We are very excited to be hosting cutting-edge Israeli shoe designer Kobi Levi at the Levis JCC’s Nathan D. Rosen Museum Gallery Jan. 8 – 13, 2017 for his U.S. debut. Kobi Levi’s wearable art is revered for its whimsical nature and custom craftsmanship. His creations transfer the essence of daily objects such as bananas and birds, cheerleaders, chewing gum and coffee, as well as fantasy and glamour, into the shape of shoes. Celebrities including Lady Gaga, Whoopi Goldberg, and Fergie have been seen wearing his limited edition designs.

Kobi Levi has a true passion for sharing his vision, which blends the boundaries of art, design and fashion, with students and artists. We are delighted to invite artists, fashion students and faculty, designers, fashion marketers, and shoe lovers to attend his Artists’ Workshop (From Concept to Execution). This intimate workshop will offer a truly unique opportunity to create a shoe concept and then receive feedback and a critique from Kobi Levi. Students can bring iPads and create a digital design or they can sketch their design on paper. This unusual hands-on educational experience will provide participants the rare opportunity to work with a brilliant, creative shoe designer and artist.

Kobi Levi’s “wearable art” shoe designs are revered for their whimsical nature and masterful craftsmanship. His creations transfer the essence of daily objects such as bananas and birds, cheerleaders, chewing gum and coffee as well as fantasy and glamor – think Disney characters and mother/daughter duos – into the shape of shoes. Celebrities including Lady Gaga (Double Boots), Whoopi Goldberg, and Fergie (Chewing Gum) have been seen wearing his designs. The Kobi Levi “pop up boutique” at the Rosen Museum Gallery in Boca Raton will feature 30 unique pairs of hand-made, custom shoes.

“My inspiration for a new design originates from a simple concept or image and then the shoe becomes my canvas,” Kobi Levi explains. “My work blends the boundaries of art, design and fashion, as I relate to aspects from all three fields. I am thrilled to bring my visually humoristic footwear to the U.S. and excited to be launching two brand new designs at the Levis JCC!”

The FootWear Art exhibit is graciously underwritten by Judi and Allan Schuman. Additional support is provided by Arleen Roberts, Bloomingdales and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Boca Raton Magazine is the exclusive magazine sponsor of Kobi Levi’s FootWear Art exhibition and its associated events.

About Kobi Levi:

Design and shoes have been Kobi Levi’s passion since his childhood in Tel Aviv, Israel. After his graduation in 2001 from Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design, Jerusalem, Kobi Levi worked as a freelance footwear designer. During this time, he learned the trade secrets of shoe development and craftsmanship, while spending his leisure time designing unique, creative and innovative shoe styles, which challenge the standard definitions of design, art and fashion to create a niche of their own. It was in 2010 when Kobi’s creations began to receive attention from around the world, including a spot in Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” music video. The demand for Kobi Levi’s wearable art exploded and in July 2011 Kobi opened his studio in Tel Aviv, offering his original designs for sale. In the studio he creates, develops and produces limited editions from his designs. All pairs are made by hand from high-quality materials.

About Ferjo

Fernando de Jesus Oliveira (known as Ferjo) was born in Bahia, Brazil in 1946.  He studied at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1974-1979, where he concentrated on landscape and portraiture. It was during this time that Ferjo began painting Cubist style landscapes and eventually moving to realist portraiture. This latter style is best evidenced by a mock group portrait (1978-1979) of the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy, in which Ferjo posed his subjects in positions reminiscent of those of Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper”. Since receiving special accolades from the Pennsylvania Academy, first in 1978 and then again in 1979, Ferjo’s command of realist painting became widely recognized in galleries. After leaving The Academy, Ferjo’s natural artistry led him to explore a myriad of themes and styles, ranging from Realism to Surrealism.

Ferjo’s compositions combine the old masters and the new, in a magical bounty of color, surrealism, fantasy and beauty. His affinity for tokens adds a personal dimension to each work. Images of pencils, bubbles, fish, strawberries, and broken eggshells float throughout his work. The surrealist worlds he creates pay homage to Bosch, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali, Monet, Manet, Matisse, Miro, Modigliani, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Mucha and Chagall. In Ferjo’s world, the laws of perspective and scale are given new meaning; space and time are manipulated in fantastical arrangements, giving the viewer a sense of falling into another dimension.

Whimsical, colorful and technically refined, Ferjo’s work is an exuberant mix of Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Realism and Surrealism. Ferjo is a master painter with a style he can truly call his own. Ferjo’s work is sought by collectors and galleries worldwide.
