JANE HART:  “A LIFE IN ART”

 

 

Jane Hart has over 35 years of professional experience in the international contemporary art field, active in NYC, L.A., London, South Florida and elsewhere. She has been engaged as a curator, gallerist, publisher of limited edition fine art works and art books, arts writer, and, last but not least, as a working artist. Hart was the curator of the recent Armory Art Center exhibition, “Champions: Caribbean Artists Breaking Boundaries in South Florida”., and was curator of the 2015 exhibition “100+ Degrees in The Shade: A Survey of South Florida Art”, featuring work by 170 artists in all media, and shown in nine venues throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. An encore presentation related to this project was highlighted to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Art Palm Beach at Palm Beach County Convention Center. A 224 page full color, hard cover book by Gean Moreno’s [NAME] Publications was produced to accompany the show, with texts by Erica Ando and Sandra Schulman. Among other awards and accolades, Ms. Hart was named Curator of the Year twice by the New Times.

 

 

 

Hart is also a working artist, known as TJ Ahearn, (an anagram of her name), making vibrant collages that have been exhibited and collected internationally. She will have a solo exhibition of her work at Design Sublime in Little River, Miami, opening on Friday, April 21. Hart attended the School of Visual Arts in New York as well as both the University of Miami BFA Program and Miami Dade Fine Arts Program.

 

 

From 2006 until 2015, she held the position of Curator of Exhibitions at The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, an acclaimed non-profit institution which focuses on contemporary visual art. During her tenure at the Center, Hart curated over 100 exhibitions, including an attendance record-breaking show with international sensation LEGO® artist Nathan Sawaya, drawing 13,000 visitors in 6 weeks. Hart also created the lecture series “Hot Topics”, twice given the John L. and James S. Knight Foundation Award, and numerous other special projects. Her 2015 curated exhibition of Wayne White’s art work won the Center’s first NEA grant for an exhibit.

 

 

Hart was founding Director of Muse [X] Editions, a ground breaking, digitally oriented fine arts publisher, the first of its kind in the U.S.. For several years she oversaw all artist projects, marketing, curation of exhibitions and international sales. Hart is also an independent curator and owner of long-standing venture “lemon sky: projects + editions”, a contemporary art business devoted to working with artists through exhibiting and promoting their work. She has worked with major artists on exhibits, projects, publications and editions, including Doug Aitken, John Baldessari, Wallace Berman (Estate), Uta Barth, Gregory Crewdson, Peter Halley, Alex Katz, Mike Kelley, Kienholz, Charles Long, Christian Marclay, Fabian Marcaccio, Catherine Opie, Diana Thater, and Andrea Zittel, among many others.

 

 

In December, 2016, Hart was the lead artist of #NowBeHere#3FL, a participatory photographic event held at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). This project was initiated by Los Angeles-based artist Kim Schoenstadt. #NowBeHere is staged city-to-city, encouraging female-identifying artists to appear en masse in a documentary photo. 305 South Florida artists participated in the photo. In 2017, Hart has completed numerous curatorial projects, including those at the Armory Art Center and The Box Gallery in West Palm Beach and Design Sublime and Under The Bridge in Miami.

“Dark Ouroboros” by Allison Kotzig

 

 

Allison Kotzig’s current work is focused on concepts of impermanence, myth, feminine power, fertility, cyclicality and infinity. A large part of her practice involves artistic deconstruction of social justice. Bones and found objects, both natural and human-made are used, along with video, paint, hide, and board. Her video work explores dream and trance states brought about by light reflection and movement as they relate to identity, transformation, mystery and transcendental experience.

She is an installation, video and mixed media artist who works and shows internationally. Her work is rooted in the mysteries of the forest, dream states, social protest and womanism.  After leaving school and striking out on her own to explore the world as a young punk rock feminist at age 15, Allison Kotzig lived in her car in a protracted journey across the United States. After returning to school, studying Neuropsychology and getting a Masters Degree in Medieval History from Dublin’s Trinity College, she now splits her time between Miami and Slovakia.

In Slovakia, she helps run an Inn and organic slow food restaurant which is focused on growing their own vegetables and keeping bees. She is a co-founder of the Slovak-based cook4refugee, a volunteer organization that cooks and delivers food to refugees on the move and in transit camps, and of the Miami-based collective Artists For Black Lives Matter.

In the USA, Kotzig has recently shown work at The Box Gallery and “Unleashed” at the New Arts Venue in West Palm Beach, Art Fort Lauderdale, the Projects in FAT Village, Fort Lauderdale, “Resurrecting Venus” at The Amadlozi Gallery, Miami and numerous other locations. Internationally, she’s had a solo shows organized by the Embassy of Ireland in Bratislava as well as with Beddington Gallery in France. She often shows work in service of cancer research with Gemlucart in Monaco. Her video work has been screened in Spain, Bangkok, Venice, Rome, Naples, France, as well as in many locations within the United States

Celebrating its 20th year in 2017, ArtPalmBeach is dedicated to contemporary, emerging, and modern master works of art of the 20th and 21st centuries. “Female – Unspecified” by Juan Erman Gonzales

Juan Antonio Gonzalez, better known as “Erman” (Cuba, 1956), is a mixed media artist whose theme driven, series based works are rooted in migration. Using utilitarian methods like wood-work, sewing and ceramics Erman creates original components for 2 and 3D collage, assemblage and installations long thought to echo and materialize remembrance, to converse about exile, displacement, up-rootness and transculture, with sub-contexts of family, gender and Afro-Caribbean folklore, from a Cuban-American vernacular. This dialogue is achieved with a very personal iconography: empty chairs and cups, ladders reaching heights and depths, wearer-less shoes, floating windows, the bifurcated but not barren landscape presented in a sub-reality where familial issues of home and homelands are questioned, challenged and when successful, resolved. He has taught art practices to children and adults living with disabilities and has been the guest lecturer at Edna Manley College in Jamaica, the National Gallery of the Bahamas, FIT in New York, Colorado State University and Lincoln Center in Ft. Collins, Colorado and most recently at Broward College in Davie, Florida in conjunction with his solo, traveling exhibition “Cortando, Cosiendo y Recordando,” a catalogued survey of works curated by Rosie Gordon-Wallace.

Erman’s works form part of many collections including the Miami Art Museum, Miami-Dade Public Library, Craig Robbin’s and Instituto Sacatar in Brazil where he was awarded an International Fellowship in 2006 culminating in a solo exhibition at ACBEU Gallery. He is presently engaged in a new series titled “I Am That, I Am” where using original stencils and drawing, he is experimenting with multiples, repetition and layering while analyzing names, adjectives and phraseology used by others when describing him.

Dorotha Lemeh is an Associate Professor of Visual Art at the Harriet L. Wilkes honors College (WHC) of Florida Atlantic University (FAU). As a visual artist, Dorotha Lemeh has to her credit over 80 exhibitions. Internationally her works of art have been exhibited in Bulgaria, Beijing & Huairou China, England, Italy, Ireland, Mali, Tlaxacala-Mexico, and Nigeria. Nationally, she continues to participate in exhibitions in New York, California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, Minnesota, Arkansas, Tennessee, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Texas, Washington D.C., and Washington State.

Her artworks were included in museum exhibitions at the following venues: Florida Museum for Women in the Arts in Deland, Florida, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Pennsylvania, National Civil Rights Museum in Tennessee, Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey, Arlington Museum of Art in Texas, and Euphrat Museum in California. Reviews of Professor Lemeh’s artwork have appeared in On View Magazine 2013, The International Review of African American Art; Arts & Antiques Magazine; Crossing Boundaries & Frontiers, Bamako, Mali; Gumbo Ya Ya: An Anthology of African American Women Artists by Dr. Leslie King- Hammond; and Painting in Acrylics. Her art images are also included in catalogues Biennale Interazionale Dell’ Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy 2001 & 1999, International Triennial of Painting: Sofia Bulgaria, Black Women in the Academy II, and Celebrating Visual Traditions II.  Dorotha Lemeh received her Masters of Fine Arts in painting & drawing from The Pennsylvania State University’s School of Visual Arts (SoVA) and her Bachelor’s of Science in Studio Art from The Tennessee State University.

Dorotha Lemeh states “All of my artwork explores the nature of woman in a world filled with paradoxes and contradictions regarding her/our human existence. Visually the structure of female archetypes presented in literature, mythology, and history consequently migrates through the image-laden era of popular culture is examined through both new media and the plastic arts critiqued as part of our collective history.

“My art contains images of birds, cages, flowers, as well as, umbrellas juxtaposed against and surrounded by the human form. Each form references a system of symbols used in society to construct narratives regarding (an understanding of) our bodies. These stories, depending on how we wish to understand them, either fetter us or free us from the constant onslaught of surveillance”.

Randy Burman has been creating art all his life and showing it since 1965. He says: “Drawing widely from popular culture, art history, information design, and social and political events, my practice is based on bringing together disparate formal elements to reveal hidden, compelling connections, and seeks to reveal the cultural forces that develop unintentionally in the real and digital worlds of objects, material, and ideas.

Randy grew up in Baltimore, where he attended the Maryland Institute College of Art until he dropped out in his Junior year. He had his first one-man show soon after, and published a book of drawn poetry entitled” We Knows Who’s Crazy Baby”. He worked as a staff artist for the underground newspaper, “Harry”, as well as creating movie titles for John Waters’ “Pink Flamingos” and “Female Trouble”, before moving to Miami in 1976. There he worked at a silkscreen workshop at Lowe Art Museum, partnered with several graphic design studios, and began his own design firm, IKON Communication + Marketing Design, where he continues as Creative Director today.

In 2005, Randy returned to fine art practice and in 2010 became a member of the Artformz Collective in Wynwood. Sri travels the world to conduct research connecting geological identities, man’s drive for scientific exploration, and humanity’s connection to The Universe. He questions “where are we going and how will we get there?”, and states: “Conscious and subconscious connections are visualized and expressed through art as a conduit to the interconnected cosmos.”

Sri integrates into his aesthetic process tenants of geography, nature, time, human origins, and the cosmos. He illuminates new possibilities and reconciles the old and new by synthesizing deeper understandings of our relationship to the natural world. He asks how our intellectual understandings compare with our emotional responses to these discoveries.

Sri originally came to the US from Hyderabad, India. His artistic training includes a B.A. in Studio Arts at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University, San Francisco. Recent shows include the South Florida survey show “100+Degrees in the Shade”, an expansive SOLO installation at Young at Art Museum, and an immersive space outpost installation at The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. He has also exhibited work at The Deering Estate, Boca Raton Museum of Art, pop up installations at the Dupont Building, the Ingraham Building, downtown Hollywood, FAT Village and public art video installations in the streets of Fort Lauderdale.

Sri’s awards include inclusion in The Photo Review Competition Issue (2015), Broward Artists grant, Brush Creek Arts Foundation in Wyoming, and National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center artists’ residency. He received the Innovative Artist Award at Fraker Scott Gallery, and the Juror’s Award from Smithsonian Affiliate, Annmarie Sculpture and Arts Center. His videos were shown in Resfest, garnered the Ford Motion in Drive video award, and his title design work was shown on PBS. He teaches photography and mixed media at NSU Museum of Art, and taught at Film Arts Foundation and Expression Center for New Media in San Francisco. His works are in several private collections in Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, New York, Washington, DC, and Copenhagen. Sri lives in Hollywood, Florida and spends a considerable amount of time engaging in research across the world.

The Bold Beauty Project is an innovative photography exhibition showcasing 20 women living with various disabilities. Each panelist will present their contribution to the project and how they in turn have been impacted by their participation.

Bob Colacello: In and Out with Andy – Vanity Fair special correspondent Bob Colacello will discuss his new exhibition and his life with Andy Warhol, the brilliant, controlling, private, insecure, and influential man who continues to fascinate us. As the editor of Interview magazine from 1971 – 1983, Colacello photographed the glamorous world of Warhol’s circle of associates, the Factory office, star-studded parties and openings around the world, and captured images of Warhol in quiet moments at his most honest and vulnerable.

Dr. Milagros Bello, art historian, sociologist, curator and art writer and a graduate of the Sorbonne, will discuss the practices and purposes of Post-Conceptual Art, From the iconic Duchamp’s urinal, the mass produced objects of Pop Art or the singular simplicity of the Minimalists, artists of the 21st century have critically stretched the margins of aesthetics. This lecture examines the works of Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Maurizio Catelan to Wangechi Mutu, among others, who have created new notions of contemporary art.

ARTISTS AT WORK/DEMONSTRATIONS:

Faculty artists from the Boca Raton Museum of Art School will demonstrate gold leafing, painting on porcelain, collage and figure drawing in the Art School’s booth at the fair.

Friday, March 18

Noon to 2:30 p.m. – Jacalyn Sanders, collage instructor will demonstrate and invite attendees to create their own small collage.

3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. – Marybelle Cordell, painting instructor, will demonstrate the process of painting on porcelain.

Saturday, March 19

Noon to 2:30 p.m. – Andrea Huffman, textile artist, will demonstrate printing on fabric and guests will be invited to create their own small printing on cloth.

3 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Christopher Lopez will be the Artist at Work – representational drawing

Sunday, March 20

Noon to 2:30 p.m. – Suzanne Scherer will demonstrate the art of gold leaf, and tool and stamping into gold.
Noon to 2:30 p.m. Jacalyn Sanders will be the Artist at Work – collages
1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Figure Drawing from live models with adult art school students sketching. Attendees are invited to join in and materials will be provided.

Hidden Books: The Art of Kumi Korf – screening and discussion

Directed by Sam Hampton and produced by Kirsten Hampton, “Hidden Books: The Art of Kumi Korf,” is a 30-minute documentary about the Japanese-born artist, Kumi Korf whose art involves several disciplines: architectural design, printmaking, painting, papermaking and artists’ books. The film a unique perspective on her life and how the world around her influences her work.

Pilchuck: A Dance with Fire – moderated by Paul Fisher
The film explores how the Pilchuck Glass School, a small art center in the Pacific Northwest woods of Stanwood, Washington, became the largest glass art center in the world. Founded by iconic figure Dale Chihuly and a few art school friends in the counterculture days of the early 70s, the Pilchuck Glass School pushed the boundaries from its very beginnings. James Baker, CEO of the Pilchuck Glass School and the Executive Producer of this PBS documentary special.

On the Road: Winston Art Group Appraisal Day – hosted by Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in the Theatre Lab, Parliament Hall, 777 Glades Road. Renowned experts from Winston Art Group of West Palm Beach; Kodner Galleries of Dania Beach; Palm Beach Modern Auctions of West Palm Beach, and others will be on hand to offer verbal appraisals of art, antiques, decorative arts, furniture, jewelry and vintage.
