Artwork by Michelle Held

Much like a pink spoonbill soaring through the dusky evening twilight, Michelle Held brings with her a splash of vibrancy, a flutter of unique perspective, and the song of nature in its truest form. Born and raised in Maryland, Michelle knew from a young age that she was meant to fly the vast skies of the art world with a palette and paints tucked beneath her eager wings. Michelle is passionate about the morning glow of a waking sun illuminating an observant egret, the conversation between a fisherman and a hungry pelican testing its luck, or the simplistic beauty of a half-peeled clementine, bursting with flavor and juicy color. Her passion and bold strokes come through in her paintings that are unforgettable!

Painting by Michelle Held

Her success in the art world has come from her winning combination of creative spark and imaginative nature along with her meticulous attention to detail. Often commissioned for custom paintings as well as murals, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and its ecosystems brought her to embrace the natural world through painting from life. From serene, swampy marshes draped in ancient Spanish moss to tiny, rickety oyster towns bursting with rainbow buoys and boats, there is always a sight to behold. Michelle believes that evoking a feeling of light, space, and passion is the key to any successful contemporary painting. Michelle gives attention to composition, design and value and gives credence to a “go with the flow” attitude as well, and lets the painting direct her, instead of imposing her will on it throughout the entire process.

Painting by Michelle Held

Plein air has set flight to many paint outs, including Easton, Forgotten Coast, Lighthouse ArtCenter, Adirondacks, Sedona to name a few. Achieving many awards throughout this journey, her favorite ones are the artist choice awards. The real victory however, has come with her love of teaching. There were so many who encouraged her, Michelle finds that paying it forward is the best way to fulfill the soul.

Taking a note from the birds she so loves to paint, Michelle approaches painting like flight, letting the swells and surges of the wind carry her and her brushes through those brilliant beautiful skies. Michelle has been passionately working as an artist and business owner for the past 25 years. She lives in Sarasota, FL and currently participates in invitational paint outs and is widely collected throughout the United States. Often commissioned for custom painting as well as murals, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and the natural world has brought her many awards throughout the United States!

What Ted’s students have told The Rickie Report:

“I just wanted to let you know that you are one of the people I am thankful for. You are a very patient, perspicacious and encouraging teacher and a critic and you have really changed painting for me in the last few months.  Not only have I reached the point where I can be more satisfied with my results, but the whole process has become more enjoyable for me.  Thank you for being such a generous teacher!”   JB

“Ted has taught me invaluable life lessons painting together. His supportive approach and teaching style allows me to learn completely as my authentic self. He provides safety in vulnerability and constructive feedback to hone my skills. Ted has supported me to live and flourish in my art, leading to my acceptance into the art program of my choice.  Learning with Ted has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and our time together goes well beyond our lessons. He’s taught me to believe in myself and to never give up – to love how I feel when I create art and to live up to what make me, me.”  BB

I have studied Watercolor Painting with Ted several ways –  in a plein air class in Maine , and both online and in person elsewhere. He is a wonderful, thorough, comprehensive teacher, who has taken me to new levels of understanding in color theory, reflection, depth and shadows, paint handling/technique. In addition, he is generous with his vast knowledge, extremely patient and supportive of his student, and has an awesome sense of humor that puts one at ease”. BMO

“Climate” Oil Painting by Genie Appel-Cohen

Genie Appel-Cohen tells The Rickie Report, “There are many great artists, and many great teachers; but to be an art teacher, a good one, requires skills not taught in any school.  There is no one more vulnerable or brave than a new art student.  They come to me, full of hope and yearning, and I take that responsibility very seriously.  Each person is precious. I need to learn just who they are, how best to teach them, and to support them completely, (every step of the way); on this wonderful journey, we call art.  That for me, is a mission and the blessing of my life”.  When you view some of the artworks by her students, you will see how this nurturing focus brings out the best in them! Due to the Pandemic, and at the urging of her students, Genie has created an unusually successful Zoom platform for artists in all 2 dimensional mediums.

Student artworks Left to Right: Marla Friedman, Fran Fran Starkman

Genie tells us, “Each painting is a story where the artist invites the viewer to become part of their inner world.  My work is an invitation to engage you in a conversation.  I use paint, or pencil to reveal hidden meaning; not just in my life, but in yours as well.  I usually work in a series so I can explore one idea, but in different ways.   My hope is that I can make a connection, and that you might say, “Oh yes, I see”, or,   “Yes, I felt that, too.” This might be one small part of our mutual humanity; but for me, it is everything”.
