The Florida Watercolor Society’s “Creative Confinement Challenge” Online Exhibition – Original And Affordable Art For Everyone

What happens when 100 watercolor artists are cooped-up and concerned about shows, sales, and funding for not-for-profit arts organizations like the Florida Watercolor Society? FWS came up with the “Creative Confinement 64-Inch Challenge”! Members were challenged to “confine” their work to 64-square inches (8″ x 8″), creating an original water media artwork to express their feelings or experiences during the “safer-at-home mandate”. The Challenge gave the artists inspiration to create, a place to show and now, sell their work, and the entry fees raised money for the FWS Healing Arts Award for the 49th Annual Exhibition.  This virtual exhibit is showing now through August 15, 2020. The Rickie Report gives you a sneak-peek of some of the images and urges you to hurry to make a purchase! The prices are affordable and the images offer diverse subject matter! We also include information about the FWS 49th Annual Exhibition and upcoming virtual workshops, demonstrations, Convention & Trade Show. About the Florida Watercolor Society:

 

The Florida Watercolor Society is the largest State society in the United States with nearly 1000 members. Our mission is to promote the art of watercolor and to educate the public as to the importance of watercolor as a creative and permanent painting medium while contributing to the cultural atmosphere of the state of Florida.

 

 

FWS’ Annual Awards are among the most outstanding of the major state water media organizations in the country. They are made possible by sponsors including individuals, businesses, and memorial gifts from the estates of members who have passed. The annual cash and merchandise awards usually total over $20,000, including two $1500 purchase awards. One of these is sponsored by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, a major sponsor and great friend of FWS. The other is the Healing Arts Award given by FWS to purchase a painting from the Annual Exhibition to be donated to a medical facility of the current President’s choosing. This year, the painting is going to Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg where the annual events were to be held before COVID-19 came into the picture. Since their live annual Fall events were canceled, FWS came up with the Creative Confinement Challenge to raise funds for the Healing Arts Award!

 

 

FWS’ main events each year are an Annual Exhibition, Convention & Trade Show every fall in various locations throughout Florida. FWS also hosts an Online Show for our Non-Signature members. At our Convention, we host two 4-day workshops and at least one 1-day workshop taught by invited internationally-known artists. During Convention weekend, demonstrations by noted artists are presented hourly, as well as critiques, silent auctions, raffles, and a host of other wonderful activities. There are Member and Non-Member rates to register for the Convention, however, the Trade Show is free and open to the public.

THE 2020 FWS ANNUAL CONVENTION & TRADE  SHOW GO VIRTUAL

Since the cancellation of 2020 fall events, the FWS board has been working very hard to create virtual offerings during the week the Convention & Trade Show would have taken place.  While this could never substitute for a live gathering, there will still be a Convention featuring demonstrations by noted artists, workshops, interviews, and even opportunities to purchase art supplies from our Trade Show vendors! 

There will even be an online Exhibition Review by Michael Reardon, judge & juror for the 49th Annual Exhibition.

“As a teaching tool, students will be provided with an array of carefully selected mini magazine clips based on color and composition,” said Lois. “This guides them to begin to create some of their own beautiful unique abstract designs.” 

 

 

 

 

The technique Lois uses to achieve beautiful abstract designs is the same one she uses in her popular mini abstract workshops!

Many of her students have asked to paint a bit larger and a little bit looser in her workshops.

Lois tells the Rickie Report:

 

“I am bumping up the canvas size this time so students will be working on 11 x 14 formats rather than the usual mini 5 x 7 sizes,” she said.  “I’ll continue to use the same techniques that have worked so successfully for me for a number of years-using the mini 5 x 7 magazine clips for inspiration as it allows me to better visualize the design. Starting with this mini technique is not intimidating even for new abstract artists and allows them a place to start so they are not just staring at a blank canvas”, said Lois. “ Some of my returning students will build upon their techniques and experiment with paints, inks and collage (or bring old failed paintings) to create some of their own organic abstract artwork in this new looser, bigger workshop.” 

In the workshop Lois will begin on the 11 x 14 canvas with the first layers of watercolor paints, acrylics/inks, stencils and mark making to create a foundation. Then she said it would be “sealed “and many more layers would be applied to create depth. 

 A supply list will be provided upon registering. 

(Although Lois paints on watercolor paper, canvas and wood panel, she prefers the magic of a plastic paper called Yupo. It has a slick surface unlike the more absorbent watercolorcolor paper; when Yupo meets water media the colors virtually explode. She begins all her first layers with watercolor paints/inks, powdered watercolor pigments, glazes and markings to establish a ‘busy” foundation and then proceeds to acrylic paints/inks charcoal, pen for marking and collage.  She holds the first layers with polymer medium or varnish so the paint doesn’t “move”! and then begins to apply subsequent layers. Many of Lois’ finished paintings on Yupo have between 10 to 15 layers, each layer has been “set” with varnish to hold the colors. Lois realized how much of an impact using the “small formats” technique made in her own artwork practice. Soon she began receiving awards and recognition in national, state and local competitions with her larger format works. 

In addition to the recognition, she got another bonus: Students wanted to learn how to paint abstract design techniques-from her!   She was asked to teach —something she loves to do—and for the past several years has been teaching these concepts to local students at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere at venues throughout the local area upon request!

Classes are filled with returning students who just want to “change up” their art style and artists who just want to bring some “zing” to their style through abstract art techniques. 

 

About Lois

After working in other creative fields, I discovered a passion for Abstract painting. Although I had briefly studied oil painting, sculpting and weaving, entering that first abstract class was just the beginning of an amazing journey for me. Here I could use my energy, spontaneity and vision.  I could paint where nothing is ever “wrong” and there are no “rules”. I use fantasies, feelings and my imagination combined with colors, shapes, materials, concepts and designs to create my own way of expressing myself through Abstract Art.

Lois, who has lived in South Florida her entire life, has been recognized in National, State and Local juried art competitions. Her vibrant, abstract expressionist paintings have won many awards. Lois regularly takes workshop classes with Nationally recognized artists who provide their expertise and enthusiasm for her to continue her passion for painting!

Lois is an active member of a number of business and art-related Local, State and National art organizations including the International Society of Experimental Artists, Florida Watercolor Society, Gold Coast Watercolor Society, Weston, Plantation, Broward Art Guilds. Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Executive Club and National League of American Pen Women, Fort Lauderdale Branch where she serves as first vice president and program chair.

Elliott Museum Hosts Florida Watercolor Society’s 2018-2019 Traveling Exhibition. Enjoy Reception, Meet Artists, Live Demos November 8 To January 27

The Elliott Museum in Stuart, FL will host the first leg of the Florida Watercolor Society’s 2018-2019 Traveling Exhibition.  The Florida Watercolor Society (FWS), one of the largest and most prestigious organizations of its kind in the US, holds an Annual Exhibition in different areas of the state. UNDERSTANDING    ABSTRACT    ART

 

 

Lois Perdue  explains to The Rickie Report, “As an abstract expressionist, I am frequently asked the same two questions about my paintings:  ‘How do you start one of those paintings?’ And, the next one is usually: ‘How do you know when it is finished?’  Maybe for those reasons alone, buying abstract art is a challenge!  But with a better understanding of this exciting genre and its potential investment opportunities, collecting abstract art can be a win-win”.

First, What is Abstract Art?

The most important difference between abstract art and representational or subjective art is that you just cannot find a subject in an abstract painting.

It doesn’t relate to anyone or anything or try to resemble something. Instead, color and form are the subjects of the painting.

What to Look for in Original Abstract Art:

New art collectors should look for vibrant colors, rich brush strokes, intriguing designs, intricate details, touchable textures and a focal point.

If the work is painted on canvas, even the smell of an original work is an experience, particularly if it is an oil painting.

But what sets original abstract artwork apart so you can begin to make wise decisions?

There are dozens of well-known abstract artists, including Picasso, Klee, Mitchell and Diebenkorn, to name a few. A quick search on the Internet will familiarize you with dozens of different artists and their techniques of painting.

 

How Do You Want to Use Your Abstract Art?

Here are some questions to ponder in order to find the best placement for your purchases.

Have you started noticing abstract artists whose work you admire? Each has a distinct style.

Have you thought about beginning to collect this type of art? Or do you simply want the paintings to complete the interior design plan of your home’s new modern/contemporary concept?

Are you working with an interior designer to find art for your yacht? Or is it for corporate use for offices, hospitals or the hospitality industries to furnish hotels or restaurants?

Why Buy Original Abstract Art: An Emotion or an Investment?

A majority of art professionals (86 percent) surveyed said clients buy art and collect art for emotional reasons, but also focus on investment value, according to Deloitte’s Art & Finance Report 2017.

Wealth managers (54 percent) sell art as a way to safeguard value — up 3 percent since 2016.

And 88 percent of wealth managers surveyed (up 10 percent) think art and collection should be included as part of their investment strategies.

“People buy because they simply love the painting or it connects with them on an emotional level,” said. Linda Jerrell, co-owner of Heritage Art Galleries. “Others buy art because of its ‘worth’ or what it will be worth in the future.”

Co-owner Claudio Tomassone believes people buy abstract art because it is a matter of taste.

“Some people just prefer not to have a conventional shape or form in their artwork,” he said. “Others look at textures or the strokes in the paint, etc. And in some cases when a painting is being purchased for a public space, an abstract is preferred because it will bring ‘warmth’ to a space while keeping a ‘neutral’ feeling. Abstract art leaves more room for one’s imagination.”

Where to Buy Abstract Art: Directly from a Gallery?

One of the best ways to find an artist who works locally is at art galleries around the cities in which they live.

When buying from a gallery, they have done the leg work for you, vetting the artists they represent.

According to Linda, their gallery invests in local artists because it helps to support the local art and cultural communities.

“We also look for artists who stand out while always keeping trends and clients’ aesthetic desires in mind,” she said.

“Whether we are representing new or established talent, we do a great deal of research to determine if their art is marketable and a good investment. We look at their current following, pricing and level of interest in their work.”

Claudio added that they look for the most talented, accomplished artists. Heritage not only represents local artists, but their collection includes artists such as Turkey, Erte, Schluss and Treby, to name a few.  Buying from a gallery also provides services such as art restoration, framing and custom framing, according to Ian Jerrell, co-owner and head of the restorations and framing at Heritage.  “It’s not only how the framing and restoration are going to look, but the preservation of your artwork so its beauty continues to bring joy for many years.”

Or Do You Buy Directly from the Artist?

If you don’t go to a gallery, where will you find those artists whose work appeals to you?

You may find them at local art exhibits, libraries, festivals, museums and other venues.  I belong to more than half a dozen local art guilds and art societies in my area, and each of them hosts about half a dozen or more art exhibits each year at a variety of places that are free and open to the public.

Check your online local media’s weekend listings, library and museum listings, too. You will soon see the same artists appearing multiple times and you can begin tracking favorite ones on your way to buying/collecting.

Sometimes, the artists are at the venue and you can meet them in person to discuss their techniques, prices, etc.

Most of the time, they will have a business card or brochure near their artwork so you can reach them for further talks. Check out their websites and Instagram/Facebook profiles to see more of their collections.

Putting a Price on an Original Abstract Painting:

Whether you work with an art gallery or buy directly from the artist, it is best to set a budget first.

“A lot of factors go into the pricing of a work of art. When dealing with local artists, it is a one-on-one agreement between us and the artist,” Claudio said. “As for established and renowned artists’ originals and prints, we study the market and find out what their art is generally selling for on an international level and price accordingly,” he said.

Navigating the Cost: Sticker Shock! Crossing the Threshold Toward Buying

How do you approach an artist about the price of the work?

It is an emotional purchase. A lot of passion and hard work have gone into the artwork. Sometimes, it is difficult to put a price on an elusive emotion, but hopefully, there is a sticker attached!

The prospective buyer has to have confidence in the artist from whom they are making the purchase. The buyer can begin keeping detailed information about a favorite artist and his or her creative process; this information can most often be found on the artists’ websites along, with their resume and list of their other artistic activities.

Another confidence-builder before you go start collecting artwork is to ask for referrals from friends or associates who collect art, particularly from those who know the artists.

Does a local venue have any of the artist’s work on display? Are there any published articles about the artist and exhibits in which they have appeared?

For example, I let my clients know when and where I am going to be exhibiting on my Facebook page, Instagram and through emails — numerous times. I ask them to tell their friends and neighbors to come and see the exhibits.

I also talk about my unique techniques whenever I can, including the 10 to 15 layers of paint I use in each piece of artwork, the unusual tools I use to “paint” with, including shower squeegees and kitchen spatulas, and how and why I use certain paints.

Many of my abstract paintings begin on a plastic paper called Yupo that first has been given textural layerings to create dimension.

I apply thin washes of watercolor, many translucent glazes and then use vibrant acrylic paints, inks and nontraditional tools to create unique brush strokes and markings.

I focus on landscapes that I describe as “big, organic and intense,” reflecting my proximity to the ocean and experiences traveling worldwide.

My audience often is fascinated with the “how” and “why” and always want to hear my back story about how I wanted to paint since I was a child but didn’t pick up a paint brush (or squeeguee!) until nine years ago, when I retired!

Solving Clients’ Pay Concerns (Other Issues):

 

Clients may think that the artwork is “out of their budget” or the price too high. Remember that everyone deserves to have beauty every day in front of them!

To make it easier for some clients to buy art, some artists have credit card options or PayPal available rather taking cash or checks. Some artists will even make arrangements for credit card installment payments. Some artists lease their work on a monthly or other scheduled basis to make “beauty” more affordable in the home, workplace or on their yacht! Ask them if they have these arrangements.

And what if clients say your artwork will “clash” with their decor? Show them a similar piece with a different color palette, or offer to paint another (commissioned piece) with just the exact colors they request at the same price as the one they saw for sale at your venue. Remind them that your artwork will make the room “pop,” not the sofa!

And if a client can’t make up his or her mind, offer a gift certificate. They may not be able to select a painting or choose a color palette or whether it should be a canvas or framed painting.

By selling gift certificates in certain dollar amounts, recipients can redeem them for their preferences whenever they want. It is just smart business and oh-so-convenient!

Negotiating and/or Discounting for Art?

While these two words make most artists and gallery owners feel faint, some artists love the idea of negotiating.

I, personally, think that offering discounts devalues my work. I already have established a price based on my time, techniques, expertise, size of work, competition and uniqueness.

If I discount, then there is the notion that the price already was inflated; however, there are some artists who are ready and eager to negotiate, and you shouldn’t hesitate to inquire.

Give abstract art a look! While it is beautiful as well as mystifying, you always will find something speaking to you from within the painting if you seek it out.

This type of art should not be missed!

Lois discovered that the technique of painting “smaller formats” has given her greater control over her painting.  This has led to her receiving awards and recognition in national, state and local competitions with her larger format works.  Although Lois paints on watercolor paper, canvas and wood panel, she prefers the magic of a plastic paper called Yupo.  It has a slick surface unlike watercolor paper and when it meets water media, colors virtually explode. She begins all her under first layers with watercolor paints, powdered watercolor pigments, watercolor inks, glazes and markings to establish a foundation and then proceeds to acrylic paints and acrylic inks, charcoal and pen for mark making, oil pastels and, of course, collage! Each of her finished paintings may have 10, 15 or more layers, all each having been “set” with varnish to hold the colors. Lois has lived in South Florida her entire life and teaches abstract workshops upon request throughout the area.  She is very active in the art community and is a member of Plantation, Weston, Broward and Coral Springs Art Guilds, Florida Watercolor Society, International Society of Experimental Artists, XII Voices, an informal group of 12 professional water media artists who meet monthly to exchange current art information and offer critiques and evaluations from their peers. She is also first vice president and program chair of the Fort Lauderdale Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, an organization comprised of artists,

The Plantation Art Guild is a small, but very active arts organization founded in 1973 and incorporated in 1986 as a non-profit. PAG, which currently has 102 members, offers workshops, four juried shows with cash awards and monthly meetings. A guest artist demonstrates different techniques at the monthly meetings which are held throughout the season that runs from September to May. PAG also holds regularly scheduled paint-ins.

Since its beginning, Plantation Art Guild has endeavored to award one or more scholarships annually to students who are residents of Plantation or attend a Plantation high school and plan to continue their education in Fine Arts.

Make Your Reservations For Florida Watercolor Society Annual Convention And Trade Show

The Florida Watercolor Society will be in Coral Springs this year to celebrate its 46th Annual Exhibition, Convention, and Trade Show. FWS is one of very few organizations of its kind in the country to hold an Annual Convention and Trade Show. The Convention kicks off Thursday evening, September 14th  with a two-hour painting demonstration by Iain Stewart. Many more demos, as well as critiques, raffles, silent auctions, and a Paint-Around are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 15th & 16th. All of these events are included with the $20 registration fee. Other instructors include watercolor artists Bev Jozwiak AWS, NWS and Sue Allen AWS, NWS.  The Trade Show is free and open to the public. The Exhibition judge, artist Iain Stewart AWS, NWS, reviewed nearly 600 entries to select the 100 watermedia paintings that will show from September 9th through November 17th at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs. Iain also selected 35 paintings from the show to travel on to two additional venues. Bonita Springs Center for the Arts will host the first stop, showing November 21st through December 28th. The second stop will be the Gadsden Art Center & Museum in Quincy, FL, from January 12th through March 24th, 2018. Both Traveling Show venues will host a reception on opening night.

 

WORKSHOPS:

 

Two workshops held in conjunction with the 46th Annual Exhibition still have space available. Iain Stewart’s four-day workshop, held September 11th -14th, 9am – 4pm still has a few spots open. Sue Allen NWS, FWS will teach a one-day workshop on September 14th from 9am-4pm. The workshops will be held at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Coral Springs Resort, 11775 Heron Bay Blvd. in Coral Springs.

Iain Stewart shares, “Painting my reality is with lines and light.”  It is not only about how the light influences his paintings, but to the award-winning watercolor artist and architectural illustrator, it’s about the lines, too.  Born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in North Carolina and later, Alabama since the age of six, Stewart holds numerous international awards, is a signature member of the National and American Watercolor Societies and holds a degree in architecture.  For the first time, Stewart, has been invited to be one of three artists who will be teaching a four-day workshop at this year’s Florida Watercolor Society (FWS) Convention & Trade Show. “I get a great deal of satisfaction teaching workshops,” he said. “I can communicate my ideas both vocally and visually in a manner that will, hopefully, remain with the artists and be repeatable by them.”

Now 46-years-old, Stewart was fortunate to have had a head start in the field of art. He grew up familiar with renderings and architectural drawings as his father, Muir Stewart, was a Professor of Architecture at Auburn University until he retired in 1987. In addition, the senior Stewart has been a watercolorist his entire life and still continues an active career as an architectural illustrator and artist.  “There is friendly competition between us,” said Stewart.  Stewart, who will also hold one-on-one critiques during the convention weekend, said he learned some valuable lessons about critiquing art by example.

 

“My father has an uncanny ability to give scathing critiques, but they are correct,” he said. “What I do then is, if it’s fixable, I fix it, or I just start all over again” he said. “We now critique each others’ work which can become quite interesting at times.”  Stewart says, however, his own critiques are gently delivered, also productive and intended to help students learn.  “For myself, I like to use my ruined efforts to start the ‘barbeque’,” he said. “Successful paintings teach us very little. It’s the hand to the hot stove, the sting of the bee–the ruined painting that makes you look inward and seek out where you went wrong. I ask my students to create a written step-by-step process for a ruined painting—to go back and do a plan, find a point of reference of where and why they did it. Then their task is to go back and rework it and try to avoid making the same mistake twice.”

Stewart, who has been published numerous times, most recently in Plein Air Magazine, (April/ May Issue) teaches both studio and plein air workshops on a regular basis throughout the United States and Europe. Other publications in which Stewart has been featured include Watercolor Artist, The Art of Watercolour, Southern Living, Cottage Living, Better Homes & Gardens, The Robb Report and the French publication Pratique des Arts. He also has a three-DVD set available through northlightshop.com.  Always a watercolorist, Stewart enjoys the process of protecting light from the beginning. He admits his real struggle is to capture the initial vision.  “You have to see the works’ glow from the start,” he said.  Stewart added that he is most often motivated by capturing a definitive lighting condition and how it influences shape and value rather than faithfully representing the subject as witnessed. “The lion’s share of my work is accomplished alla prima,” said Stewart. “Watercolor is uniquely suited for the task of capturing light and must be preserved from the first brush strokes and protected throughout the painting process.”

Stewart maintains a studio in Opelika, Alabama for his duo career as a fine art watercolorist alongside his 20-year career as an architectural illustrator with an international clientele. Stewart says he is hired to create scenes that showcase the designer’s intentions in the best way possible. Clients have ranged from the Georgia State Capital to the Dublin Zoo. Once a year he heads to his alma mater, Auburn University, where he is an adjunct professor, to teach a course called “Architecture in Watercolor”.  “The course I teach is reviving and combining the use of watercolor presentation in the age of computer- dominated presentation techniques,” Stewart said.

 

Stewart does agree that his style has changed over the years and says it was gradual.  “I moved away from the tightness of my rendering style to a more expressive way of painting”, he said. “My work changes yearly and I noticed this when I began to focus more on my sketchbooks to bring the liveliness I experience when working in them to my studio work. It is less about accuracy and more about the feeling of being in a certain place. I have moved in a more painterly direction and continue to embrace the changes when they come. If I painted the same way year after year my personal work would become dull very quickly to me. In architectural illustration it’s all about the line work. When I paint for myself I never let a line tell me where to put my brush.”

Stewart says he ruins more paintings when working on something new as his style changes but there is a benefit in that.  “That means I am on to something new and to follow it as far as it will take me. You would be surprised at how many people think that once you begin receiving awards, jurying, and getting into major publications that you somehow stop creating works that are not up to your idea of what constitutes a good painting,” he said.  To achieve the uniquely dramatic, sometimes moody strokes in his award-winning paintings, Stewart says he often uses imagined atmospheric and lighting conditions in his work and paints from both life and imagination.  “Watercolors are not only a translation of what I see, but more importantly, an expression of how I choose to view the world,” he shares.  As for his workshop teaching style, he believes that some students struggle, but Stewart takes delight in this.  “It is those times when they see the larger picture and have one of those “ah ha moments” and not just see the technical side of the demonstration,” he said.  “A light comes into their eyes and smiles appear on their faces and that is priceless to me,” he said. “It’s the moment of understanding and it’s a wonderful thing to see and be part of.”

Watercolorist And Plein Air Artist, Manny Jomock Offers Demo At May 10th Wellington Art Society Meeting

The Wellington Art Society features well-known plein air artist and instructor, Manny Jomock, as their demonstrator for their final meeting of the season on Wednesday, May 10th, 2017. The meeting will be held at the Wellington Community Center. A “Meet and Greet” is followed by a member spotlight and brief meeting. Manny graduated from Monmouth College with a degree in art education. After a short tour as a Navy photographer, he taught underprivileged children in social service and recreational programs in New Jersey, Maryland and Maine. As Manny later studied watercolors with Pat Dews and Sally Brandenburg, he developed his artistic style of plein air painting through his involvement with the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast. Manny was influenced by watercolor masters such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, David Curtis and Joseph Zbukvic as well as many artists he studied under. In 2006 he started his career as a professional artist under the name “MannyJArt”.

 

 

Manny retired from the USPS in 2008, sold his home in NJ, and with his wife bought an RV to tour the country. Along the way, Manny painted with artists and joined art groups in San Antonio, Maine, Ontario and Delray Beach. After four and a half years of RVing, Manny and his wife settled in Boynton Beach in the winter and Mt. Desert Island and Bar Harbor, Maine in the summer.

 

 

Manny says, “The attempt to capture in my paintings how light affects the color, forms, atmosphere and mood found outdoors on site, becomes an alluring challenge to me. Watercolor’s transparency, subtle and gentile effects can produce a creative expression that’s unique and captivating.”

 

 

Manny now teaches watercolor for the Palm Beach County Adult Ed Program and is a faculty member of the Delray Art League. He also teaches privately, individuals and small groups for beginning and intermediate watercolor painting. His paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. He exhibits regularly in Florida and Maine. He is a member of Florida Watercolor Society, Plein Air Palm Beach, Delray Art League, Watercolor Society of America, International Plein Air Painters and several other art societies.

ArtServe Offers “Beyond Small Abstracts” Workshop Featuring Award Winning Artist, Lois Perdue March 13

Learn how to create your own bold, vibrant abstracts in Lois Perdue’s popular “Beyond Small Abstracts” workshop on Monday, March 13th.   Lois will instruct students on how to begin an abstract painting, how to expand smaller works to larger paintings and how to incorporate a variety of intriguing textures and techniques onto Yupo paper.  The workshop will be held at ArtServe.  The Rickie Report shares the details of how to register and some sneak peeks of Lois’ award winning artwork.

Learn how to create your own bold, vibrant abstracts in Lois Perdue’s popular “Beyond Small Abstracts” workshop.  She will be teaching new methods of applying textures.  Students of all stages are welcome to this workshop, as Lois will instruct you on how to begin an abstract painting, how to expand smaller works to larger paintings and how to incorporate a variety of intriguing textures and techniques onto Yupo paper!

Lois, who has lived in South Florida her entire life, has been recognized in National, State and Local juried art competitions.  Her colorful, abstract expressionist paintings have won many awards.   Lois regularly takes workshop classes with Nationally recognized artists who provide their expertise and enthusiasm for her to continue her passion for painting!

Lois tells The Rickie Report, “After years of working in other creative fields, I discovered a passion for Abstract painting. I had briefly studied oil painting, sculpting and weaving, but entering that first abstract class was the beginning of an amazing journey. Here I could creatively use my energy, spontaneity and vision. I discovered this process is more than just painting reality. It is the opportunity to paint where nothing is ever “wrong” and there are no rules. I use feelings, fantasy and imagination combined with colors, shapes, materials, concepts and design to create my own way of expressing myself through Abstract Art”.

Many of Lois’ abstract paintings begin on wood panel, watercolor paper or synthetic paper called Yupo with a textural layering to create dimension. She explains, “I apply thin washes of watercolor first and many translucent glazes as the under painting. Then I use bold, vibrant acrylics and inks along with the markings of calligraphy and brush strokes. Abstract Expressionism is a technique that is generally based on free and automatic “action painting”. As I begin to paint my experimental abstracts–sometimes intuitively, sometimes instinctively–I often approach the canvas with a mix of emotions. It is a very personal journey I take when I paint that hopefully, conveys a variety of emotions in viewers”.

Lois is an active member of a number of art-related local, State and National art organizations including the Florida Watercolor Society, Gold Coast Watercolor Societies, Weston Art Guild, Plantation Art Guilds, National League of American Pen Women/Ft. Lauderdale Branch, International Society of Experimental Artists, ArtServe and 12 Voices, an organization of professional artists.
