Pottery by Cynthia Zmetronak

Cynthia Zmetronak tells The Rickie Report, “I have been working in clay nearly as long as I can remember.” Having a mother who dabbled in clay, and a father who built her first wheel helped nurture her inner mud pie girl. She was also fortunate enough to grow up during a time when art classes (including clay), were part of public education, from elementary school through high school. Her post public school education involved the arts. College provided a clay studio with unlimited access and she was hooked on clay. She then went on to earn a Masters in Art Education and teach in both private and public schools, where clay became an important part of her curriculum.

With a newly purchased wheel and a used kiln in a garage, Cynthia started West Wind Pottery in the 70’s. “Utilitarian and whimsical decorative pieces are my passion”. Although her style has evolved and become more refined over the years, she still makes a line of comical canine and feline utilitarian pieces. “These pieces reflect the humor I find living with a large rescue dog and several domesticated feral cats.”

The last few years she has been studying at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. “I chose Penland due to its unique immersive concentration study program and staff of master instructors.” Most of the year I am at my home studio in Parkland, Florida and several weeks of the year (during warmer weather) my new studio in Ontario, Canada.

“Working with clay makes the difference in my day. How you will interact with my pottery?… a lid that fits, a teapot that pours, a mug that feels good in your hand, a bowl that is used for your table, are part of my thought process and studio practice. My enjoyment and fulfillment as a maker, comes from people using and enjoying my ware. As a committed lifelong learner, I will always be a student and a teacher.” I enjoy sharing my joy for making things from clay with my students. Some of us are makers…..that is how I describe myself….”

Cynthia is proud to be showing her work at Artisans on the Avenue in Lake Worth, Florida and  The Goodyear Cottage Gallery on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

One-Of-A-Kind Pottery by John McCoy

John’s pottery is classically inspired, elegant with a contemporary twist. As John says” I like to make pottery that will get used every day. A piece can sit on a shelf and look pretty, but it comes alive when it is a part of our daily life.” People are starting to appreciate handmade objects once again. They realize that a beautifully cooked meal is enhanced by being served on a handmade plate or serving dish. Every day should be a special occasion.”
