National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) Invites You To “Crossing Boundaries” Exhibition

The National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) knows a lot about crossing boundaries. As the oldest professional women’s fine arts group in the nation, established in 1889 to empower, support and encourage women artists, breaking down barriers was and remains the name of the game.  “Crossing Boundaries” unites NAWA National and NAWA Florida Chapter with a multi media juried exhibition.  The Free, Public Opening Reception takes place on Friday, December 9th at the Armory Art Center.  The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.  In addition to this excellent exhibition, NAWA’s 6” x 6” Scholarship Fundraiser is being held ONLY at the Opening Reception.

Early groundbreakers like Mary Cassatt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and later, Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel and Judy Chicago were just some of the notables that wouldn’t accept exclusion from the male-dominated world of art and art makers. As the first regional chapter in the country, the Florida Chapter is joining forces with the National association in an exciting new juried exhibit at the Armory Art Center, Montgomery Hall, 1700 Park Avenue, in West Palm Beach, December 10th through the 29th. A reception will be held on Friday, December 9, from 6-8 pm, and Awards will be given (First Prize $100, Second Prize $75, Third Prize $50 and two Honorable Mentions $25 each).

By showcasing a number of mediums, including painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage and mixed media pieces, the show will be crossing boundaries in its vision and conceptual approach as well. A number of prominent local artists will be exhibiting their works. Among them are Beth Scher, the president of the Florida Chapter, as well as Carol Staub, Grace Fishenfeld, and Janice Cohen, a past president. An added benefit to the public will be an online exhibit available for viewing after the opening reception. Mark your calendars—this promises to be a memorable arts collaboration.

In addition to this excellent exhibition, NAWA’s 6” x 6” Scholarship Fundraiser is being held only at the Opening Reception on December 9th, 6 – 8 PM. Artist members and art students from the Dreyfoos School of the Arts have created artworks on 6” x 6” canvases, which will go on sale for $50 each. The proceeds will benefit three young women from the 2015 Dreyfoos graduating class with college scholarships.

The Florida Chapter of NAWA, established in 1995, was also comprised of exceptional women of vision. Liana Moonie of Palm Beach, a past president of the National organization and Madeline Weiss, the first president of the Florida Chapter set a high standard. Both groups, National and Florida, share the same vision. And those wishing to become part of the Florida Chapter’s continuing work must first be juried into the National organization headquartered in New York City.
