Harriet says, “My ‘Women who Change the World’ portrait series is an ongoing, ever-growing body of work that intends to celebrate women who have made permanent contributions to society. These accomplishments are vast and transdisciplinary, from literary to performing visual arts, from judicial and legal activism to the changing ideals of feminine beauty, and more. As an artist, I purposely select my subjects for their depth and barrier-breaking leadership. These multiple portraits are intended to resonate together, creating one memorable visual voice of strength, intention and dedication. In addition to these portraits, my wildlife-themed metal and painted metal sculptures will be available.”

Photography by Samuel Spear, Jr.

Samuel Spear, Jr. is a former New York based computer consultant who first picked up a camera in the early 1970s.  He tells The Rickie Report, ” For many years, as soon as I saved enough, I bought a plane ticket going somewhere,” he said, describing his first love — travel.  I have always been a traveller and the photos were incidental.  I had a position that allowed me access to air travel and I took advantage of  the opportunity.  Unfortunately I have lost photos of my early trips around the country, mostly islands of the Caribbean, and South America including Bahia and Surinam.

Over time, the traveling and the many photographs from each trip evolved into street photography. Now, retired and living in Delray Beach, Samuel embraces life as an amateur street photographer. “I generally remain out of the picture, however there is at least one image of me everywhere…documenting that I was actually there. I really like shooting people in their natural pursuits”.

“Street photography is not always pretty, not fine art, but real and generally with a story”, Samuel relates.  “This project was begun during my travels several years ago with additions as I encountered them. All the images are as photographed, with minor post-production adjustments, however with no added or deleted elements. If one looks closely, frequently my reflection can be observed in the photo as I could not move out of the scene”.

Samuel’s photos take us beyond boundaries, and at times take us to a mirror-like  reflection, showing that which surrounds us and yet incorporates us.  “When one looks through glass, depending on lighting conditions, one is able to see a combination of the infinite and reflection”, he explains.

Is it distortion that calls us near or the sense of disorientation that makes us look again?   Samuel’s combinations  give us the sense of not being able to place images or objects in front or behind. Move closer, because with the multiple layers of light(s) and space(s) one is motivated to  discover images, on a variety of levels and depths, encouraging revelations and reflections!

When asked about advice he gives to beginning photographers he says, ” There are all types of photography – sports, street, documentary, portrait, wedding, etc.  Choose your equipment to match. He reminds us that learning photography is a process and he has found YouTube to be a great teacher!

Samuel is actively involved in the Delray Beach’s arts community.  He remarks, “I am a consumer of all things Art (music, painting, performance, native and craft, graffiti, dance, everything”.  On a recent Europe trip I photographed a series on the graffiti which I thought was unique. My wife Kenya and I  love to attend exhibitions and performances  – not to just give support, but to consume for our enrichment.  I believe in the requirement of Art for a rich life, and fully appreciate and support the special talents of  artists”.

Samuel Spear Jr. has had exhibits at The Arts Garage in Delray Beach, The Spady Cultural Museum, and other exhibition spaces throughout South Florida.  He published a photo-travel table book,  “So Much to See, So Little Time” and his work recently appeared in Black + White Photography Magazine.  Because of COVID-19, his trips to far-flung destinations are currently limited. On the top of his list are trips to Fez, Morocco to attend the World Sacred Music Festival, and to a Zen Retreat in Oita, Japan to get an authentic experience in their culture.  “I have been very blessed to be able to even consider and live my life following the motto – So Much to See, So Little Time”.  As enthusiastic as he is looking forward to traveling again…So are we – to peek into his photos!
