At the workshop, students will enjoy plenty of discussion, practical demonstrations, hands on work and individual instruction. Students are encouraged to bring their own design and use a variety of fusions from the selection Martin brings. The workshop focus is the mosaic process and as each student’s pace is unique – some may not finish. To mitigate the possibility that a student may not complete his project  special fusion kits (new this season) to build specific designs will be available. When you register, you can select a specific kit.

Martin’s engaging style and humor is the highlight of the workshop. In addition to just having fun, students are going to hear Martin’s take on some of the mosaic fundamentals such as andamento, keystoning, grout and other techniques. Martin will also do various demonstrations throughout the workshop.

About Martin Cheek:

Martin Cheek has been creating mosaics professionally for 30 years and has shared his expertise in six best-selling books on this subject.  With a degree in graphic design from Exeter College of Art & Design in the United Kingdom, Martin went on to work in the film industry as an animator where he set up his own production company, Cheeky Films Ltd.  He has worked on award winning films and puppet animation projects including The Wind in the Willows, Paddington Bear, Noddy in Toyland, and Portland Bill.

As a full time professional mosaic artist, Martin spends his time working on commissioned projects for both private and corporate clients that include museums, schools, parks, and hospitals.  Martin teaches workshops throughout the U.S., U.K., New Zealand, Australia, and Europe.

Martin’s latest book, Fused Glass Mosaics, is a good illustration of  the exciting medium of using fused glass mosaics. The text is a rich bestowment of Martin’s detail to order, his passion and humor, and his you-can-do-it encouragement. This book serves as an art course in mosaics, whereby each chapter offers a different stylistic challenge. In fulfilling these projects, the reader will develop their own individual style.

Studio Space for Classes, Workshops and Working On Your Own

Shortly after moving in, Diane and Asia threw a ‘Grand Opening celebration” the highlight was a student art show. The many students that enjoy working in the studio over the last three years brought and displayed their artwork . There was plenty of art (purely for art’s sake) but the functional mosaic art…coasters, trays, lazy susans, house numbers…wow! The variety of mosaic art that has been created in the studio over the last 4 years is amazing!

Functional Mosaic Artwork

Diane has enhanced her mosaic self-education at the Union Square Art Cooperative in NYC and at the Institute of Mosaic Art, Berkeley CA. She has attended workshops with Martin Cheek, Mireille Swinnen, Michelle Petno and Jeff Halverson (some of the best known local and international mosaic artists). Diane’s portfolio is as varied as the application of mosaic art can be.  She is experienced in stained glass, smelt and picassiette. Diane has applied her art to garden items, upcycled art (mosaicking found items to give them new life), commissions for clients (address plaques, store signs), and has often explored her mosaic artistic voice.

Also instructing at the studio is Asia Booth, an award winning mosaic artist of tremendous talent. An avid ‘gamer’, Asia specializes in video game themed art, most of her work features extremely tiny pieces (all hand cut). Asia’s passion for drawing and unique mosaic design is reflected in her art. Her gamer pieces were featured in “A Fractured Perspective” a gallery showing by Luna Mosaics of Orlando. Asia teaches “Intro to Mosaic” and is available during studio hours for students. Asia and Diane recently both placed in the highly competitive Annual McMow Art Glass completion.

In the studio you can buy art, order a custom commission or take classes. The very popular ‘Intro to Mosaic’ day-long workshop provides the basics in mosaic techniques and you go home with your 8”x8’ mosaic wall art. ‘Intro workshop’s are conducted several times a month.  You can also take advantage of the ‘Studio Hours’ where you can work on projects at your own pace. There is a reasonable fee for studio hours (which includes use of the tools and materials in the studio).

VISITING   INSTRUCTORS:

The highlight of the 2017 season will be a 2 day workshop by Martin Cheek, an internationally known mosaic artist. He has been teaching for over 20 years and is the author of several bestselling books. Martin Cheek incorporates his own glass fusions into his mosaic art and will share that process during the 11-12 February workshop at the studio. Details on this workshop can be found on the studio’s Facebook page or by calling Diane.

Special classes by mosaic artists and artists of other disciplines are being scheduled for 2017. Francesca will be presenting an ‘Opus and Andamento Workshop’. Opus and andamento are time honored techniques used in traditional mosaics. Francesca will review traditional applications and introduce a modern approach, discuss tessellation, patterns, negative/positive space and the student will put this instruction into practice on their own project under Francesca’s guidance. This is an excellent opportunity for advanced beginners or intermediate mosaic artists to delve into some of the more advanced techniques of the art.
The studio will be participating in the St. Lucie County Rock and Gem Club Show at the Martin County Fairgrounds on October 22-23. They are particularly excited to be featured as the “Artist in Residence” at the Ground Floor Farm of Stuart, where their art will be featured for the months of December and January. The studio will present a special stepping stone workshop during their residency.

With Randy Wardell

These artists were inspired by the jazz music of their time, often listening to jazz while creating their works. We’ll follow their lead and have some fine jazz playing in the classroom studio to inspire our own Glasspressive content.

Randy will describe and demonstrate a number of decorative glass techniques that are essential for this process including frit stenciling, stringer shaping, wet noodles, powder smears, sifting, stick lighting, cold combing, flyspecking, plus many more. Shanon and the team at McMow Art Glass have earned a place among Florida’s great retailers.”

With $200 and a dream, Materio and her husband, Phil, founded McMow Art glass in 1976. Over the years, the family-owned-and-operated business has grown from a 700-square-foot garage to occupy 10,000 square feet of studio, retail, and manufacturing space on Dixie Highway. Fueled by a passion for what they do, Materio and her team have earned respect in their community and throughout the art glass world.

Both Materio and her husband have served on numerous boards, including the Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency, the West Palm Beach South End Neighborhood Association, and West Palm Beach Arts in Public Places. McMow Art Glass and its employees support a wide variety of charitable organizations, with ongoing commitments to Adopt-a-Family for each holiday, and to the Quantum House for families whose children are receiving treatment in Palm Beach County for serious medical conditions.

The Florida Retailer of the Year Award, presented by FRF since 1999, honors retailers who blend sound business practices with commitments to their communities, customers and employees. The award is open to both members and non-members of the non-profit trade association. A selection panel made up of small business owners and other retail experts ranks nominees based on their scores in several categories measuring community service and business acumen.

From fusing or melting glass to mosaics and bead making, all 16 McMow Art Glass employees are dedicated to passing these art forms on to future generations. The diversity of McMow’s customers has helped the business grow, and people of all ages and from all walks of life take classes at the shop. Others come for group tours, and McMow hosts customer field trips to galleries and museums to promote the glass arts and further clients’ education. Customers shop for products and supplies, or buy finished pieces. Employees and students are allowed to sell their creations at the studio.

“We don’t see dollar signs when a person walks through the door,” said Materio. “We see a person who is going to ask questions and need help with something. Our customers have really responded to this level of care and attention.”

While classes help drive retail sales, the company is well-known for creating custom art glass for places of worship, as well as individuals. Among the clientele was the late Italian designer Gianni Versace, with whom Materio worked closely to create art glass installations for his famous South Beach mansion.

Materio was nominated by her daughter, Taylor, who works at McMow along with her brother, P.J. Through social media and various unique marketing strategies, Materio credits Taylor with introducing McMow and the glass arts to a new generation and “taking us to the next level.”
