Jo Ann Nava calls herself a Contemporary Folk Artist. She says “My art is an appreciation of the simple daily experience and the rituals we create to celebrate and validate our existence”, about ” milk and nurturing, the affirmation of birth and the rituals we celebrate, the sanctity of wildlife and the reverence of aging”. She was born and raised in the South Bronx, New York, which she describes as “ akin to living in a John Sloan painting; with fire escapes, clothes lines and stick ball”. She discovered the world of art through visits to the Metropolitan and Natural History Museums with her mother, and then in Chicago, spending time at the Art Institute and the Field Museum, where she “developed a mutual admiration for contemporary artists and ancient artisans”. Both came into play when she moved to South Florida in 1981 and began designing textiles, murals and faux finishes for the interior design trade.

As head artist and designer for Surface Art Inc., her hand painted textiles graced the homes and businesses of prominent private and commercial clients. For 15 years she was the resident artist for Twist Nightclub of Miami, where she transformed the South Beach hot spot each year with themes such as Pompeii, Picasso, Pollack, Tibetan temple, the Audubon Room and ancient Greek pottery painting. The combination of studying these many masters and years spent restoring and reproducing milk paint finishes for 18th century Swedish furniture heavily influenced materials used in her contemporary art. Her palette and application are instantly recognizable.

“Walk The Plank” by Jo Ann Nava

Jo Ann has been showing her work in South Florida since the early 1980’s. In her first solo exhibition, “Cookies & Milk”, in Fort Lauderdale in 2006, familiar images were simplified and oversized. Milk, she notes, is the unifying human experience, which spans all times and cultures. Her next series, “Happy Birthday to You and You’, continued the theme of life affirming innocence with large paintings of candle lit cakes and a sculptural installation of children celebrating together. “Living Treasures”, her paintings of older vital Americans, were done with milk paints, house paints and varnishes used in furniture painting and murals to give the work an old world palette. House paint as a medium, she says, brings a harmony to the eye of what we see in our environment.

Jo Ann recently relocated to Lake Worth, and had a solo exhibition at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County in January, 2016. She now has a retrospective show of 30 years of work at Coral Springs Museum of Art, through November 19, 2016.

ABOUT ART SALONS:

Our discussions cover the gamut of contemporary art themes, including conceptual, cultural, socio/political, environmental, race and gender focused and aesthetic practices, the materials and techniques used to convey these ideas, and where we fit into the world of contemporary conceptual art. Art Salons also offer the opportunity to explore the practical side of being an artist, enhance professional development, share useful resources, and network with other artists. Elle Schorr, a well known artist / photographer who spends much of her time at museums and art exhibits locally and internationally, has been facilitating the salons, hosted by the Armory Art Center, since 2012. All are welcome to join in these timely explorations of trends in contemporary art and individual artists’ work.

BIG NEWS for Lake Park, FL!!!!

Here is the latest from AJ Brockman, “The Brewhouse Gallery has so much good news flying around on a daily basis that things sometimes get lost. That being said, this week marks one of the most incredible opportunities we could have ever hoped for. This is not a joke so please prepare yourselves, We have purchased an entire CITY BLOCK! That’s right, the team behind Brewhouse Gallery has taken the next step in revitalizing Lake Park and building something special by taking over ownership of the whole building. This includes bringing back the Mos’Art Theater (or as some of you may remember it the Kelsey Club). At this point we are all in… All in because we believe in what this area is becoming, the amazing support we get from all of you every day, the staff (or family as we like to say) behind us, and the ultimate vision of building a community”.

“Now, the real work begins. The sort of work that will ultimately change history. In this work we need your help… So please spread the word on what we are doing, scream it if you have to. We have a bunch of retail spaces available and we would love to hear what sort of project you might be interested in bringing to the scene. Keep an eye out for some brainstorming sessions and community forms in which we want feedback from all of you. We truly could have never imagined this journey and outcome in only a few short years, but it’s possible because of all of you and that can’t be said enough. The future is now, let’s do this!!”

World Renown Artist, David Hayes’ Sculptures in Northwood

Thirteen large steel sculptures by noted Connecticut artist David Hayes will grace the Northwood Village shopping district of West Palm Beach for a year.  Northwood Village, located in northern West Palm Beach, is an oasis of restaurants, galleries and pedestrian friendly shops. The district has enjoyed a resurgence as a foodie destination in recent years, capped now by an exuberant display of outdoor sculpture. The Rickie Report suggests you stop by a little earlier for that dinner reservation, to take in all that Northwood has to offer!

NorthwoodA&W - Six Month Date Card_5x5_v4 C

Jon Ward, Executive Director of the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), states that “This brings an exciting, world-class display of modern sculpture to one of West Palm Beach’s most charming neighborhood shopping centers.” Northwood Village, located in northern West Palm Beach, is an oasis of restaurants, galleries and pedestrian friendly shops. The district has enjoyed a resurgence as a foodie destination in recent years, capped now by an exuberant display of outdoor sculpture.

The artwork will be sited outside of stores and shops in Northwood Village. Sculptures will be strategically placed on sidewalks, open spaces, grassy fields and courtyards where people walk on their way to work and shop. Artist David Hayes previously commented: “I like placing sculpture where people may view them on their own terms. It is important to bring artwork to public areas where anybody may enjoy it at their leisure.”

Son of the sculptor and exhibit curator John Hayes says that the exhibited artwork is part of a traveling museum exhibition and planning for this tour has been going on for over a year. Hayes worked closely with Jon Ward, who previously served on the Board of the Florida Council for Arts and Culture and had spearheaded major outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the region.

The sculptures are all created from welded steel plate and are designed for long-term public art exposure. The show consists of a variety of the artists’ different phases, including some screen pieces as well as iconic totems and even one hanging piece. Hayes selected to paint the pieces either in a semi-gloss black finish or bright multi-colors, depending on the feeling of the sculpture. The exhibition enjoys strong support from the community, including the village’s numerous residents and store owners.

The late artist enjoyed a six-decade long reputation as one of America’s great contemporary sculptors and has work included in the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum plus over 100 institutional collections across the country. He also designed jewelry for Pierre Cardin while living in Paris.

Packing Boxes for Support our Troops

Palm Beach Troop Support is focused on helping returning wounded and disabled vets. PBTS volunteer efforts started 12 years ago, sending letters and care packages to friends and family. Now PBTS takes on large scale projects such as rehabbing vets old homes and recently purchased a new home for a local vet in need.  The volunteers of PBTS donate their labor and their hearts, as they take time to sit down and listen.  “We meet many fascinating heroes from as far back at WWII.”

Palm Beach Troop Support will continue to help as many of our heroes as often as they can. PBTS would like to thank their local business partners and all the folks that donate their financial and physical support. Please help us help our wounded that continue to return every day. This is the least we can do for our freedoms they so gallantly protected.

The Urban Arts Lofts (UAL) consists of 12, brand new, two-story live/work lofts in the heart of the City. The three essential elements of this federally funded project included: style, sustainability and affordability. The Urban Arts Lofts provides workspace along with affordable housing for artists.
