Mike Chamberlain – Metal Art

Metal Artwork by Mike Chamberlain

Mike shares with The Rickie Report, “These aluminum panels are part of an ongoing experiment that started about ten years ago at my sign shop, Vital Signs, in Verona, Wisconsin. I use a lot of aluminum on signs I build at the shop. I started scratching and grinding the aluminum to help the aluminum elements on the sign stand out and be more visible. With all of the scrap aluminum I had laying around the shop, I started thinking that I could make some wall art out of the aluminum.

HAEHobeSoundmikechamberlain2

Metal Artwork by Mike Chamberlain

By scratching the surface of the aluminum the light reflects off the surface from different angles creating amazing holographic effects of depth and space on a two dimensional object. These pieces are scratched with an array of different tools I use around the shop. The colored pieces are painted with a translucent tint that I mix into an automotive clear coat. These colors can be intermixed to create millions of different colors. Once dried, they are color-sanded and buffed to a high gloss. These pieces need light to bring out their depth and holographic appearance; with that, they begin to change and start to look different if the light is adjusted from bright to dull.  When looking at these pieces from different angles and with different light intensity, their appearance will begin to change right before the viewer’s eyes”.

Produced by Howard Alan Events and hosted by the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce this popular event will feature 150 local and national artists as well as the finest crafters in the country with a wide array of artistic media. This show will have two separate sections appealing to art enthusiasts and collectors looking to add to their collections as well as festival patrons shopping for affordable crafts and unique gift items. The Fine Arts portion of the event will be located on the North side of the street starting at Bridge Road and Dixie Highway, followed by the crafts section and green market.

Monika Fairchild – Jewelry

Monika Shares, “I am the sole creator of each one of my jewelry designs. The process usually begins by laying out many colorful stones and rare fossils. I move them around until the shapes; colors and textures take on a life of their own, becoming much more as a union than separate elements. The next step is sketching my design idea on paper, adding graceful lines that support the relationship of all pieces. Then each stone gets its own custom bezel made, either out of sterling silver or 14 kt gold bezel wire, which I cut and solder closed and attach onto a flat piece of sterling silver sheet. The thickness of the base varies according to the purpose of the piece of jewelry. For example: earrings are made of lighter gauge, and pendants heavier”.

“I cut shapes out of silver and gold using a hand saw and bend or texture them, mostly with small hand tools like pliers and hammers. Once all elements are attached together through the process of soldering, the job of polishing begins. It is a long, labor intensive and unpleasant process, and it is what differentiates quality work. I use a buffing machine, holding the piece in my hands and pressing against the extremely fast spinning cloth wheel, feeding it with polishing compound every few seconds. Even though I wear a face mask and finger guards and have an exhaust fan, I am still covered with black dirt at the end of the polishing process. The last step is to carefully set the stones in place using a bezel pusher and burnisher. My favorite part of jewelry making process is to see how great my creation looks on the person that has fallen in love with it and the joy it brings to them”.

Brenda explains, “I love to travel, and travel has always been a big inspiration for me personally and professionally. Bohemian in nature, a reincarnated gypsy from days gone by. If I am physically moving – in a car, plane, boat, train – I’m totally happy. I get cabin fever amazingly fast. A day-trip or an art show usually alleviates the feeling of being in one place too long. I am convinced sea water courses through my veins. I pursue my art as a full-time exhibiting artist doing both fine craft and fine art shows, showing both traditional tile and paper mosaics. I also have my work in a few galleries up and down the East Coast”.

“I continue to write as a contributing columnist and features writer at Sunshine Artist magazine, and have had photographs published in Coastal Living and The Sun magazines. I used to freelance as a travel writer and have a couple of book titles under my belt. Always looking for creative opportunities. I love public art, and have done some tile mosaic projects in Ocala and Cedar Key. Feel free to click on over to www.free-range-van.weebly.com to see both the horse I created for Horse Fever in Ocala, 2011, and the van – which is a continuing labor of love”!
