The students who will be receiving scholarships this year are Isabella Mayman of Fusion Academy, Stella Martinelli of G-Star School of the Arts, and Jakira Julbe of Royal Palm Beach High School. The scholarships will be presented by WAS Scholarship Chair, Barry Stefan. Each scholarship recipient will display their artwork and share their process, as well as their future plans.

The Wellington Art Society (WAS) has been supporting the advancement of the arts in the Palm Beach County community since 1981 with the intent to encourage young artists to pursue careers in the fine arts, provide programming that expands art in public places, and make art accessible within the community daily.

The WAS Scholarship Program was established in 2001 to provide scholarships to talented young artists for art related College and University expenses and tuition costs.  Over the past twenty-two years, WAS has awarded over $120,000 in scholarships to some of the brightest and most creative students within our community. Past recipients of the WAS Scholarship have gone on to become educators, illustrators, authors, curators, artistic directors, professional artists and art advocates.

 

 

 

 

 

 

To support the Scholarship Program, WAS relies solely upon money raised from donations, membership dues, monthly raffles, artist exhibitions, municipal art shows, and commissions.       LYNN   DOYAL  

“An  Artist’s  Journey  Discovering  Public  Art”

 

 

Lynn Doyal blends contemporary design with a reverence for the techniques of the past.  She incorporates paint, hand stitching and beading, collage, and digital technology in her works to create vibrant, textural pieces.  Digital photographs of her artwork can then be transferred onto a variety of surfaces such as glass, metal, canvas, tile, or vinyl, allowing for expansive reproductions as public art pieces. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

She tells The Rickie Report, “My artwork … provides that ‘breath’ in the course of a person’s day which means a great deal to me.”  Her life-sized originals let the viewer marvel at the intricate detail of Doyal’s mixed media pieces, while her large-scale public art pieces are a captivating, surreal experience.

 

 

 

 

 

In 1979, Doyal received her degree in Fine Art from the University of South Florida. After working in the corporate realm, she started her own company, Signature Chocolates, providing premiums and incentives for corporations, hotels and cruise lines. Since 2011, she has been exhibiting her art in festivals, shows, and galleries.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Over the past 6 years, Doyal’s interest in public art has motivated her to serve as an apprentice to a nationally recognized public artist, as well as volunteer in Palm Beach County Art in Public Places, to gain the perspectives of the many individuals and agencies that need to work in concert together to create, fabricate and install public artworks. She explains, “my overall approach to public art is to beautify and surprise.”  Doyal’s current projects include “Word Patterns” which explores the patterns in word search puzzles, and a Portrait Ministry, in which she creates portraits as a way to encourage and uplift others.

Cynthia Zmetronak began her artistic journey by creating delightfully tactile mud pies as a small child. She continued to develop her skills with clay at Girl Scouts as well as in the wonderful art programs in the New Jersey Public Schools System. She went on to earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art Education with a concentration in Ceramics from Montclair University and Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Her passion for teaching led to a career teaching art to students from age 4 to 99. A life-long-student herself, Cynthia’s retirement only fueled her passion for learning, as she pursued clay-based workshops online and in person. She has studied at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado and Penland School of Crafts where she also earned a winter residency.

Locally, Cynthia is the current Vice President of the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches and an alumni and active member of the FAU Potters Guild. In addition, she teaches at the Boca Raton Museum of Art School and the Levis JCC Sandler Center in Boca Raton. She says, “I enjoy teaching students how to manipulate an ancient material and make an original piece of their own.” When she is not teaching, she can be found creating in her home studio in Parkland, Florida or her summer studio in Canada. Cynthia believes in using her art to make a difference. Because of her love of animals, she has held fund raising events to help organizations providing care for wildlife affected by wildfires in both the US and Australia. The proceeds from the sale of her pottery at these events have been used to support organizations such as the UC Davis Burn Unit for Animals, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Wombat Rescue and Koala Rescues.

Another way that Cynthia and her students give back to the community is through an organization called Empty Bowls. In February, FAU Potters Guild is holding an Empty Bowls event where students, staff and alumni will be donating their ceramic bowls for purchase with soup and bread. Proceeds will be split between the Caring Kitchen in Delray Beach and The Tri- County Animal Shelter of Palm Beach County, helping to feed both our two- and four-legged friends. To see her work, visit Cynthia’s upcoming exhibition during the annual JCC show and sale, beginning on March 9th at the Sandler Center. She will also have works displayed in the Sandler Center Gallery. She also exhibits her work twice a year in a show for alumni, staff and students of FAU. Their next show and sale will be in May. Carl Stoveland grew up in New York near the Catskill Mountains and found his passion for photography while hiking along the many trails and streams near his home.  His father spent his entire career working in photo labs and his mom as an oil painter and watercolorist. Naturally, Stoveland was immersed in fine art his whole life. He says, “While the other neighborhood kids were playing football in the street, my folks sent me to ceramics camp…. Creativity and play have been strongly connected for me ever since.”

 

 

 

Stoveland’s primary medium for many years was photography. About 20 years ago, he started playing with watercolor, and since moving to Florida six years ago, he has been exploring many different mediums including watercolor, gouache, urban sketching with casein, and even a little film making. Stoveland’s current passions include a variety of photo and painting media, along with urban sketching, and teaching.

He has been awarded several artist residencies, including most recently Dry Tortugas National Park. In 2022, he was awarded Best in Show in the Florida Showcase at The Box Gallery. He has also Co-Founded the Lake Worth Beach Urban Sketchers Group and has a podcast called “IAMLAKEWORTH”.

Inspired is going on now through February 21, 2023, at the Wellington Village Hall located at 12300 Forest Hill Blvd in Wellington. Images runs from now until March 21, 2023, at the Wellington Community Center at 12150 Forest Hill Blvd, Wellington. 

 

 

 

 

The public is invited to the opening reception celebrating both exhibitions on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 pm. Two venues – one great night! Meet the artists and vote for your favorite artwork. There will be door prizes and refreshments to enjoy.

Born and raised in New York City’s East Harlem, Ralph Papa has had a life-long fascination with drawing and painting. His natural talent led him to study art and architecture at Queens College and City College of New York. He also spent his evenings painting with the Art Students League. By the early 1980’s, Papa was regularly painting en plein air in the Hudson Valley and Long Island Hamptons and later in Southeast Florida. In 2003, he discovered a passion for teaching and began offering drawing, painting and plein air workshops throughout Palm Beach County.

In addition to being a visual artist, Papa is also an art activist through his work with local art organizations. He is co-founder of Plein Air Palm Beach, and a Signature Member and Past President of the Artists Guild of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Papa also has painted in France and Italy and has been instrumental in Boynton Beach becoming a “Sister City” with Farindola in the Abruzzo Region of Italy.

A prolific painter, Papa’s subjects range from real and imagined themes, figurative, portraits and plein air painting. He says, “I’m more fascinated with the actual process of creating an artwork, finding it energizing and even more fulfilling than arriving at the end product of the finished work.”

The Wellington Art Society (WAS) features a presentation on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 by stained glass artist Marcia Greene. Marcia is part of a therapeutic treatment team that encourages and guides clients to use various artistic mediums to create their own works of art to work through their issues. On Tuesday, April 26 you are invited to a free Opening Reception for “Dazzle” ( at Wellington City Hall) and “Love 4 Art” (at the Wellington Community Center). Two venues – one great night- including a Demo by Heather Bergstrom and art sale!  Proceeds help fund WAS Scholarship and Outreach Programs. WAS knows how to express itself!  Are you a member yet? Stained glass artist Marcia Greene is originally from New York City. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts with an emphasis on sculpture and jewelry design from SUNY Albany, NY in 1971. When Marcia began working with glass in 1978, she found it to be the ideal medium for her, as it incorporated the three-dimensional aspect of sculpture with the detail and glitter of jewelry making, and she has made it the focus of her art ever since. Besides utilizing thousands of types of glass, Marcia enhances many pieces with metal accents and embellishments and other media such as geodes, crystals, stones, and shells. Marcia says, for her, “design inspiration is everywhere: nature, real life, photos, [my own] imagination,” and her style can run the gamut from Victorian to modern abstract, making each work a different and fascinating experience.

In addition to being an artist, Marcia is a Registered Nurse Board Certified in Psychiatry and Mental Health and currently works in a local Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facility. Marcia is part of a therapeutic treatment team that encourages and guides the clients with substance abuse and mental health issues to use various artistic mediums to create their own works of art to work through their issues. She believes that art and the act of creating has a healing effect on people and is grateful to be able to use her knowledge and talents to help others.

Two    venues    –    ONE    great   night!

 

 

Meet the artists and vote for your favorite artwork. There will be door prizes and refreshments to enjoy. See a live demo by acrylic artist, Heather Bergstrom. Boutique items by WAS members will be available for purchase during the reception. All artwork hanging in the exhibitions is for sale and a portion of the proceeds goes toward WAS Scholarship and Outreach Programs.

 

Both art exhibits will be open daily to the public throughout the spring season. “Love 4 Art” runs NOW – May 17 at the Wellington Community Center. “Dazzle” runs from NOW – July 19 at Wellington City Hall. The Wellington Art Society (WAS) features a presentation on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 by Joyce Brown, Director of Flamingo Clay Studio – Clay, Glass, Metal and Stone Gallery in Lake Worth, FL.  Joyce sees artistic expression in all of life, and uses her creativity and experience to create businesses and organizations which use art to support peace and social justice issues. The public is invited to this free event at the Wellington Community Center where the new exhibit , “Love 4 Art” featuring ten WAS artists is showing NOW through May, 17, 2022. WAS invites you to the virtual exhibit, “Flying South”, available NOW through March 31st. Visitors can view artwork one of several ways, including moving themselves around the exhibit using the arrows that appear on screen or by using the cursor. A guided tour is also available as an option. Proceeds from sales support WAS Scholarship Fund. The Rickie Report shares the details and some sneak peeks.

Artist, Joyce Brown

 

 

Joyce Brown is the director of Flamingo Clay Studio – Clay, Glass, Metal and Stone Gallery in Lake Worth, Florida. Her earliest childhood memories include drawing on the walls, the floor and even her own body at every opportunity. She felt compelled to decorate whatever was at hand. Joyce’s father gave her a set of oil paints which she used to create copies of the artworks that were hung in her home. She painted copies of Covarrubias, Picasso, Renoir and Degas. Her interest in art continued to grow and she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts as well as a Master of Education/Master of Fine Arts from Temple University, Tyler School of Fine Arts.

Joyce shared her love for fine arts through her many years of teaching students of all ages and abilities, holding Certifications for Teacher of Art K-12 and Teacher of Neurologically Impaired and Brain Injured Children. She also was a member of the Germantown Pottery Guild for over 35 years, where she developed a heart for social conscience. She sees artistic expression in all of life, and uses her creativity and experience to create businesses and organizations which use art to support peace and social justice issues. Joyce says, “When [these] issues took precedence…, I marched and marched making buttons and posters to enhance the efforts of the movement[s]”. Some of her pet projects over the years include Swords into Plowshares, The Blushing Zebra (a non-profit coffee house), Germantown Women’s Y, and WISDOM – Education of Women with HIV/AIDS. Virtual   Art   Show “Flying  South”

The Wellington Art Society is pleased to announce a virtual art show called “Flying South” is open now through March 31, 2022. This exhibit features ten artists and 48 original works of art by WAS members, including photography, digital art, mixed media on hand-made paper and an array of paintings using various mediums.  All artwork is for sale and a portion of the proceeds goes toward WAS Scholarship and Outreach Programs.

Flying South Virtual Art Show is a free on-line event which will be presented through Kunstmatrix, which is a unique and innovative platform that enables artists to create beautiful and realistic 3D versions of their artwork, displayed in a sophisticated virtual exhibition space. Visitors can view artwork one of several ways, including moving themselves around the exhibit using the arrows that appear on screen or by using the cursor.
