.   When Sheryl began painting, she focused on oceans and lighthouses. They were peaceful places where she enjoyed spending time and taking pictures. Then in taking more and more pictures at zoos, wetlands, rice fields, and even backyards she was drawn to birds and wildlife.

The birds in Florida are a wonderful treat to watch and take pictures of. Sheryl can spend hours walking through wetlands, refuges and all the areas we have here that give her a world of opportunities for amazing paintings. Sheryl started traveling to different areas to seek her inspiration. She has travel up and down both the east and west coasts of the US seeking more ideas.

Turtles and sea life are other wildlife themes close to her heart. As a scuba diver for the last 10 years, Sheryl has traveled around Florida, the Caribbean and Mexico taking underwater photos. The underwater world is so amazing to Sheryl, she loves to share what she experiences with everyone through her art. Her sea turtle paintings are some of her more requested paintings.

She has donated paintings to the Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary to help in their fundraising efforts. Several of her painting are on display at the hospital as well. Her paintings can be found in private collections, businesses and schools. She has even been asked to put her art on mailboxes and on dive mask straps. She also created a mural of an underwater scene at a school in California.

"Snowy Egret"

“Standing Egret”

Sheryl’s paintings have taken awards in numerous juried shows and exhibits. Locally, she placed 1st place at Friends of Okeeheelee Nature Center. December 2013.  “Standing Egret” was also part of the Fall National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS) International Exhibition in 2013

"Bird and Beaks"

“Bird and Beaks”

“Birds and Beaks”  was an award winner at the Texas Wildlife Juried Art Show 2011 and has been seen at The Craft Gallery “The Art of Florida” juried exhibition.   Sheryl’s paintings are more than color.  It is the details…especially the eyes.  Sheryl’s ability to capture the essence of the bird or animal is through her canny talent in the eyes.  Sheryl found herself focusing on the eyes,  and says, “I  believe the eyes are the soul of the animal”.

As such the eyes became the focal point of her paintings. She also loves the colors you find in nature. Her painting “Birds and Beaks” came about because of both these loves. It combines the wonderful colors and eyes of all the birds. Another one of her paintings, “Red-Crested Turaco” was chosen as the cover of the European Studbook For Red-Crested Turaco, for Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, in Cotswold England. This in turn brought it to the attention of people in Angola, Southern Africa. It was used in the campaign to make the Red-Crested Turaco their national bird.

"Elephant Eye"

“Elephant Eye”

Sheryl’s “Elephant Eye” was part of the Art Basel “ENDANGERED” Exhibit 2013 and took an award at Texas Wildlife and Animal Juried Art Show the same year.  The Rickie Report is particularly thrilled about Sheryl’s involvement in the “Endangered” Exhibit, because she saw the Call to Artists in The Rickie Report!

International Art Organizers Partner with Local Galleries and Artists

The Organizers of ArtPalmBeach, Jan 23-27 and American International Art Fair (AIFA), Feb. 4-9,  invite the galleries of Palm Beach County to participate in a  county wide gallery opening weekend promotion during each of the upcoming 2014 fairs. Each gallery district is encouraged to use these Jan. and Feb. dates as a kick off of the upcoming season of gallery walks, openings or special art/cultural events.  The Rickie Report encourages Palm Beach County artists, art organizations and galleries to read this article and join together!  Read about how this partnership was born and more details in this article.

From “THINK TANK” to Action

On May 23, 2013 over 45 artists, art organizers and art promoters met to form a new group, the  Palm Beach County Think Tank.  The mission of the Think Tank is to “bring together a group for individuals committed to the advancement of the arts in Palm Beach County through the exchange of ideas and program development”.  Under the leadership of Craig McInnis, Frank Basta and Rolando Chang Barrero, the Think Tank focused on its first goal, to coalesce and energize the broad-based Palm Beach County art scene into events surrounding Art Palm Beach in January, 2014.

Through a series of open meetings and working committees, the Think Tank identified 3 different Art Districts to focus on, (Lake Worth and Boynton Beach Art districts) and Historic Northwood Village Artx (West Palm Beach) .   Last week, the two groups of galleries and artists from the 3  Art Districts met for the first time. The “Think Tank” (Lake Worth and Boynton Beach Art Districts) and Historic Northwood Village Artx (West Palm Beach).  As both these groups were working separately on art events and the organization of an Art Event, Freddy Hennevelt was key in  contacting Lee Ann Lester of  IFAE.

Craig McInnis shares, “During this meeting we decided that we want to work together on our Art Walks and on the big Art Palm Beach event in January and AIFA in February”.

Lee Ann Lester, Organizer of  IFAE LLC is enthusiastic about this partnership.  She states, ” Now is the time to plan for a very successful 2014 season. The local economy, housing market, job growth are all on the rise. We encourage each  district to form a steering committee to encourage the participation of dealer, artist and non-profit institution.  Thousands of art enthusiasts are drawn to Palm Beach County for each of these four day Fair Events. Use your combined creative intelligence to promote the arts of Palm Beach county and your gallery district.    I look forward to speaking to you personally about your ideas for these two weekends of events.”

IFAE will offer support in promoting these county wide events in the fair PR, marketing materials, web site, web links and publicity. Events will be included in the fair’s printed program which over 250,000 are distributed in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Palm Beach Daily News. Additionally, special sections devoted to Palm Beach County Arts  will be offered by “Modern Painters” and “Sculpture” December issue  magazines. These issues will be distributed at Miami Basel art fairs, conferences  and  international fairs. The magazines are offering discounted advertising rates to all local galleries.

To be able to promote the January and February events she needs a program of what we are going to do during the art events before Oct. 10th .  If you are interested in being involved in this exciting, innovative programming, PLEASE contact one or all of the Art District Representatives!

Each Art District has a representative with names and contact info.  The Rickie Report urges you to contact these representatives and join this exciting art movement!
