Celebrate With 5th Annual Plein Fun Fest In Delray Beach From January 31 Through February 2. Discover New Plein Air Artists And Fabulous Locations To Paint.

Plein Fun Fest is celebrating its 5th year in Delray Beach. This “Hidden Gem” features great artists who live and work in Palm Beach and Broward counties.  Come watch juried artists paint on the streets of fabulous, action-packed Delray Beach on January 31-February 2, 2020. Last year Plein Fun Fest raised over $5,000 at the silent auction and more than $8,000 for the week. The mission of Plein Fun Fest is to be a regional art event to support artists of South Florida.  The competition is sponsored jointly by Plein Air Palm Beach (PAPB) and Old School Square.  The events are free and open to the public, as viewers find themselves immersed in the sights, sounds, and even smells of these artists’ world.  Artwork will be for sale, so mark your calendars!  The Rickie Report shares the details here.

The first plein air paint-out and critique is scheduled for Friday, January 31, 2020. Painters will work from 9:00 am to noon with a luncheon and critique to follow.

On Saturday, February 1, the public can wander around the streets of Delray any time between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to see more than 50 artists capturing the hidden gem that is Delray Beach. Our artists love to have an audience and will be happy to share what they are doing with you.

The paintings from Plein Fun Fest 2020 will be featured in a silent auction beginning on Friday night January 31 at 6:30 pm and all-day Saturday until 4:00 pm at Old School Square in Delray Beach. Last year Plein Fun Fest raised over $5,000 at the silent auction and more than $8,000 for the week.

The Plein Fun Fest competition is sponsored jointly by Plein Air Palm Beach (PAPB) and Old School Square. “The aim of Plein Fun Fest is to be a regional art event to support artists of South Florida. We want to have something that reflects our group and we want to be local. We are not interested in competing with the national plein air competition events,” says publicity chair, Donna Walsh.

Caren tells The Rickie Report, “I love my work as a graphic designer and fine artist. I am always happy to be in the studio. However, very few of my projects have filled me with as much drive and energy as the “Yoga Series” and “Yoga Icons.” There are so many reasons why this series of work is deeply meaningful to me”.

APBCCarenHackmanStill Lifel 2016 Card WEB

• ONE: Yoga saved my life. After an injury in 2008 and unsuccessful back surgery, I was in pain and side-lined for two years. Thanks to the great training I received from my first yoga instructor, Anna Lee Sanders, and all the wonderful teachers since, I live a full, active life. This series of paintings shows my gratitude, love, and respect for the practice. I hope that viewers can feel that love, and connect with the spiritual and physical aspects of yoga.

HACKMAN-Karen-red-TRR

• TWO: I can feel the body positions while I am painting. The breath work, distribution of weight, and muscle exertion are with me as I create the art.

HACKMAN-shelby-child-pose-TRR

“Shelby, Child Pose” by Caren Hackman

• THREE: Anytime that I have the opportunity to combine media or skills in graphic design and fine art, I am happily energized. Working the images back and forth between the digital world and the paintbrush on canvas world makes for greater artistic expression.

HACKMAN-Karen-in-blue-TRR

“The yoga artwork takes two forms. One group of pieces on which I am working are acrylic paintings on canvas. The painterly realism of the brushstrokes and lighting show the energy and spirit of the asanas or poses. To further the feeling of freedom, I’ve elected not to “constrain” the pieces in a classic frame. The pieces hang, scroll-style, from a support at the top of each painting”.

HACKMAN-shanti-scroll-TRR

“Shanti Scroll” by Caren Hackman

“The other suite of artwork combines digital painting and archival printing on canvas with hand embellished accents. I have coined this suite of paintings “Yoga Icons” as homage to Andy Warhol, who had a knack for depicting well-known personalities as “pop icons”. Warhol’s line work and use of bright, flat colors in his silk screened portraits, made an impression on me when I visited an exhibition of his work at the Boca Museum of Art. I created my own stylized color and line work in this yoga series”.

“Many thanks to my first models, Karen Burnett and Shelby Grant of Yoga Palm Beach who are my first yoga pop icons!  I am so happy to have been invited to judge the Artists of Beach County “Still Life” show and to be offered a Solo Exhibition area for my latest figurative and spiritual yoga pieces”.

Rolando Chang Barrero, was born in Coconut Grove, FL and currently resides in West Palm Beach, FL.  After receiving a BFA School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rolando became an artist and art activist. Pulling together artists from various media and spectrums of life, his own artwork often took a back seat. His famous Art Walks established the Boynton Beach Arts District as the place to be seen.  He assures The Rickie Report that those will continue on a monthly basis, even as he puts his energies into this new gallery in Lake Worth.  His studio remains at 410 West Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach, FL.  In addition, he and Craig McInnis are organizing Art Synergy/Art Palm Beach ART WEEK for January, 2015.

Meet and Greet the Artists of Plein Air Palm Beach County!

Plein Air Artists can be spotted in Southeast Florida, with their paints and easels, transforming the ordinary into a special moment captured in time. As with the spectacle of the swallows of Capistrano, this may be a rare sight in the wild. However, the people of Palm Beach will soon have an opportunity to see plein air artists all together and with a magnificent display of their paintings. Plein Air painting has become a ‘big deal’ in the art world over the last few years. En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school and to the Impressionists. Since the advent of social media in the last decade, there has been a resurgence of plein air painting groups.

South Florida, through the Palm Beach Plein Air Artists Society has been active and involved in this delightful approach to painting, a legacy of the Impressionists.

Plein Air Palm Beach Website and Artists

This exhibit showcases the artwork of the group co-founded by Donna Walsh & Ralph Papa, Plein Air Palm Beach (PAPB). The exhibit is a joint project with the Cultural Council and Plein Air Palm Beach exhibiting the work of local area and visiting artists of all the beautiful and favored places to paint in Palm Beach County. Plein Air Palm Beach Artists painted out in the ten, different locations over the course of 10 weeks, a different location every week between December and February.

Sometimes the weather did not cooperate, but that did not stop the hard core artists. If you attend this Meet and Greet you will get to hear all the behind the scene stories of the artwork on exhibit and there are many great stories. During the course of this project over 80 different artists participated and well over 200 paintings were produced.

Meet Ups were scheduled throughout

Meet Ups were scheduled throughout Palm Beach County

Plein Air Palm Beach began as two separate meetup groups for plein air painting. One of our contributing artists, Mary Mirarito, described her joy in finding fellow plein air painters by saying, “When I moved here and found the meetup site for Plein Air Palm Beach, I felt like I joined an art dating site and found the love of my life.”  In the spring of 2013, Ralph and Donna decided to merge the groups. Later, with help of key participants, the meetup group was formalized to become Palm Beach Plein Air.

On April 22, 2014 at a meeting at Delray Center for the Arts, they signed the incorporation papers to file Plein Air Palm Beach, Inc. as a not for profit corporation of Florida.

Plein Air Palm Beach is for art lovers and artists at all levels who love plein air painting in and around Palm Beach County and the surrounding South Florida vicinity. The group was organized to bring artists together to paint the land, sea and cityscapes in beautiful south Florida. Plein Air Palm Beach welcomes resident artists and visiting artists at all levels to come out with us to paint and document today’s landscapes that contribute to tomorrow’s history.

To find out more about us, see their website at http://www.pleinairpalmbeach.com/ or checkout their meetup site, http://www.meetup.com/palmbeachartists/, where the paintouts are scheduled. If you have never painted outside, it can be a bit intimidating, but it is an enormous amount of fun when you go with a compatible group. As Donna Walsh put it, “Once people paint with us, they can’t wait to come back. We plan going to many places in Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties and have a lot of fun.”

“I’m fascinated by the constant change in what we consider our secure and familiar environment, and I find most satisfaction from painting live, on location,” she tell The Rickie Report. “I hope to capture the energy and essence of what appears right now, particularly those everyday scenes that are so much a part of our lives and that we take for granted until they disappear. Painting from direct observation is to me the most real and honest way to live in that moment.”
