Suzanne Redmond, an artist who works with artists and their businesses, has started a podcast called “The Left Brain Artist”. Suzanne interviews one artist every Wednesday, to talk about their beginnings in the art world and how they have created a successful business.  The hour-long interview is filled with practical tips and inspiring information that other artists can use. Every Friday, Suzanne posts a mini bonus episode about various business topics relevant to artists.  A podcast is an online audio program that posts new episodes weekly and can be downloaded and accessed at no charge. Enjoy listening to these accomplished artists who are happy to share the keys to their success with you. “Drawing Basic Portraits, Simplified” By Bernard Hoffman, Is Revolutionary With Step-By-Step Instructions

Bernard Hoffman has taken his life long experience with drawing and painting to write a book to help people who claim they cannot draw, to actually create portraits!  A member of the Portrait Society of America, Hoffman has shown his work at every American Embassy in the world, plus the Whitney Museum of Art, Benjamin Franklin Institute, Metropolitan Museum, and too many to name in this introduction.  The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks of his book, “Drawing Basic Portraits, Simplified”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bernard Hoffman starts off by telling The Rickie Report, “Drawing portraits can be rewarding and fun”.  He has devised typical proportional guides, with a step-by-step tutorial that will make it easy for any beginner or landscape artist to follow. Plus, he clarifies details for artists who want to draw better portraits.

He goes on to say, “No two faces look alike, yet everyone has two eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. They will vary from face to face, so pick your pose and begin sketching!”  He urges us to follow each step carefully, working with light strokes and then moving to darker strokes, continually adjusting our drawing to the individual features of our model.   Bernard stresses the importance of good light and paying strict attention to each minute detail.  He shares, “Draw not only what you see, but incorporate what you learn.  Remember, this is only a starting guide”.  There are many comments from hobbyists to professional artists, who have honed their skills with Bernard’s assistance.  His workbook/textbook shows that learning the relationships of facial details is not only possible, but something you can become proficient in!

 

 

 

Bernard Hoffman has been drawing and painting since elementary school. At age 10, he was awarded a scholarship to The Little Red Schoolhouse art classes in Greenwich Village.  At age 12, he received a scholarship to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the next year, he was accepted to the High School of Music & Art.  He received a scholarship to the School for Art Studies, followed by a scholarship to attend the Pratt Institute.  In addition, he attended classes at the Art Students League, winning many awards and exhibiting his paintings in galleries and museums.

Within months of graduation, Bernard served in the US Navy Air Force during the Korean War, using his special skills for recruitment, training, and illustration of classified Navy Air Force projects.  After his service, Bernard founded Benaul Associates, an art studio in New York City. His company grew into a full strength advertising agency, where he did everything except the bookkeeping. He was also an Art Director & Production Manager for a magazine for 16 years before he retired.

 

 

 

In 1952, Bernard was commissioned to paint 16 original color illustrations to commemorate Benjamin Franklin’s 250th birthday.  They were produced as souvenir stamps for a historical and biographical album describing episodes of Franklin’s life. They found their way into US Embassies around the world as well as to international and national corporations. This achievement was recorded in the US Congressional Record and Mayor Wagner of New York unveiled mural enlargements of these paintings at the New York Art Director’s Club. While reproductions of Bernard’s artistry can be found in textbooks, one is also hanging next to Norman Rockwell’s  “Ben Franklin” picture.  The original paintings are part of a public collection of “The Free Library of Philadelphia”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since his retirement, Bernard has taught portrait painting in Pennsylvania and in Florida.  He is a member of the Portrait Society of America and has received numerous awards including the Department of Parks Art Contest, Society of Illustrators, and National AAA Poster Contest, to name a few.  Bernard’s paintings are part of private and corporate and international collections.

Caren Hackman’s “4 Tips For Completing Projects On Schedule” Are Helpful For Everyone (Not Only Artists)

Award winning fine artist, graphic designer and author, Caren Hackman, shares Four Tips for Completing Projects on Schedule.  The Rickie Report shares these with our readers, knowing that this advice pertains to everyone, not only artists!

My 4 tips for completing projects on schedule

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I like to complete client projects on time or in advance of the deadline. I avoid working on last-minute projects, but, if it is within my power to help out a client I will work on a project with a short timeline. However, I do try to avoid the frantic round-the-clock-all-nighter project mode of work. I don’t think any of us do our best work when we are emotional or sleep deprived. Following are some steps I take to help me complete projects on schedule. Although I’ve described the tasks as being part of a graphic design marketing or visual communications project, the steps can apply to nearly any project.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ONE: Review the entire scope of the project with the client.

TWO: Develop a timeline by breaking the project into phases and setting a deadline for each.

A. In addition to setting a deadline when all work must be complete by me, I set reasonable deadlines for the client to review each phase of the work I turn into them. I include their review time and turnarounds for project modifications in the timeline.

B. If certain tasks are dependent upon the work of others, I take into account this possible extra time.

C. I determine two phases during the project development where I compare project components’ compatibility with the final output requirements. This might involve phone calls to outside vendors such as a printer; a production company for trade show or; an online source where I might want to check placement, browser compatibility and loading time. Checking for compatibility, running a test or trial or submitting a rough concept to those involved in the projects’ production will eliminate last minute unpleasant revelations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

THREE:  Allow ample time for proofreading. Ask someone who has not yet reviewed the project to look at it for substance and clarity. Individuals with an insiders’ familiarity with the project might consider a piece of information common knowledge and thus, overlook explanations that others will require. Occasionally, during multiple revisions of a project, tiny errors can occur such as an incorrect URL or missing phone number. Having an outsider, or member of the target market group review the communications piece will make the end product more effective.

 

FOUR:  Be vigilant about adhering to the timeline. Check often to be certain that all involved are keeping up with the planned goals and their individual timelines for each phase. Reevaluate and troubleshoot, when needed.

Ilene and Rickie’s previous Art Marketing Seminars have taken emerging artists and hobbyists to a new level of professionalism. The information they provide in two sessions will be enhanced by Hugh O’Neill’s experience as a gallerist and international artist. The basic skills and knowledge necessary to take any individual to a more successful level will be shared through power point, hand outs, anecdotal information, suggested reading, sharing of resources and hands-on exercises.

 

 

While the seminars center of interest is on art, we welcome other entrepreneurs and business people to attend. Most of the principals are practical for anyone trying to market their ideas or products.

 

 

The two sessions will be held at En Plein Air International Studios located at 226 Center Street Unit A8 in Jupiter, FL. Pre-registration is required for the $100 two-part seminar. The Artist/Gallery Relationship

The relationship between an artist and gallery is a significant one. The Rickie Report hears from both entities, sharing concerns and questions about behavior and standards.  We look at the nuances that may not be spelled out in a contract and more in this article.  This includes 2D , 3D and wearable art.

 

 

The Artist/Gallery Relationship

 

 

In this article, when we speak of “galleries”, the reader should understand the term to include consignment galleries, vanity galleries, cooperative galleries and traditional galleries.  This also includes outdoor or indoor shows…basically, any place you are exhibiting your artistry.

 

Notification of Your Acceptance

Great news!  

Your artwork has been accepted to be in an exhibit or show!  

Now what?

 

Read every word and every page before you sign a contract!

 

 

  • Do you understand the contract?

 

  • If you have a question, has the issuer of the contract been helpful in explaining your concerns?

 

  • Can you meet the requirements of the contract?

 

  • Is there something you would like to change in the contract?

 

  • Is this acceptable to the issuer?

 

  • If you cannot meet the requirements, it is your obligation to discuss the issues with the gallery or show where your work will be exhibited!

 

  • Mark down important dates: drop off of artwork, reception and pick up of unsold work and date of expected payment for sold work.

 

  • If you decide NOT to sign the contract, it is up to you to inform the gallery or show manager!  Being polite and considerate goes a long way…you never know when you may encounter the same players in the art world again.

 

I’ve Signed A Contract!

What is the first thing you need to do?

 

  • Employ “Rickie’s Two Foot Rule”!  Share your good news with anyone who comes within 2 feet of you!  This is NOT a time to “sell” but to “celebrate”! Share your passion of creativity with everyone!  

 

  • Get your publicity and marketing ducks in a row!  Send out press releases to print and email resources ( including The Rickie Report) – DO NOT WAIT until a few weeks before your public reception, grand opening or event to take place.

 

  • Share your good news in your social media circles and once you have the date (see above), ask THEM to share it with their friends!

 

  • Has the gallery provided postcards marketing the exhibit or show?

 

  • Send them out to your client list, giving them plenty of notice so they can attend!  This is an important part of the marketing process. The gallery is counting on you to follow through!  

 

  • Another thought about sending out postcards: a personal note goes a long way.  Again, it is about the relationship between you and your clients. It is not just about the sale!

 

 

Enjoy The Show

 

Before the exhibit or show opens, touch base with the manager.  What are the gallery’s expectations of the artists during the event?

 

  • Show up on time!

 

  • What is the preferred mode of dress?

 

  • Can you bring a guest?

 

  • Is there a cover charge for guests and other attendees?

 

  • Be respectful of the other attendees.  Not everyone is here to see your work. ( We know, this sounds harsh, but we’re trying to be realistic and helpful).

 

  • Are you expected to make a presentation about your work?  How long will you speak? When will this take place within the reception time frame?

 

  • Is it OK to hand out business cards?  

 

  • Can you have your own sign-in book?

 

  • If you are supposed to bring a beverage or snack to share, check to see what the gallery prefers ( if they always provide a cheese tray, perhaps choosing a different pick-up refreshment is best; have they requested wine or only soft-drinks?)

 

  • How long are you expected to stay?

 

  • Different types of galleries call for you knowing information beyond your own work. Have you done your homework and learned a bit about the other exhibitors’ artistry?

 

  • If someone asks a question and you are unsure of the answer, KNOW who to ask!

 

  • Do we need to tell you? NEVER speak poorly of another piece of artwork! Everyone has different taste in food, fashion and artwork!

 

The Party’s Over And So Is The Exhibit

  • Be prompt when picking up your artwork.  

 

  • Bring a copy of your list of work dropped off with prices.

 

  • If you have a problem in picking up your work at the specified time, contact the gallery manager immediately.

 

  • Send a thank you note to the gallery and manager.  Personal relationship, remember?

 

My Work Sold!  Now What?

 

  • The contract should specify when you will be paid and how much the gallery will keep as commission.

 

  • Be aware of the date you should expect payment and stay in touch with the gallery manager.

 

  • Some galleries cut checks immediately and others only monthly.

 

  • Does the contract specify if the gallery will tell you who the customer is? 

 

 

  • When a non-profit organization asks you for a donation of your artwork, does the contract specify that you will be told who the client is who purchased your work?  The Rickie Report suggests you inquire about this BEFORE signing the contract and possibly adding it in, if it is not mentioned.  It is gracious of you to donate and important for YOUR marketing and art business to know who to add to your client list.

 

 

In the very least, the exhibition or show should be added immediately to your website.

 

 

You forgot to pick up your work

for over a month… Now what?

 

  • Go back and read the contract.
  • Some galleries will charge storage fees. Be prepared to pay.  Remember – they have been caretakers of your work.
  • Some galleries will take possession of your work.  They may choose to be benevolent and return your work or they may, according to the contract, sell your work to benefit a charity.

The first regular meeting of the 2013-2014 season for the Wellington Art Society promises to be a great one, showcasing our many artists and unveiling the calendar filled with events, lectures and artist demonstrations.

 

This evening is a chance for artists and art lovers to hear about the exciting new offerings that the Wellington Art Society has planned for the coming year. Fabulous artwork is on display in the Society’s exhibit space at the Wellington City Hall and the Wellington Community Center. These original works are available for sale and are rotated quarterly. The art society also has ongoing exhibitions at the Wellington Whole Foods that feature art society members for a three month long show.

 

The W.A.S. meeting will be held Wednesday, September 11th, at 6:30pm, in the Greenview Room at the Wellington Community Center, 12150 West Forest Hill Blvd. Refreshments will be served beginning at 6:30pm when we will feature our Member Spotlight and have an opportunity to view their work. Members are asked to bring one piece of art that they created over the summer. There will a raffle with fabulous items perfect for artists and art lovers, which is open to all attendees.

 

The general meeting begins at 7:00PM when the year’s events will be discussed, which includes calls to artists, exciting demonstrations by well-known artists, exhibit opportunities, gallery tours, and outreach to create an even better art community. Once again, WAS will also present ArtFest on the Green, a 2-day event with artist and vendors from around the county.  The event will be held January 25 and 26, 2013 at the Wellington Amphitheater.  More information and applications are available at wellingtonartsociety.blogspot.com

 

The presentation for the first meeting will be by JB Berkow. She has had an unusual background of not only being an internationally known artist, but also an artist that has worked intimately with other artists.  At the age of 26, Berkow founded the cooperative gallery in Washington, DC, Touchstone Gallery.  She also founded Frenchman’s Art Gallery and Studio, Inc. and in 2003, Rosetta Stone Fine Art Gallery in Jupiter.  She has always felt a strong need to mentor and promote other artists. She published a book, “What They Don’t Teach You in Art School”, a culmination of many years of experience and in-depth research. Her books will be available for sale.

 

Founded in 1981, The Wellington Art Society is open to artists of all mediums and patrons of the arts, providing both local and regional artists the platform to share their work, learn more about their craft and serve the community through their art. The Wellington Art Society is open to any resident in Palm Beach County. Membership forms will be available at the Open House if you would like to become a member.

 

A 501(c)(3) charitable organization, its mission is to educate and encourage originality and productivity among its members and area youth through programs designed to further the advancement of cultural endeavors in the western communities.

Caren Hackman Shares Resume Building Tips for Creative Professionals

The Rickie Report originally saw Caren Hackman’s wonderful art work and later discovered her blog.  We invited her to share some tips on resume makeovers for creative professionals.

 

For Caren Hackman, being both a fine artist and a graphic designer gives her a unique perspective as a business woman who is a creative professional.  TRR readers know that we focus on varied aspects of the art world and strongly believe that having a business plan is an essential part of an artist’s strategy to succeed. After reading her July 25th post, “The One Pager”, we contacted Caren and asked her to share some of her expertise with The Rickie Report readers to discuss what an artist’s resume should include.

 “Resume Makeovers for Creative Professionals.”

 

Because artists are creative professionals, an artist’s resume must reflect their creative spirit with flawless visuals.

I started my report by taking an informal survey of fifteen professional artists to see what their resumes looked like. I was hoping to show some terrific creative CVs and offer tips for others in creating their own. Surprisingly, not one of the resumes gave a clue into the forceful essence that drove each artist’s creative work.

The only thing for me to do … resume makeovers!

Because most artists have websites that offer an in-depth view of their work, the résumé, or CV serves as a one-page summary of their career. Three artists volunteered to have me redesign their resumes. My expertise is in graphic design so I chose not to make text changes to the resume content. Although color and images have been added, I’ve retained a simple, easy to read format. In each instance I used similar principles for the design. I tried my best to capture the essence of each artist’s work.

Below are three steps that I took in the redesign process. You can use them to redesign your own resume.

I created a typographical hierarchy with two to three different sizes. Large for the artist’s name, medium for the headers and small for all of the text.

I chose one or two key images or a detail from the artist’s body of work to be represented on the CV.  I studied the best way to have the art and text relate.

In Terre’s I used a section of a pastel and charcoal drawing grid detail as a border.

 

For Anthony’s I wanted to show that he worked as both a fine artist and designer so I used the art to divide the page.

Candace’s work is playful, sweeping and graceful. I decided to have the art “interact” with the text by allowing the text to wrap around protruding portions of the sculpture images.
