In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), Artisans on the Ave in downtown Lake Worth is featuring two artists who are totally in sync with our lovely planet!

“Connected” by Tracy Rosof-Petersen

Tracy Rosof-Petersen (EarthArtistsClayStudio.com), who is as warm as she is talented, has a passion to create pieces that celebrate our humanness, have emotional substance and utilize sustainable materials. Her new clay and sculpted tile “Connected” series features ornamentation that intertwines with the human form. Be it a vase, a vessel, a platter, this series speaks to the human relationships with each other and with our natural surroundings. Her work is continually evolving and she often mixes a sense of humor with her considerable skill in many of her creations. As with all of her pieces, they are sturdy, durable and truly nice to look at!

Wood carved Owl by Herb Brofsky

Herb Brofsky spent his career practicing dentistry, but always had a love of the arts. A collector of paintings, clocks and antiques, upon retirement, he moved to Cape Cod, MA. Continually observing the activity at the bird feeders by his kitchen window, his growing fascination with their movements led him to a new venture. Throughout his newfound bird carving career, he has studied under a variety of carvers. Using mostly bass and tupelo woods, his pieces explode with color from the acrylic paint and various washes applied to his little gems. He has so enjoyed carving birds, that he’s migrated (no pun intended) to other animals – horses, deer, fish and ducks. He is having so much fun – and winning blue ribbons at competitions – that Herb is one happy retiree.

Artisans on the Ave is located at 630 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth.

In a house with – at a minimum – two dogs, three cats and any number of other rescue animals, you’ll find Cynthia hard at work creating whimsical, functional pottery in black and white. Proficient in working with clay as well as casting glass, she has been “playing with pottery” since childhood. Cynthia has taken her passion to new heights and has parlayed her expertise into teaching others.

A lifelong learner and creator, she constantly seeks to expand her technical and artistic skills. Recently, she participated in a creative artist community immersion program at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. “Making pottery, glass casting and teaching are passions”, says Cynthia. You can definitely see that passion, along with her sense of humor and clear love of all things furry, when you view her art. Mugs, dishes, clocks, you name it – her artwork is sure to make you smile – animal lover or not.

“Making pottery, glass casting and teaching are my passions,” she says. A teacher as well as a potter, Cynthia believes it’s important for potters to start with a good foundation by learning basic building techniques. She loves to embellish her pieces by stamping, carving and altering the surfaces, and encourages students to start to channel their ideas once they have achieved that solid technique.

Cynthia began her love affair with fashioning the earth making mud pies in her backyard at age 4. Recognizing her interest and potential, her parents, also artistic, made sure she attended art school on the weekends. She first learned the wheel in 7th grade in New Jersey, and went on to earn multiple degrees and certifications in both art and teaching.

Passionate about clay, Cynthia is equally passionate about learning. She continues not only to give workshops, but to take them as well. Cynthia earned her BA in Education at Montclair University of Upper Montclair NJ; her MA Art Education and MA Education Technology at FAU. She ‘s attended the Penland School of Crafts, Haystack Mt. School of Crafts, and Arrowmont School, and has studied with Cynthia Bringle, Gay Smith, Susan Feagan, Ronan Peterson, Jeff Oestrike, Sunshine Cobb, Tom Spleth, Deborah Horrell, Birdie Boone, and Matt Repsher.  In addition to being the owner of Westwind Pottery/Pottery-E, she has taught art in the Broward County Public Schools, Parkland, and ceramic sculpture at Penland. She is the past president of the Ceramic League of Palm Beach and the Broward College Potter’s Guild.

3D Mixed Media Artwork by Doris Gilden

Doris Gilden’s background in Fashion Design and Interior Design inspires her to bring her creative skills to her passion for working on Greenware, Bisque and Clay.  She brings fantasy to her one-of-a-kind creations, incorporating lace, beads, sequins, crystals, mirrors and other decorations to what she conceives to be her blank canvas.

Doris is inspired by past and present trends and fashion from the 1920’s to the future. She portrays from all backgrounds and she is always looking for new inspirations. Her works may make the perfect centerpiece around which an entire concept may evolve, or, they may be the ideal accessories that have the ability to unify the whole creative design.

Functional, handmade Art: Mug by Cynthia Zmetronak

Cynthia Zmetronak has been working in clay nearly as long as she can remember. Having a mother who dabbled in clay, and a father who built her first wheel helped nurture her inner mud pie girl. She was also fortunate enough to grow up during a time when art classes (including clay), were part of public education, from elementary school through high school. Her post public school education involved the arts. College provided a clay studio with unlimited access and she was hooked on clay. She then went on to earn a Master’s in Art Education and teach in both private and public schools, where clay became an important part of her curriculum.

“Utilitarian and whimsical decorative pieces are my passion”. Although her style has evolved and become more refined over the years, she still makes a line of comical canine and feline utilitarian pieces.  Cynthia is proud to be showing her work at Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth and looks forward to meeting visitors.

Handmade Pottery by Cynthia Zmetronak

“These pieces reflect the humor I find living with a large rescue dog and several domesticated feral cats.” She says “working with clay makes the difference in my day”. How you will interact with my pottery; a lid that fits, a teapot that pours, a mug that feels good in your hand, a bowl that is used for your table, are part of my thought process and studio practice. My enjoyment and funfillment as a maker, comes from people using and enjoying my ware.  As a committed lifelong learner, I will always be a student and a teacher.”
