Seven local artists have been selected to paint outdoor murals on seven overhead doors on an active warehouse in Northwood Village as part of  CANVAS, a two-week outdoor museum experience, running November 8-22 in West Palm Beach. The competition, known as CANVAS Local Showdown will have one winner that will receive a coveted position on the official lineup for CANVAS 2016.

The competition, conceived by ArtHouse429 in collaboration with CANVAS and the Community Redevelopment Agency, will take place directly across the street from the ArtHouse429 contemporary art gallery on 25th street. The event is open to the public, and all attendees will be able to cast their vote for their favorite CANVAS Local Showdown mural by using the official CANVAS Art App. The murals will be completed during the event on the evening of Friday November 13th, and voting will continue through November 21st. The winner of CANVAS Local Showdown will be announced at the CANVAS Closing Brunch event on Sunday, November 22.

In addition to the Mural Competition, ArtHouse429 will host a Cocktail Reception throughout the evening where guests can mingle with the local artists, luminaries and world-renowned muralists from CANVAS WPB. Arthouse429 will also debut an all new group exhibition of contemporary fine art to celebrate the start of the coming season.

“We are very excited that CANVAS has selected Northwood Village to host the CANVAS Local Showdown. We conceived this event to connect the vibrant local art scene to the internationally recognized CANVAS Outdoor Museum Show. This is a wonderful acknowledgement to the artists and galleries that have worked so hard to build this area into a world class center for the arts.”  William Halliday, Owner ArtHouse429.

The CANVAS Local Showdown will also feature a modern dance performance by the Demetrius Klein Dance Factory, and DJ Cole of C-Keys Recording and Vinyl will be providing the Soundtrack for the Showdown.

20% discount on all sales

Delray Beach, FL

This third Thursday is Pat Kaufman’s one year aniversary at Artists’ Alley.  She tells The Rickie Report, “I can not believe it is one year already. I would like to invite everyone to come help me celebrate. I’m offering a 20% discount on all sales of my artwork this week and there will be wine and goodies. Some of my new pieces will be unveiled at this opening.  It will be fun!”

An award winning watercolor artist, Pat is known for her bright tropical, Key West style of paintings. She lives in a renovated cottage, built in the 1930s, in Pineapple Grove one of the historical districts of Delray Beach, with her son Trey, a disabled veteran.  In 2014, Pat was Featured Artist at the 25th Annual Delray Beach Festival of the Arts. One of her paintings was offered as the free give-away, a promotion by Howard Alan Events.

In addition to a special 20% discount on purchases to celebrate her anniversary, Pat offers fun craft classes for adults and children running all summer.  They are on different days and times.  She tells us that in her most recent class, “We are doing fish and mermaids.  All of my classes are small.  We have no more than 6 in a class.  This is a perfect place to bring a group of friends together or have some creative time with children.  Painting and embellishing is always fun!”  Contact Pat for more information and booking arrangements.

Pat tells us, “I am inspired by the wonder of color. The transparency and spontaneity of watercolors gives life to my paintings. Here in Florida and other places I have visited, there is so much color all around you. When I observe the trees blowing in the breeze, the sunlight dancing off the leaves or the light shining through blossom petals, it inspires me to paint them and see if I can capture this dance of light.”   We love seeing her work on pillows, cutting boards, tiles and table tops as well as on walls!

Last Thursdays at Brewhouse are True Celebrations!

The Brewhouse Gallery opened it’s doors in Lake Park mid-May for a “soft opening”.  The crowds have been non-stop ever since!  Fragrant coffees/ teas during the day and handcrafted beers/wine in the evenings are not the only draw (no pun intended).  This is an art gallery, a spot to meet a friend, play a board game, get into the Trivia mania or have a big laugh during the Comedy nights.  Bring your own food or take advantage of the food trucks that park nearby.  The Rickie Report is happy to report that the Brewhouse Gallery is ready for it’s Opening Reception today!  There will be a special raffle, meet-the-artists and complimentary Hors d’oeuvres.  See you there 6-8 pm!

Fabulous Felted Garments by Ellyn Bernstein

Suzanne says, “There comes a time when we want to wear something unique, something cut from a different cloth. That is when we look to the artist, a creative soul who can stitch and knot and sew or bead a wondrous wearable, and in donning his or her masterpiece, we become a walking work of art ourselves”.

Roxanne Lewis tells The Rickie Report, “My first experience in the art world was in high school, with a teacher who coached me in my love of art, along with my Mother, who worked with oil on canvas as a hobby also.  After graduating from high school, I got married and had 3 children.  I got some time to work with oils on canvas and loved it, but was working and busy with raising my children, which took up much of my time”

In her 20’s,  she met Lawrence Russo, an artist of  international renown, both for his sculptures and oils of canvas.  He won numerous awards, plus gold and silver medals in NYC in international art competitions there.   She shares, “He liked my art work and said he would take me under his wing and teach me.  It was my honor to be his student for two years, along side the one and only other student he mentored.  During this time, he worked with me on my own paintings and I collaborated with him on a large mural in Scranton, PA.”
