Inaugural Plein Air Competition in Delray Beach, FL

Artists can register and apply at: www.PleinAirPalmBeach.com/CallForEntry

This event is part of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the Delray Art League and hosted by the Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square in Delray Beach on their 25th Anniversary.

Artists will have the opportunity to enjoy not only painting, but sharing their creativity with the public. To the viewer, this art form can be very exciting because it invites you into the sight, sound, and even smell of the artists’ world. The competitive side of the process pits artists against each other for prizes to be awarded at the end of a day of painting “en plein air” (outside on location).

Judges for the event will be Marisa Pascucci, Curator at the Boca Museum of Art; Violeta de la Serna, Regional Sales Manager for Plein Air Magazine; and Michele Byrne, Nationally Renown Plein Air Artist and Art Educator.

The Competition: February 26, 2015:

  • 8 to 9 am: Artists check in and stamping of canvases at the Crest Theater at Old School Square at 51 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, FL.
  • After check-in, artists may paint anywhere in the downtown area of Delray Beach. That includes the area within 4 blocks north or south of East Atlantic Avenue from Swinton Avenue to the Ocean Beach
  • Artists will be able to choose their own location from a thoughtfully compiled list of suggestions. Artists must paint within the competition boundaries and without the assistance of photographs. Any medium, except photography will be accepted.
  • 3-4 pm: Competing artists can turn in up to two framed, ready to hang artworks which will be displayed on the artist easel(s) under the Big Top Tent at Old School Square. Artworks must be completed by 3 pm and on display by 4 pm
  • 4:30 pm: Exhibit, awards and sale will take place in the Tent Area

The Plein Air Painting Locations:

Each artist will be given a map that delineates the competition boundaries and suggested painting locations for those artists unfamiliar with the area. In case of rain, there will be a list of covered locations where artists are invited to paint. Locations include marinas, historic buildings and monuments, gardens, architecture, ocean, intra-coastal waterway views, small shops and much more.

The Awards:

Cash awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place, Juror’s Recognition and Honorable Mention Awards Additional awards may be presented at the committee’s discretion.

Entry Deadline – January 30th , 2015

Exhibit continues through March 23rd.

Bill Benjamin grew up in Palm Beach, the eldest son of William Benjamin, II, of Southampton and New York and Odette de Bruniere, of Paris, France. Bill’s mother was an accomplished artist. Besides his parents’ encouragement and his mother’s example, Bill counts his education at the Choate School and particularly the Cosnard course on the history of French art as major early influences of his lifelong interest in the Impressionist style of painting.

After studying Fine Arts at Tulane University in New Orleans, Bill worked primarily in the marine construction industry, including a year spent in Hawaii at the Naval Base in Pearl Harbor. The Eighties saw Bill’s return to Palm Beach and his art career, which was well received within the community, with gallery shows and many private and commercial clients for both works in oil on canvas and murals, particularly featured in Jennifer Ash’s book, ‘Private Palm Beach’.

Bill’s paintings feature prominently his interest in plein air and marine subjects with an impressionist flair. Please join us for this nostalgic exhibit of old Florida.  For more information contact:www.webbergallery.com or call 561-582-1045.
